The problem of the transient interaction of a plane acoustic shock wave which has an infinitely steep wave front with a cylindrical or spherical elastic shell has been studied analytically from early fifties based on the integral transform and series solution techniques. Huang adopted an inverse Laplace transform, and used a finite number of terms of the infinite series expansion of the equations for the shells. In the 1990s, the results have been used by many authors for validation of computer codes. The object of this paper is to discuss the interaction between a moving source and submerged spherical shells. Since the center of source is moving the first contact location between the waves and shell changes depending on the source velocity and distance. These are considered in the analysis. Furthermore, constant source strength and decreasing strength are considered in the analysis. Radial velocities at several locations on the structure are obtained and the results are discussed.

For precise stress analysis of pressure vessel nozzle junction area, it should be modelized as a cylindrical shell with a cylindrical outlet attached on it, but because of its geometrical complexity, exact analysis and solution is very difficult to obtain. So, when the nozzle diameter is small compared to that of vessel, it is general to simplify the model as a flat plate with a cylinder. As the current nozzle shape is manufactured as "Through Type" to reduce the stress concentration around the nozzle junction part of pressure vessel, a theoretical analysis on the cylinder with finite length should be performed to accomodate this fact. In this paper, the general solutions which were obtained by applying Fulgge's theory to the finite length cylinder, membrane and bending theory to the flat plate were superposed to analyze the model. Each theoretical optimal values were obtained through the analysis of stress concentration caused by the variation of cylinder length and thickness, and these results were estimated by performing model experimentation.mentation.
This study investigated the yielding capacity and performance of seismic dampers constructed with steel ring plates using numerical and analytical approaches. This study aims to provide an analytical relationship for estimating the yielding capacity and initial stiffness of steel ring dampers. Using plastic analysis and considering the mechanism of plastic hinge formation, a relation has been obtained for estimating the yielding capacity of steel ring dampers. Extensive parametric studies have been carried out using a nonlinear finite element method to examine the accuracy of the obtained analytical relationships. The parametric studies include investigating the influence of the length, thickness, and diameter of the ring of steel ring dampers. To this end, comprehensive verification studies are performed by comparing the numerical predictions with several reported experimental results to demonstrate the numerical method's reliability and accuracy. Comparison is made between the hysteresis curves, and failure modes predicted numerically or obtained/observed experimentally. Good agreement is observed between the numerical simulations and the analytical predictions for the yielding force and initial stiffness. The difference between the numerical models' ultimate tensile and compressive capacities was observed that average of about 22%, which stems from the performance of the ring-dampers in the tensile and compression zones. The results show that the steel ring-dampers are exhibited high energy dissipation capacity and ductility. The ductility parameters for steel ring-damper between values were 7.5 to 4.1.

An experimental study was performed for two types of co-axial cylindrical shell structures in order to establish the relationship between in-air dynamic characteristics and in-water ones and to observe hydrodynamic mass effects on their mode shapes when submerged. The outer cylinders are prepared with two kinds to get more insights on the fluid-structure interaction phenomena: one is flexible, which means that the outer cylinder has almost same stiffness as the inner one, and the other is a rigid one whose stiffness is more than ten times of the inner one's(it might be regarded as the scaled-down model of the reactor internals). The finite element. analyses were also implemented to support the experimental results. The results show that the natural frequencies of a co-axial cylindrical shell structure in water are remarkably lower than those in air due to the fluid mass effects. In case of the flexible-to-flexible cylinders, there exist in-phase and out-of-phase mode shapes and they are affected by the annular gap between the. co-axial cylinders. For the in-phase mode the in-water natural frequency decreases exponentially as the gap increases, while it slightly increases in case of the out-of-phase mode due to the squeezing effect of the gap fluid. In the flexible-to-rigid case, the normalized natural frequency(in-water frequency/in-air one) of the inner cylinder(core barrel model) ranges between in-phase and out-of-phase mode frequencies of the flexible-to-flexible co-axial cylindrical structure having identical dimensions. Also the normalized natural frequency of the inner cylinder of the flexible-to-rigid one moves from near of the in-phase mode frequency into the out-of-phase mode value of the flexible-to-flexible case as circumferential mode number(n) increases.
Nonlinear behavior and large deformation cannot be analyzed using techniques based on linear theory. Nonetheless, they are emerging as gradually huge and complex structures. In addition, the optimum design of structure is necessary in the development of high-performance computation and numerical methods. as well as stricter design-criterion. Therefore, the structural problems in engineering that are limited to the linear region must be extended to the nonlinear region. Likewise, structural behavior must be accurately analyzed. In turn, this requires considering the expected problems beforehand. Only then can an efficient, economical, and optimized structure be designed. This paper presents the solution of the geometrical nonlinear problem of anisotropic cylindrical shell. The characteristics of the geometrical nonlinear behavior of anisotropic circular cylindrical shells may vary according to several causes. e.g., change of fibers, curvature in the circumferential direction, subtended angle, aspect, etc. Parametric studies were conducted to determine the effect of factors on the large deflection behavior of laminated shells, with interesting observations.

