  • The glass-to-glass electrostatic bonding process in vacuum environment was developed and the tubeless-packaged FED was fabricated based on the bonding process. The fabricated tubeless-packaged FED showed stable field emission characteristics and potential applicability to the FED tubeless packaging and vacuum in-line sealing.

  • In this study, we prepared CNF (carbon nanofiber) by the solvothermal method for FED (field emission display) applications. We controlled several conditions to synthesize effective CNF for field emission applications. Nano-sizesd Pt nanoparticles were coated on the CNF. In this study, we have applied Pt nanoparticles- coated CNF which can be produced in mass, to field emission application.

  • The first 9-inch carbon nanotube based color field emission displays (FEDs) are integrated using a paste squeeze technique. The panel is composed of 576 x 242 lines with implementation of low voltage phosphors. The uniform and moving images are achieved only at $2V/{\mu}m$, This demonstrates a turning point of nanotube for large area and full color applications.

  • Carbon nanotube emitters, prepared by screen printing, have demonstrated a great potential towards low-cost, largearea field emission displays. Carbon nanotube paste, essential to the screen printing technology, was formulated to exhibit low threshold electric fields as well as an emission uniformity over a large area. Two different types of triode structures, normal gate and undergate, have been investigated, leading us to the optimal structure designing. These carbon nanotube FEDs demonstrated color separation and high brightness over 300 $cd/m^2$ at a video-speed operation of moving images. Our recent developments are discussed in details.

  • We mainly report recent progress in backlight unit (BLU) for liquid crystal display (LCD) using printed carbon nanotubes (CNTs) including top-gate and lateral gate structures. Lighting performances of CNTBLU and longevity of printed CNT emitters are intensively discussed. Selected issues related with field emission display (FED) using the same emitters also are presented.

  • The influence of ambient gases on field emission performance of Mo-field emitter array(FEA) in the frit-sealing step of field emission display(FED) packaging process was investigated. Mo-tip FEA was mounted on the glass substrate having a surrounded frit(Ferro FX11-137) and fired at $415^{\circ}C$ in the ambient gases of air, $N_2$ and Ar. The Ar gas was proved to be most proper ambient among the used gases through evaluating the turn-on voltage and field emission current of the fired Mo-tip FEA devices. It was confirmed that the Mo surface fired in Ar ambient was less oxidized when compared with another ones annealed in air and Ar ambient by the AFM, XPS, AES and SIMS analysis. Finally, the 3.5 inch-sized Mo-tip FED, which was packaged using frit-sealing process in the Ar ambient, was proposed.

  • The actively addressable carbon nanotube (CNT) emitters have been studied for stable and low-voltage driving field emission display (FED). The a-Si TFT and screen-printed CNT emitters were successfully integrated to fabricate the diode type active-matrix cathode and FED panel. Also, we propose a new FED architecture based on the actively controlled triode CNT emitters showing the properties of ideal triode type cathode with electron beam focusing effect.
