A well-known pressure correction method, a SIMPLE algorithm is extended to treat compressible flows. Collocated grids are used and density is linked to pressure via an equation of state. The influence of pressure on density in the case of compressible flows is implicitly incorporated into the extended SIMPLE algorithm. The first-order Upwind and high-order Quick scheme are compared with respect to an accuracy and convergence time at all speeds. The extended method is verified on a number of test cases and the results we compared with other numerical results available in the literature. The calculated results show that the Quick scheme improves accuracy at all speed and also reduces the calculation time at supersonic flows, compared with the Upwind scheme.
In this study, a two-dimensional shallow-water equation was used to develop the mathematical model for computing water levels and flow distribution. In the discretization equations, based on the finite volume method (FVM), the third order Runge-Kutta method and the third order upwind scheme were introduced to handle the unsteady and vconvective terms in the governing equations. To determine the accuracy of the developed model, it was applied to the rectangular horizontal channel in a frictionless flow. The water depth and velocity obtained by the numerical model were found to agree closely with the exact solution. The model was also applied to the rectangular channel with both the symmetric and the non symmetric constriction. The velocity distribution of the flow and the propagation of the flood wave were simulated and the results well described the flow characteristics.
Direct simulations of aerodynamic sound, especially sound emitted by rapidly rotating elliptic cylinder by the finite difference lattice Boltzmann method (FDLBM). Effect of pile-fabrics for noise reduction is also studied by the finite volume LBM (FVLBM) using an unstructured grid. Second order time integration and third order upwind scheme are shown to be enough for these simulations. Sound sources are detected to be doublets for both cases. For the elliptic cylinder, the doublet is generated in the interaction between the vortex and the edge. For the circular cylinders, they are generated synchronizing with the Karman vortex street, and it is also shown that the pile-fabrics covering the surface of the cylinder reduces the strength of the source.
Ice accretion on the solid surface is an importance factor in assessing the performance of aircraft and wind turbine blade. Changes in the external shape due to ice accretion can greatly deteriorate the aerodynamic performance. In this study, a three-dimensional upwind-type second-order positivity-preserving finite volume CFD scheme based on the unstructured mesh topology is developed to simulate two-phase flow in atmospheric icing condition. The code is then validated by comparing with NASA IRT experimental data on the sphere. The present results of the collection efficiency are found to be in close agreement with experimental data and show improvement near the stagnation region.
An unstructured finite volume method is presented for seeking steady and unsteady flow solutions of the two-dimensional incompressible viscous flows. In the present method, SMAC-type algorithm is implemented on unstructured triangular meshes, using second order upwind scheme for the convective fluxes. Validation tests are made for various steady and unsteady incompressible flows. Convergence characteristics are examined and accuracy comparisons are made with some benchmark solutions.

Boundary condition is one of the major factors to influence the numerical stability and solution accuracy in numerical analysis. One of the most important physical boundary conditions in the flowfield analysis is the wall boundary condition imposed on the body surface. To solve a two-dimensional Euler equation, totally four numerical wall boundary conditions should be prescribed. Two of them are supplied by the flow tangency condition. The other two conditions, therefore, should be prepared additionally in a suitable way. In this paper, four different sets of wall boundary conditions are proposed and then applied to solve high-speed flowfields around a quarter circle geometry. A two-dimensional compressible Euler solver is prepared based on the finite volume method. This solver hires three different upwind schemes; Steger-Warmings flux vector splitting, Roes flux difference splitting, and Lious advection upstream splitting method. It is found that the way to specify the additional numerical wall boundary conditions strongly affects the overall stability and accuracy of the upwind schemes in high-speed flow calculation. The optimal wall boundary conditions should be also chosen very carefully depending on the numerical schemes used to solve the problem.

Numerical simulation of fluid flow with moving free surface has been carried out. For the free surface flow, a VOF(Volume of Fluid)-based algorithm utilizing a fixed grid system has been investigated. In order to reduce numerical smearing at the free surface represented on a fixed grid system, a new free surface tracking algorithm based on the donor-acceptor scheme has been presented. Novel features of the proposed algorithm are characterized as two numerical tools; the orientation vector to represent the free surface orientation in each cell and the baby-cell to determine the fluid volume flux at each cell boundary. The proposed algorithm can be easily implemented in any irregular non-uniform grid systems that are usual in finite element method (FEM). Moreover, the proposed algorithm can be extended and applied to the 3-D free surface flow problem without additional efforts. For computation of unsteady incompressible flow, a finite element approximation based on the explicit fractional step method has been adopted. In addition, the SUPG(streamline upwind/Petrov-Galerkin) method has been implemented to deal with convection dominated flows. Combination of the proposed free surface tracking scheme and explicit fractional step formulation resulted in an efficient solution algorithm. Validity of the present solution algorithm was demonstrated from its application to the broken dam and the solitary wave propagation problems.
The Pressure-based Unstructured-grid Navier-Stokes Solver PUNS-2/3D for incompressible steady and unsteady viscous flows has been developed. It is based on nonstaggered cell-centered finite volume method. Second-order upwind scheme with least-square reconstruction is used for convective fluxes. The SIMPLE method is implemented to couple the pressure and velocity fields. And the time derivatives in the momentum equations are discretised using a second-order Euler backward-differencing scheme. The discretised linear equations are solved by the preconditioned Biconjugate Gradient Stabilized method(Bi-CGSTAB). The developed solver is applied to validation problems using hybrid meshes.
In this study, the shock wave focusing of an elliptic reflector is numerically simulated by solving the Euler equations. The numerical method is the second order upwind TVD scheme with a finite volume discretization. For the verification of the present method, we simulate the moving shock wave passing through a two-dimensional corner. The computed isopycnics are compared with the earlier experiment. Numerical results of the elliptic reflectors show that the density and pressure at the focusing point increase linearly as the aspect ratio of the reflector becomes deep. On the other hand, the gas dynamic focal length decreased with the increase of the reflector aspect ratio.

A numerical scheme for solid propellant rocket has been studied using preconditioning method to research unsteady combustion processes for the double-base propellant with a converging-diverging nozzle. The Navier-Stokes equation is solved by dualtime stepping method with finite volume method. The turbulence model uses a shear stress transport modeling. The species equation follows up the method of Xinping WI, Mridul Kumar and Kenneth K. Kuo. A preconditioned algorithm is applied to solve incompressible regime inside the combustor and compressible flow at nozzle. Mass flux was evaluated using modified advective upwind splitting method. The simulated result the comparison a fully coupled implicit method and a semi implicit method in terms of accuracy and efficiency. This report shows the result of solid rocket propellant combustion.
