  • In this paper, a numerical method for analyzing coupling between high-altitude electromagnetic pulse (HEMP) as external field and a shielded twisted pair (STP) cable is proposed, which is based on an expanded chain matrix. Load responses of electromagnetic (EM) field excitation in uniform transmission line (TL) are solved by Baum-Liu-Tesche (BLT) equations in frequency domain, however, it is difficult to apply BLT equations to solve load responses of STP cable because the iteratively changing configuration of each twisted pairs are involved in cable. To avoid this problem and decrease memory and CPU time, we proposed the expanded chain matrix modeling method that is calculated using ABCD parameters, and applied multi-conductor transmission line (MTL) theory to consider the EMP coupling effectiveness of each twisted pairs. The results implemented by the proposed method are presented and compared with those obtained by the finite-difference time domain (FDTD) method as a kind of 3D full wave analysis.

  • The radar method is becoming one of the major nondestructive testing (NDT) techniques for concrete structures. Numerical modeling of electromagnetic wave is needed to analyze radar measurement results and to study the influence of measurement parameters on the radar measurements. Finite difference-time domain (FD-TD) method is used to simulate electromagnetic wave propagation through concrete specimens. Three concrete specimens with a 25 mm delamination embedded at 25 mm, 50 mm, and 75mm depth are modeled in 3-dimension. Also, thickness change of delamination and permittivity change are modeled.

  • In this paper, the planar LTS and Vibaldi antenna operating at 28 GHz for LMDS is optimized by finite difference time domain(FDTD) method and then fabricated and measured. We designed LTS and Vivaldi antenna with corrugation structure for reducing sidelobe, then these antenna are optimized by FDTD, and then fabricated and measured. In a results of the measured values, sidelobe level of LTS and Vivaldi antenna with corrugation structure is 4 dB lower than that of LTS and Vivaldi antenna.

  • The FDTD(Finite-Difference Time-Domain) method is applied to analyze an unequal Wilkinson power divider. Unequal Wilkinson power divider has complex structures and the standard Yee Cell modeling method is not appropriate. In this paper, nonuniform gridding and subcell modeling are used to accurately analyze the characteristics of an unequal Wilkinson power divider. For comparison, the numerical results are presented with those from a commercial circuit simulator.

  • In this paper, the single patch microstrip antenna and gap coupled broadband microstrip patch antenna using FDTD(Finite Difference Time Domain method) are analyzed. Mur's 2nd absorbing boundary condition to minimize reflected wave is applied. Return loss, voltage standing wave ratio, and input impedance by the length and width of driving patch, the length and width of parasitic patch, and the distance between driving patch and parasitic patch have been analyzed. Design parameters and radiation patterns of broadband antenna have been also shown.

  • The analysis of photonic band gaps and anomalous dispersion phenomena in photonic crystals requires understanding of band structures and dispersion surfaces. We show the results of the calculation of band structures and dispersion surfaces for a few two- dimensional lattices, using the finite-difference time-domain method with periodic boundary conditions. In addition, localized defect modes the exist within the band gap are computed by the same method.

  • The study on computation time, accuracy, and convergency characteristic of the implicit finite difference method is presented with the variation of the space increment and time step in a two-dimensional transient heat conduction problem with a dirichlet boundary condition. Numerical analysis were conducted by the model having the conditions of the solution domain from 0 to 3m, thermal diffusivity of 1.26 $m^2/h$, initial condition of 272 K, and boundary condition of 255.4 K. The results obtained are summarized as follows : 1) The degree of influence with respect to the accuracy of the time step and space increment in the alternating-direction implicit method and Crank-Nicholson implicit method were relatively small, but in case of the fully implicit method showed opposite tendency. 2) To prescribe near the zero for the space increment and tine step in a two dimensional transient problem were good in a accuracy aspect but unreasonable in a computational time aspect. 3) The reasonable condition of the space increment and the time step considering accuracy and computation time could be generalized with the Fourier modulus increment, F, ana dimensionless space increment, X, irrespective of the solution domain.

  • This paper presents the new Compact 2D ADI-FDTD(Alternating-Direction Implicit Finite-Difference Time-Domain) method, where the time step is no longer restricted by the numerical stability condition. This method is an accelerating algorithm for the conventional Compact 2D FDTD method. To validate this algorithm, we have analyzed the dispersion characteristics of the hollow rectangular waveguide and the shielded microstrip line. The results of the proposed method are very well agreed with those of both the conventional analytic method and the Compact 2D FDTD method. The CPU time for analysis of this method is very much reduced compared with the conventional Compact 2D FDTD method. The proposed method is valuable as a fast algorithm in the research of dispersion characteristics of the waveguide structures.

  • In this paper, discontinuity parts in microstrip line with $\lambda$/4 open stub and one in crank type have been anlayzed by using FDTD(Finite-Difference Time-Domain) analysis method. The noise components, in this case, are occred at the discontinuites of the given microstrip lines, the complex poles were extracted by the analysis using GPOF (Generalized Pencil-of Function) method from electric field of time domain. It has, then, been found that the noise level and the noise frequency components included in signal could be derived.
