  • In this paper, a new boundary tracking algorithm for extracting finger area, which may be utilized by a finger crease pattern recognition algorithm, is proposed. Due to noise and irregular illumination, conventional algorithms for boundary tracking such as skeleton-based tracking methods were not suitable for typical boundary image of hand. So we propose a new finger boundary tracking algorithm utilizing a boundary-point-detection mask. We have observed that the proposed method provides stable and optimised boundary tracking.

  • This paper describes a charge sharing capacitive-sensing circuit technique that improves the quality of images captured with fingerprint sensor LSIs. When the finger is dry, the electrical resistance of a finger surface is high. It leads to poor image quality. To capture clear images even when the finger is dry, the modified capacitive detection circuit improves the image quality using an enhancement plate at the finger surface and a voltage control circuit. The test circuit is analyzed on $0.35{\mu}m$ CMOS process.

  • This paper defines a distance graph for a hand region in a depth image and proposes an algorithm detecting finger using it. The distance graph is a graph expressing the hand contour with angles and Euclidean distances between the center of palm and the hand contour. Since the distance graph has local maximum at fingertips' position, we can detect finger points and recognize the number of them. The hand contours are always divided into 360 angles and the angles are aligned with the center of the wrist as a starting point. And then the proposed algorithm can well detect fingers without influence of the size and orientation of the hand. Under some limited recognition test conditions, the recognition test's results show that the recognition rate is 100% under 1~3 fingers and 98% under 4~5 fingers and that the failure case can also be recognized by simple conditions to be available to add.

  • In this paper, we propose a paper keyboard piano implementation using the finger movement detection with the 3D image data from a kinect. Keyboard pattern and keyboard depth information are extracted from the color image and depth image to detect the touch event on the paper keyboard and to identify the touched key. Hand region detection error is unavoidable when using the simple comparison method between input depth image and background depth image, and this error is critical in key touch detection. Skin color is used to minimize the error. And finger tips are detected using contour detection with area limit and convex hull. Finally decision of key touch is carried out with the keyboard pattern information at the finger tip position. The experimental results showed that the proposed method can detect key touch with high accuracy. Paper keyboard piano can be utilized for the easy and convenient interface for the beginner to learn playing piano with the PC-based learning software.

  • In this paper, a new scheme to recognize a finger shape in the depth image captured by Kinect is proposed. Rigid transformation of an input finger shape is pre-processed for its robustness against the shape angle of input fingers. After extracting contour map from hand region, observing the change of contour pixel location is performed to calculate rotational compensation angle. For the finger shape recognition, we first acquire three pixel points, the most left, right, and top located pixel points. In the proposed algorithm, we first acquire three pixel points, the most left, right, and top located pixel points for the finger shape recognition, also we use geometrical features of human fingers such as Euclidean distance, the angle of the finger and the pixel area of hand region between each pixel points to recognize the finger shape. Through experimental results, we show that the proposed algorithm performs better than old schemes.

  • For sign languages are main communication means among hearing-impaired people, there are communication difficulties between speaking-oriented people and sign-language-oriented people. Automated sign-language recognition may resolve these communication problems. In sign languages, finger spelling is used to spell names and words that are not listed in the dictionary. There have been research activities for gesture and posture recognition using glove-based devices. However, these devices are often expensive, cumbersome, and inadequate for recognizing elaborate finger spelling. Use of colored patches or gloves also cause uneasiness. In this paper, a vision-based finger spelling recognition system is introduced. In our method, captured hand region images were separated from the background using a skin detection algorithm assuming that there are no skin-colored objects in the background. Then, hand postures were recognized using a two-dimensional grid analysis method. Our recognition system is not sensitive to the size or the rotation of the input posture images. By optimizing the weights of the posture features using a genetic algorithm, our system achieved high accuracy that matches other systems using devices or colored gloves. We applied our posture recognition system for detecting Korean Sign Language, achieving better than $93\%$ accuracy.

  • This paper presents a method for computer-assisted slide presentation using vision-based gesture recognition. The proposed method consists of a sequence of steps, first detecting a hand in the scene of projector beam, then estimating the smooth trajectory of a hand or a pointing finger using Kalman Filter, and finally interfacing to an application system. Additional slide navigation control includes moving back and forth the pages of the presentation. The proposed method is to help speakers for an effective presentation with natural improved interaction with the computer. In particular, the proposed method of using finger pointing is believed to be more effective than using a laser pointer since the hand, the pointing or finger are more visible and thus can better grab the attention of the audience.

  • Signal detection technologies such as fluorescence, charge and electrochemical detection used in the monolithic capillary electrophoresis system to convert the biochemical reaction into the electrical signal. The fluorescence detection using photodiodes that measure fluorescence emitted from eluting molecules is widely used for the monolithic capillary electrophoresis system. In this paper, in order to fabricate a photosensor has the increased sensitivity, we investigated on the sensitivity of general type and p-i-n type diode. The p-i-n diode has higher sensitivity than photodiode. Considering these results, we fabricated p-i-n diodes on the high resistive$(4k{\Omega}{\cdot}cm)$ wafer into rectangle and finger pattern and compared internal resistance of each pattern. The internal resistance of p-i-n diode can be decreased by the application of finger pattern has parallel resistance structure from $571{\Omega}$ to $393{\Omega}$.

  • A simplified integration process including packaging is presented, which enables the realization of the portable fluorescence detection system. A fluorescence detection microchip system consisting of an integrated PIN photodiode, an organic light emitting diode (OLED) as the light source, an interference filter, and a microchannel was developed. The on-chip fluorescence detector fabricated by poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS)-based packaging had thin-film structure. A silicon-based integrated PIN photo diode combined with an optical filter removed the background noise, which was produced by an excitation source, on the same substrate. The active area of the finger-type PIN photo diode was extended to obtain a higher detection sensitivity of fluorescence. The sensitivity and the limit of detection (LOD S/N = 3) of the system were $0.198\;nA/{\mu}M$ and $10\;{\mu}M$, respectively.

  • Recent studies show that fingerprint recognition technology is confronted with spoofing of artificial fingers. In order to overcome this problem, the fingerprint recognition system needs to distinguish a fake finger from a live finger. This paper examines existing software-based approaches for fingerprint liveness detection through experiments. Implemented and tested in this paper are the approaches based on deformation, wavelet, and perspiration. These approaches will be analyzed and compared based on experimental results.
