  • A novel impact localization method is presented based on impact induced elastic waves in sensorized composite structure subjected to temperature fluctuations. In real practices, environmental and operational conditions influence the acquired signals and consequently make the feature (particularly Time of Arrival (TOA)) extraction process, complicated and troublesome. To overcome this complication, a robust TOA estimation method is proposed based on the times in which the absolute amplitude of the signal reaches to a specific amplitude value. The presented method requires prior knowledge about the normalized wave velocity in different directions of propagation. To this aim, a finite element model of the plate was built in ABAQUS/CAE. The impact location is then highlighted by calculating an error value at different points of the structure. The efficiency of the developed impact localization technique is experimentally evaluated by dropping steel balls with different energies on a carbon fiber composite plate with different temperatures. It is demonstrated that the developed technique is able to localize impacts with different energies even in the presence of noise and temperature fluctuations.

  • The growth of cities requires the construction of new tunnels close to the existing ones. Prediction and control of ground movement around the tunnel are important especially in urban area. The ground respond due to EPB (Earth Pressure Balance) pressure are investigated using the finite element method by ABAQUS in intersection of the triplet tunnels (Line 2, 3 and 4) of Mashhad Urban Railway in Iran. Special attention is paid to the effect of EPB pressure on the tunnel face displacement. The results of the analysis show that in EPB tunneling, surface settlement and face displacement is related to EPB pressure. Moreover, it is found that tunnel construction sequence is a great effect in face displacement value. For this study, this value in Line 4 where is excavated after line 3, is smaller than that line. In addition, the trend of the displacement curves are changed with the depth for all lines where is located in above and below, close to and above the centerline tunnel face for Line 2, 3 and 4, respectively. It is concluded that: (i) the surface settlement decreases with increasing EPB pressure on the tunnel face; (ii) at a constant EPB pressure, the tunnel face displacement values increase with depth. In addition, this is depended on the tunneling sequence; (iii) the trend of the displacement curves change with the depth.

  • In this article, the megasonic cleaning system for cleaning micro/nano particles from flat panel display (FPD) surfaces was developed. A piezoelectric actuator and a waveguide were designed by finite element method (FEM) analysis. The calculated peak frequency value of the quartz waveguide was 1002 kHz, which agreed well with the measured value of 1003 kHz. The average acoustic pressure of the megasonic cleaning system was 43.1 kPa, which is three times greater than that of the conventional type of 13.9 kPa. Particle removal efficiency (PRE) tests were performed, and the cleaning efficiency of the developed system was proven to be 99%. The power consumption of the developed system was 64% lower than that of the commercial system. These results show that the developed megasonic cleaning system can be an effective solution in particle removing from FPD substrate with higher energy efficiency and lower chemical and ultra pure water (UPW) consumption.

  • The use of aluminum alloy parts in the automotive industry has been increasing recently due to its low weight compared with steel to improve fuel efficiency. Companies in the auto parts' manufacturing sector are expected to meet the government's strict environmental regulations. In this study, manufacturing process of aluminum alloy bolt has been designed from forming to heat treatment. Bolt forming process is composed of cold forging for body and rolling for thread. In this study only cold forging process is considered by employing the finite element method. In the cold forging process, preform shape was designed and damage value was considered for die design. Two steps of forging process has been developed by the simulation and a prototype was manugactured accordingly. As a final process, solution heat treatment and aging process was employed. A final prototype was found to meet the required specifications of tensile strength and dimension.

  • Displacement fields and interface stresses are obtained by modifying the potential energy functional with a penalty function which enforces the continuity of stresses at the interface of two-materials. Based on the displacement field and the interface stresses, a new methodology to generate a continuous stress field over the entire domain including the interface of the dissimilar materials has been proposed by combining the L$^{2}$ projection method of stress-smoothing and the Loubignac's iterative method of improving the displacement field. Stress analysis was carried out on two examples which are made of highly dissimilar materials. As a result of the analysis, it is found that the proposed method provides improved continuity of the stress field over the entire domain as well as predicting accurate nodal stresses at the interface. In contrast, the conventional displacement-based finite element method provides significant stress discontinuties at the interfaces. In addition, it was found that the total strain energy evaluated from the improved continuous stress field converge to the exact value as increasing the number of iterations in the proposed method.

  • The resistance spot-welded region in most current finite element crash models is characterized as a rigid beam at the location of the welded spot. The region is modeled to fail with a failure criterion which is a function of the axial and shear load at the rigid beam. The role of this rigid beam is simply to transfer the load across the welded components. The calculation of the load acting on the rigid beam is important to evaluate the failure of the spot-weld. In this paper, numerical simulation is carried out to evaluate the calculation of the load at the rigid beam. The load calculated from the precise finite element model of the spot-welded region considering the residual stress due to the thermal history during the spot welding procedure is regarded as the reference value and the value of the load is compared with the one obtained from the spot-welded model using the rigid beam with respect to the element size, the element shape and the number of imposed constraints. Analysis results demonstrate that the load acting on the spot-welded element is correctly calculated by the change of the element shape around the welded region and the location of welded constrains. The results provide a guideline for an accurate finite element modeling of the spot-welded region in the crash analysis of vehicles.

  • A line integral is exhibited which has the same value for all paths surrounding the tip of crack in a two dimensional strain field of elastic-plasticc material. Finite element method was used to determine Rice's J-integral value in centrally cracked plate. These numerical J-integral values were compared with corresponding values of reference with low hardening and high yield strength. The J-integral value was also computed for a crack extension and different load condition. For increasing crack length the value of J-integral also increases, this means that the crack is unstable. To prove path independent, three paths were used in the analysis and proved.

  • We get a theorem which shows the existence of at least six solutions for the semilinear wave equation with nonlinearity crossing three eigenvalues. We obtain this result by the variational reduction method and the geometric mapping defined on the finite dimensional subspace. We use a contraction mapping principle to reduce the problem on the infinite dimensional space to that on the finite dimensional subspace. We construct a three-dimensional subspace with three axes spanned by three eigenvalues and a mapping from the finite dimensional subspace to the one-dimensional subspace.

  • A multi-span bridge has the peak value of resultant girder moment or membrane stress at the interior support. In this paper, the spline finite strip method (FSM) is modified to obtain the more appropriate solution at the interior support where the peak values of solution exist. The modification has been achieved by expressing the shape function with non-periodic B-splines which have multiple knots at the boundary. The modified B-splines have the useful feature for interpolating the curve with sudden change in curvature. Moreover, the modified spline FSM is very efficient in analyzing multi-span box girder bridges, since a bridge can be modeled by an assembly of strips extended along the entire bridge length. Numerical examples of the bridge analysis have been performed to verify the efficiency and accuracy of the new spline FSM.

  • The ultimate bearing capacity and failure mechanism of square footings resting on a sand layer over clay soil have been investigated numerically by performing a series of three-dimensional non-linear finite element analyses. The parameters investigated are the thickness of upper sand layer, strength of sand, undrained shear strength of lower clay and surcharge effect. The results obtained from finite element analyses were compared with those from previous design methods based on limit equilibrium approach. The results proved that the parameters investigated had considerable effect on the ultimate bearing capacity and failure mechanism occurring. It was also shown that the thickness of upper sand layer, the undrained shear strength of lower clay and the strength of sand are the most important parameters affecting the type of failure will occur. The value of the ultimate bearing capacity could be significantly different depending on the limit equilibrium method used.
