The building frame and its foundation along with the soil on which it rests, together constitute a complete structural system. In the conventional analysis, a structure is analysed as an independent frame assuming unyielding supports and the interactive response of soil-foundation is disregarded. This kind of analysis does not provide realistic behaviour and sometimes may cause failure of the structure. Also, the conventional analysis considers infill wall as non-structural elements and ignores its interaction with the bounding frame. In fact, the infill wall provides lateral stiffness and thus plays vital role in resisting the seismic forces. Thus, it is essential to consider its effect especially in case of high rise buildings. In the present research work the building frame, infill wall, isolated column footings (open foundation) and soil mass are considered to act as a single integral compatible structural unit to predict the nonlinear interaction behaviour of the composite system under seismic forces. The coupled isoparametric finite-infinite elements have been used for modelling of the interaction system. The material of the frame, infill and column footings has been assumed to follow perfectly linear elastic relationship whereas the well known hyperbolic soil model is used to account for the nonlinearity of the soil mass.

This paper presents a method of seismic analysis for a cylindrical liquid storage structure on/in horizontally layered half.space considering the effects of the interior fluid and exterior soil medium in the frequency domain. To capture the essence of fluid-structure-soil interaction effects effectively, a mixed finite element with two-field (u, p) approximation is employed to model the compressive inviscid fluid, while the structure and soil medium are presented by the 3-D axisymmetric finite elements and dynamic infinite elements. The present FE-based method can be applied to the system with complex geometry of fluid region as well as with inhomogeneous near-field soil medium, since it can directly model both the fluid and the soil. For the purpose of verification, dominant peak frequencies in transfer functions for horizontal motions of cylindrical fluid storage tanks with rigid massless foundation on a homogeneous viscoelastic half.space are compared with those by two different added mass approaches for the fluid motion. The comparison indicates that the Present FE-based methodology gives accurate solution for the fluid-structure-soil interaction problem. Finally, as a demonstration of versatility of the present study, a seismic analysis for a real-scale LNG storage tank embedded in layered half.space is carried out, and its member forces along the height of the structure are compared with those by an added mass approach developed by the present writers.
To solve alternating magnetic field problems, the program TDEDDY is developed with the use of the finite element method. Triangular finite elements of the first order are employed for the discretization of the field region. This program is constructed through an interactive system to check errors immediately when every routine is executed, and several subprograms are employed for the graphic representation of computed results. As an example, it is applied to a model of semi-infinite slab excited by an alternating current source. Results by the program TDEDDY show the satisfactory accuracy in comparision with those of analytic calculations.
In this paper, finite impulse response (FIR) smoothers are proposed for discrete-time systems. The proposed FIR smoother is designed under the constraints of linearity, unbiasedness, FIR structure, and independence of the initial state information. It is also obtained by directly minimizing the performance criterion with unbiased constraints. The approach to the MVF smoother proposed in this paper is logical and systematic, while existing results have heuristic assumption, such as infinite covariance of the initial state. Additionally, the proposed MVF smoother is based on the general system model that may have the singular system matrix and has both system and measurement noises. Thorough simulation studies, it is shown that the proposed MVF smoother is more robust against modeling uncertainties numerical errors than fixed-lag Kalman smoother which is infinite impulse response (IIR) type estimator.
A proper physical modeling of infilled building frame-foundation beam-soil mass interaction system is needed to predict more realistic and accurate structural behavior under static vertical loading. This is achieved via finite element method considering the superstructure, foundation and soil mass as a single integral compatible structural unit. The physical modelling is achieved via use of finite element method, which requires the use of variety of isoparametric elements with different degrees of freedom. The unbounded domain of the soil mass has been discretized with coupled finite-infinite elements to achieve computational economy. The nonlinearity of soil mass plays an important role in the redistribution of forces in the superstructure. The nonlinear behaviour of the soil mass is modeled using hyperbolic model. The incremental-iterative nonlinear solution algorithm has been adopted for carrying out the nonlinear elastic interaction analysis of a two-bay two-storey infilled building frame. The frame and the infill have been considered to behave in linear elastic manner, whereas the subsoil in nonlinear elastic manner. In this paper, the computational methodology adopted for nonlinear soil-structure interaction analysis of infilled frame-foundation-soil system has been presented.
This paper studies the asymptotic behavior of the finite-time ruin probability in a jump-diffusion risk model with constant force of interest, upper tail asymptotically independent claims and a general counting arrival process. Particularly, if the claim inter-arrival times follow a certain dependence structure, the obtained result also covers the case of the infinite-time ruin probability.

In this paper, a finite element technique is applied to the prediction of the wave resonance phenomena in harbors. The mild-slope equation is used with a partial reflection boundary condition introduced to model the energy dissipating effects on the solid boundary. For an efficient modeling of the radiation condition at infinity, a new infinite element is developed. The shape function of the infinite element is derived from the asymptotic behavior of the first kind of the Hankel's function in the analytical boundary series solutions. For the computational efficiency, the system matrices of the element are constructed by performing the relevant integrations in the infinite direction analytically. Comparisons with the results from experiments and other solution methods show that the present model gives fairly good results. Numerical experiments are also carried out to determine the proper distance to the infinite elements from the mouth of the halter, which directly affect the accuracy and efficiency of the solution.
In this paper, a new multirate optimal finite impulse response (FIR) filter is proposed for the signal reconstruction in the nosy filter bank systems. The multirate optimal FIR filter replaces the conventional synthesis filters and the Kalman synthesis filter. First, the generic linear model is derived from the multirate state space model for an autoregressive (AR)input signal. Second, the multirate optimal FIR filter is derived from the multirate generic linear model using the minimum variance criterion. This paper also provides numerical examples and results. The simulation results illustrate that the performance is improved compared with conventional synthesis filters and the proposed filter has advantages over the Kalman synthesis filter.
Since Berkhoff proposed the mild-slope equation in 1972, it has widely been used for calculation of shallow water wave transformation. Recently, it was extended to give an extended mild-slope equation, which includes the bottom slope squared term and bottom curvature term so as to be capable of modeling wave transformation on rapidly varying topography. These equations were derived by integrating the Laplace equation vertically. In the present study, we develop a finite element model to solve the Laplace equation directly while keeping the same computational efficiency as the mild-slope equation. This model assumes the vertical variation of wave potential as a cosine hyperbolic function as done in the derivation of the mild-slope equation, and the Galerkin method is used to discretize . The computational domain was discretized with proper finite elements, while the radiation condition at infinity was treated by introducing the concept of an infinite element. The upper boundary condition can be either free surface or a solid structure. The applicability of the developed model was verified through example analyses of two-dimensional wave reflection and transmission. .

Based on the finite element method of traditional straight Euler-Bernoulli beams and the coupled relations between linear displacement and angular displacement of a pre-twisted Euler-Bernoulli beam, the shape functions and stiffness matrix are deduced. Firstly, the stiffness of pre-twisted Euler-Bernoulli beam is developed based on the traditional straight Euler-Bernoulli beam. Then, a new finite element model is proposed based on the displacement general solution of a pre-twisted Euler-Bernoulli beam. Finally, comparison analyses are made among the proposed Euler-Bernoulli model, the new numerical model based on displacement general solution and the ANSYS solution by Beam188 element based on infinite approach. The results show that developed numerical models are available for the pre-twisted Euler-Bernoulli beam, and which provide more accurate finite element model for the numerical analysis. The effects of pre-twisted angle and flexural stiffness ratio on the mechanical property are investigated.
