  • It is widely recognized that Hartmann tube for measuring the minimum ignition energy(MIE) of powder. But It requires long time and operational skills for measuring. As a variety of new fine powders are being produced day by day in industry, Japen has been developing a measurement system which employs a new method to create a dust/air mixture in a miniature combustion box. In this system, by vibration, the powder is successively fed downward through a hopper made up of metal mesh, and then it is formed into a thin, certain-like, dust/air mixture. With this new apparatus, three types of powder-Lycopodium, Anthraquinone, and Polyacry-lonitrile-were tested and the data of MIE were compared with those of a conventional apparatus (the Hartmann tube). Two of them agreed satisfactory, but the other, Anthraquinone, showed quite different values. It is guessed that the agglomerations of the powder particles appear because of particle shapes, static-charge and humidity.

  • LAS-system ceramic powder, spodumene ($Li_2O{\cdot}Al_2O_3{\cdot}4SiO_2$), was successfully synthesized by a chemical solution technique employing PVA(polyvinyl alcohol) as an organic carrier. The PVA content affected the microstructure of porous precursor gels and the crystalline development. The optimum PVA content contributed to homogeneous distribution of metal ions in the precursor gel and it resulted in the synthesis of glass free $\beta$-spodumene powder having a specific surface area of $7.57\;m^2/g$. The agglomerated $\beta$-spodumene powders were also enough soft to grind to fine powders by a simple ball milling process. The microstructures of the densified powder compacts were strongly dependant on the minor phases of spodumene solid solution and amount of liquid phase, which were formed from the inhomogeneous precursors.

  • Atomizing mode and powder characteristics of CuA1Ni base shape memory alloy in rotating disk atomization were investigated in accordance with disk materials and additional elements. Produced powders were classified into two types of spherical and flake shape. In the case of CuAlNiBTi and CuAlNiZr alloy, high yield rate and fine powder were obtained. This tendency was same when we used oxide coated disks. We concluded that this results were steno from the wetting characteristics change between molten metal and disk surface. Especially, due to the reactive properties of Ti and Zr with ceramic disk, the change of atomizing appearance and powder characteristics were noticeable.

  • Zirconia powder coated with alumina was prepared by hydrolysis of alumina butoxide. The coated powder was obtained by a hydrolysis reaction between the adsorbed water on the surface of zirconia particles and aluminum sec-butoxide. Amorphous aluminum hydroxide was uniformly coated on the surface of zirconia particles with the thickness of about 30 nm. The shape and distribution of aluminum hydroxide was varied with an existence of surfactant. The coated layer of aluminum hydroxide consists of the fine particle size, and the zirconia powder coated by alumina hydroxide have the large specific surface area of 120 $m^2$/g, compared with that of starting zirconia powder.

  • The reaction-sintered alumina and zirconia-alumina ceramics having low firing shrinkage were prepared from the Al/Al2O3 or Al/ZrO2(Ca-PSZ) powder mixtures via the attrition milling. And in this milling process the effect of the characteristics of used powders was investigated. Attrition milling was much more effective in reducing the particle size of ceramic/metal mixed powders than ball milling. Powder mixtures of flake-type Al with coarse alumina was much more effectively comminuted by the attrition milling than the mixtures of globular-type Al with coarse alumina powders. And coarse alumina than fine alumina was much more beneficial in cutting and reducing the ductile Al particles. In the contrary to Al/Al2O3 powder mixtures, Al/ZrO2 powder mixtures was not effectively comminutd. But whether using the alumina ball media or attrition milled with Al2O3 powder rather than Al, the milling efficiency was much more increased.

  • We developed the copper core ball electroplated with Sn-Ag-Cu of the eutectic composition which used mostly as Pb free solder ball with high reliability. In order to search for the practicality of this developed copper core ball, the evaluation was executed by measuring the initial joint strength of the sample mounted on the substrate and reflowed and by measuring the joint strength of the sample after the high temperature leaving test and the constant temperature and the humidity leaving test. This evaluation was compered with those of the usual other copper core balls electroplated with (Sn,Sn-Ag,Sn-Cu,Sn-Bi) and the Sn-Ag-Cu solder ball.

  • Nanostructured ceria powder was synthesized by a thermochemical process and investigated its applicability for an oxygen gas sensor. An amorphous precursor powders prepared by spray drying a cerium-nitrate solution were transformed successfully into nanostructured ceria by heat-treatment in air atmosphere. The powders were a loose agglomerated structure with extremely fine $CeO_2$ particles about 15 nm in size, resulting in a very high specific surface area $(110\;m^2/g)$. The oxygen sensitivity and the response time $t_{90}$ measured at sintered sample at $1000^{\circ}C$ was about -0.25 and very short, i.e., $3{\sim}5$ seconds, respectively.

  • The spherical and high quality Titanium fine powder "Tilop" has been produced with gas atomization furnace, Sumitomo Titanium Corporation originally designed. Recently, a new process which can produce Ti-alloy(Ti-6Al-4V) powders by utilizing our gas atomization process, of which raw material is sponge titanium pre-mixed with alloy chips or granules has been also developed. The particle size of gas atomized Ti-alloy powder and the mechanical properties of sintered Ti-alloy compacts prepared by metal injection molding were discussed in this study.

  • Protein-enriched dairy powder is widely consumed to promote muscle synthesis. Recently, in Korea, elderly people have also begun consuming protein powder products to prevent muscle loss. However, these protein-enriched powders have poor flowability and hydration properties because of the fine particles of spray-dried milk protein powder. Therefore, in this study, the fluidized bed agglomeration process was used to solve these problems. The rheological and physical properties of milk protein isolate (MPI)/skim milk powder (SMP) mixtures were effectively improved via fluidized bed agglomeration. The particle size of the MPI/SMP mixtures significantly increased from 35.7-58 ㎛ to 118-136 ㎛, the flowability level improved from fair (21.4-26.3) to good (15.7-16.3), and the cohesiveness level changed from intermediate (1.27-1.36) to low (1.18-1.19) after fluidized bed agglomeration. In addition, the wetting time of the agglomerated MPI/SMP mixtures was effectively reduced to 4.67-58.3 s by fluidized bed agglomeration. These findings may be useful for manufacturing protein-enriched dairy powders with good instant properties.

  • To make recycling aggregate, quantity of fine particles increase due to multi-crushing. Though this particles were mixed with recycling aggregate, those have to be disparted from aggregate in the high quality recycling aggregate, because of the cause of low quality. Considering reactivity, fine particles is better than coarse one. Therefore, it needs to develop suitable usage. We try to make cement extruding material by using the fine particles from concrete recycling, as a silicious replacement. Test results are as follows ; 1) Waste concrete powder has major ingredients such as $SiO_2$ and CaO, its density is $2.45g/cm^3$ being similar to silica powder, its diameter is range 13 to $141{\mu}m$. 2) Considering to strength properties according to particle size, specimen was made using small particles is higher strength than large one. 3) Despite of exception in the autoclaved curing, when the replacement of waste fine particle increase, strength of extruding panel shows almost same level.