In this paper elastic-plastic large deflection analysis of ship structural members, plates, stiffened plates and cylindrical shallow shell, are performed by the finite element method. And for the consideration of the yielded propagation through the depth of the member, the layered element approach is employed. The present method is justified by comparing its results with those of experiment and others. As results, the nonlinear behavior and the ultimate strength curves are shown, which can be used in the design of the plates and the stiffened plates under compression, and the applicability to the shell structures is suggested. The analysis results are as followings. (1) The results of the approximate equations as well as those of buckling analysis may not guarantee precisely the safety of the structures in some cases and the optimum in other cases. Therefore they may not show the design criteria for the optimal design. (2) As the initial deflection increases, its effects on the ultimate strength of the structure generally increases, and the ultimate load, therefore, decreases. (3) This approach can be applied to the shell type structures. (4) The present method can be applied to the various structures composed of plate and beam members, for example, plates with hole and the stiffened plates with hole stiffened by spigot, doubler and/or stiffener, for the optimal design.
This study aimed to analyze the nonlinear buckling of ring-stiffened circular cylinders under uniform external pressure, e.g. hydrostatic pressure, considering material nonlinearity and initial imperfection. In the present study, we analyzed the collapse pressure of pressure vessels using ANSYS Workbench, which is a framework of finite element methods. First, linear buckling analysis is performed to find collapse modes of the model. Second, scaling the first mode shape with small factor, geometric model is pre-deformed. And then, by analyzing the nonlinear buckling of the pre-deformed shape, the collapse pressure is estimated. To verify the validity of the analyses, we compared the results with Ross' experimental results. Finally, we applied it to ring-stiffened circular cylindrical shell of the pressure hull of a small submarine.
In this paper, the numerical finite element formulations were derived for the linearized Navier-Stokes' equations with assumptions of two-dimensional incompressible, homogeneous viscous fluid field, and small oscillation and the FAMD (Fluid Added Mass and Damping) code was developed for practical applications calculating the fluid added mass and damping. In formulations, a fluid domain is discretized with C$\^$0/-type quadratic quadrilateral elements containing eight nodes using a mixed interpolation method, i.e., the interpolation function for the velocity variable is approximated by a quadratic function based on all eight nodal points and the interpolation function for the pressure variable is approximated by a linear function based on the four nodal points at vertices. Using the developed code, the various characteristics of the fluid added mass and damping are investigated for the concentric cylindrical shell and the actual hexagon arrays of the liquid metal reactor cores.
Finite element buckling analysis of insulated transition flue ducts is carried out to determine the critical buckling load multipliers when subjected to axial compression for design process. Through this investigation, the results of numerical computations to examine the buckling strength for different possible duct shapes (cylinder, and circular-to-square) are presented. The load multipliers are determined through detailed buckling analysis taking into account the effects of geometrical construction and duct plate thickness which have great influence on the buckling load. Enhancement in the buckling capacity of such ducts by the addition of horizontal and vertical stiffeners is also investigated. Several models with varying dimensions and plate thicknesses are examined to obtain the linear buckling capacities against duct dimensions. The percentage improvement in the buckling capacity due to the addition of vertical stiffeners and horizontal Stiffeners is shown to be as high as three times for some cases. The study suggests that the best location of the horizontal stiffener is at 0.25 of duct depth from the bottom to achieve the maximum buckling capacity. A design equation estimating the buckling strength of geometrically perfect cylindrical-to-square shell is developed by using regression analysis accurately with approximately 4% errors.

In recent years, the finite element method has become one of the most popular numerical technique for obtaining solutions of engineering science problems. However, there exist various uncertainties in modeling the problems, such as the dimensions(geometry shape), the material properties, boundary conditions, etc. The consideration for the uncertainties inherent in the problems can be made by understanding the influences of uncertain parameters[1]. Determining the influences of uncertainties as statistical quantities using the standard finite element method requires enormous computing time, while the probabilistic finite element method is realized as an efficient scheme[2,3] yielding statistical solution with just a few direct computations. In this paper, a formulation of the probabilistic fluid-structure interaction problem accounting for the first order perturbation of geometric shape is derived, and especially probabilistical acoustic pressure scattering from the structure with surrounding fluid is focused on. In Section 2, governing equations for the fluid-structure problems are given. In Section 3, a finite element formulation, based on the functional, is presented. First order perturbation of geometric shape with randomness is incorporated into the finite element formulation in conjunction with discretization of the random fields in Section 4 and 5. Finally, the proposed formulation is applied to a acoustic pressure scattering problem from an infinitely long cylindrical shell structure with randomness of radial perturbation.
