A Navier-Stokes code has been developed to simulate the flow through a cross flow fan. It is based on an unstructured finite volume method and uses moving grid technique to model the rotation of the fan. A low Reynolds number turbulence model is used to calculate eddy viscosity. The basic algorithm is SIMPLE. Numerical simulations over a wide range of flow rate are carried out to validate the code. Comparison of all numerical solutions with experimental data confirms the validity of the present code. Present numerical solutions show a noticeable improvement over a previous numerical method which is based on a model of body force to simulate the rotation of the impeller.

Transient radiative heat transfer is analyzed in a one-dimensional slab using finite volume method (FVM). In this study, the step, $2^{nd}$ order upwind, and QUICK schemes are used for incident diffuse radiation and collimated beam, respectively. The results fer diffuse radiation show that all schemes applied in this study give good agreements with available published results. In case of collimated beam however, the results show deviations from the analytical solutions. To successfully describe the propagations of collimated beam shock capturing schemes such as TVD scheme are need to be developed.
The Finite Element Solutions Is reported on solid-liquid phase change in porous media with natural convection including freezing. The model is based on volume averaged transport equations, while phase change is assumed to occur over a small temperature range. The FEM (Finite Element Method) algorithm used in this study is 3-step time-splitting method which requires much less execution time and computer storage the velocity-pressure integrated method and the penalty method. And the explicit Lax-Wendroff scheme is applied to nonlinear convective term in the energy equation. For natural convection including melting and solidification the numerical results show reasonable agreement with FDM (Finite Difference Method) results.
A new moving-mesh Finite Volume Method (FVM) for the efficient solution of the two-dimensional neutron diffusion equation is introduced. Many other moving-mesh methods developed to solve the neutron diffusion problems use a relatively large number of sophisticated mathematical equations, and so suffer from a significant complexity of mathematical calculations. In this study, the proposed method is formulated based on simple mathematical algebraic equations that enable an efficient mesh movement and CV deformation for using in practical nuclear reactor applications. Accordingly, a computational framework relying on a new moving-mesh FVM is introduced to efficiently distribute the meshes and deform the CVs in regions with high gradient variations of reactor power. These regions of interest are very important in the neutronic assessment of the nuclear reactors and accordingly, a higher accuracy of the power densities is required to be obtained. The accuracy, execution time and finally visual comparison of the proposed method comprehensively investigated and discussed for three different benchmark problems. The results all indicated a higher accuracy of the proposed method in comparison with the conventional fixed-mesh FVM.

The accurate permeability for preform is critical to model and design the impregnation of fluid resin in the composite manufacturing process. In this study, the in-plane and transverse permeability for a woven fabric are predicted numerically through the coupled flow model which combines microscopic with macroscopic flow. The microscopic and macroscopic flow which are flows within the micro-unit and macro-unit cell, respectively, are calculated by using 3-D CVFEM(control volume finite element method). To avoid checker-board pressure field and improve the efficiency on numerical computation, A new interpolation function for velocity is proposed on the basis of analytic solutions. The permeability of plain woven fabric is measured through unidirectional flow experiment and compared with the permeability calculated numerically. Based on the good agreement of the results, the relationships between the permeability and the structures of preform such as the fiber volume fraction and stacking effect can be understood. The reverse and the simple stacking are taken in account. Unlike past literatures, this study is based on more realistic unit cell and the improved prediction of permeability can be achieved. It is observed that in-plane flow is more dominant than transverse flow in the real flow through preform and the stacking effect of multi-layered preform is negligible. Consequently, the proposed coupled flow model can be applied to modeling of real composite materials processing.
A finite element based microstructural modeling for the size dependent strengthening of particle reinforced aluminum composites is presented. The model accounts explicitly for the enhanced strength in a discretely defined "punched zone" around the particle in an aluminum matrix composite as a result of geometrically necessary dislocations developed through a CTE mismatch. The density of geometrically necessary dislocations is calculated considering volume fraction of the particle. Results show that predicted flow stresses with different particle size are in good agreement with experiments. It is also shown that 0.2% offset yield stresses increases with smaller particles and larger volume fractions and this length-scale effect on the enhanced strength can be observed by explicitly including GND region around the particle. The strengths predicted with the inclusion of volume fraction in the density equation are slightly lower than those without.
In this paper, free vibration and static response of magneto-electro-elastic (MEE) beams has been investigated. To this end, a 3D finite element formulation has been derived by minimization the total potential energy and linear constitutive equation. The coupling between elastic, electric and magnetic fields can have a significant influence on the stiffness and in turn on the static behaviour of MEE beam. Further, different Barium Titanate ($BaTiO_3$) and Cobalt Ferric oxide ($CoFe_2O_4$) volume fractions results in indifferent coupled response. Therefore, through the numerical examples the influence of volume fractions and boundary conditions on the natural frequencies of MEE beam is illustrated. The study is extended to evaluate the static response of MEE beam under various forms of mechanical loading. It is seen from the numerical evaluation that the volume fractions, loading and boundary conditions have a significant effect on the structural behaviour of MEE structures. The observations made here may serve as benchmark solutions in the optimum design of MEE structures.

The flood impact pressure acting on a vertical wall resulting from a dam-breaking problem is simulated using a navier-Stokes(N-S) solver. The N-S solver uses Eulerian Finite Volume Method(FVM) along with Volume Of Fluid(VOF) method for 2-D incompressible free surface flows. A Split Lagrangian Advection(SLA) scheme for VOF method is implemented in this paper. The SLA scheme is developed based on an algorithm of Piecewise Linear Interface Calculation(PLIC). The coupling between the continuity and momentum equations is affected by using a well-known Semi-Implicit Method for Pressure-Linked Equations (SIMPLE) algorithm. Several two-dimensional numerical simulations of the dam-breaking problem are presented to validate the accuracy and demonstrate the capability of the present algorithm. The significance of the time step and grid resolution are also discussed. The computational results are compared with experimental data and with computations by other numerical methods. The results showed a favorable agreement of water impact pressure as well as the global fluid motion.

In this paper, we have proposed a new method to determine the initial billet for the forged products using a function approximation in neural networks. the architecture of neural network is a three-layer neural network and the back propagation algorithm is employed to train the network. By utilizing the ability of function approximation of neural network, an optimal billet is determined by applying nonlinear mathematical relationship between shape ratio in the initial billet and the final products. A volume of incomplete filling in the die is measured by the rigid-plastic finite element method. The neural network is trained with the initial billet shape ratio and that of the un-filled volume. After learning, the system is able to predict the filling region which are exactly the same or slightly different to results of finite element method. It is found that the prediction of the filling shape ratio region can be made successfully and the finite element method results are represented better by the neural network.

An attempt is made to develop a kind of hybrid numerical method for computations of the thermal stresses during a solidification process. In this algorithm, the phase-change heat transfer analysis is perrformed by a finite volume method(FVM) and the thermal stress analysis in a solidifying body by a finite element method(FEM). The temperatures at the grid points calculated in the heat transfer analysis are transferred to those of gauss points in elements by a bi-cubic surface patch technique for the thermal stress analysis. A hyperbolic-sine constitutive law is used to prescribe the inelastic strain rate of material. Results for the unidirectional solidification process of a pure aluminum are compared with those of others and shows good agreement.
