  • In recent years, the use of natural fiber as reinforcement in polymer composites to replace synthetic fiber such as glass fiber is receiving increasing attention. Because of increasing usage according to the high demand, the cost of thermoplastic has increased rapidly over the past decades. We used a thermoplastic polymer(polypropylene) as the matrix and a lignocellulosic material(rice-husk flour) as the reinforcement filler to prepare a particle-reinforced composite to examine the possibility of using lignocellulosic material as reinforcement filler and to determine data of test results for physical, mechanical and morphological properties of the composite according to the reinforcement filler content in respect to thermoplastic polymer, In this study, PLA/PP rice-husk fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composites that made by the hot press molding method according to appropriate manufacturing process was evaluated as mechanical properties.

  • Excellent environmental durability and handy installation procedure as well as high specific strength and stiffness have introduced fiber-reinforced polymeric composite materials into the civil and architectural engineering field. This study presents the considerably enhanced strength characteristics of the mortal beams by being reinforced with epoxy-bonded carbon fiber sheets(CFS). Three point bending and Charpy impact tests were performed on both of bare and reinforced mortar specimens. The influences of length, and the number of reinforcing plies were investigated. Strength reduction due to pre-existent notch was lessened dramatically. The acoustic emission(AE) measurement revealed the progressive damage process in reinforced specimens.

  • This paper investigated the damage transition mechanism between the fiber-breaking mode and the fiber-avoiding crack mode when the fiber-length is reduced in the unidirectional discontinuous carbon fiber-reinforced-plastics (CFRP) composites. The critical fiber-length for the transition is a key parameter for the manufacturing of flexible and high-strength CFRP composites with thermoset resin, because below this limit, we cannot take full advantage of the superior strength properties of fibers. For this discussion, we presented a numerical model for the microscopic damage and fracture of unidirectional discontinuous fiber-reinforced plastics. The model addressed the microscopic damage generated in these composites; the matrix crack with continuum damage mechanics model and the fiber breakage with the Weibull model for fiber strengths. With this numerical model, the damage transition behavior was discussed when the fiber length was varied. The comparison revealed that the length of discontinuous fibers in composites influences the formation and growth of the cluster of fiber-end damage, which causes the damage mode transition. Since the composite strength is significantly reduced below the critical fiber-length for the transition to fiber-avoiding crack mode, we should understand the damage mode transition appropriately with the analysis on the cluster growth of fiber-end damage.

  • The reliability of machined fiber reinforced composites (FRC) in high strength applications and the safety in using these components are often critically dependent upon the quality of surface produced by machining since the surface layer may drastically affect the strength and chemical resistance of the material [1,2,3,4]. Current study will discuss the characterization of fiber pull-out in orthogonal cutting of a fiber-matrix composite materials. A sparsely distributed idealized model composite material, namely a glass reinforced polyester (GFRP) was used as workpiece. Analysis method employs a force sensor and the signals from the sensor are processed using AR time series model. The experimental correlation between the fiber pull-out and the AR coefficients is examined first and effects of fiber orientation, cutting parameters and tool geometry on the fiber pull-out are also discussed.

  • Recently, natural fiber reinforced composite is attracting attention and considered as an environmentally friendly material. Usually cellulosic fibers are used to reinforce the composites, but some protein fibers such as silk and wool serve the same purpose. In this paper, we proposed a method of producing artistic composite from artistic fabric by using silk fiber reinforced biodegradable plastic, which is designated as 'silk composite', for reinforcement. In order to expand applications of the silk composite, we performed the compression molding of decorative laminates with woody material, which was selected as a core material, and examined the properties of molded decorative laminates with various content of the silk composite. Since plywood and medium-density fiberboard (MDF) are widely used for decorative laminates, we selected them as core materials. As a result, flexible decorative laminates with high flexural strength were obtained by compounding the silk composite with wood materials.

  • Due to many advantages of advanced composite material, research on the composite compression member is initiated. In this paper structural characteristics of concrete filled glass fiber reinforced composite tubular member si studied. Experimental results shows that strength and ductility of composite compression member is considerably increased due to concrete confinement action of composite surface. Thus it can be anticipated that increased strength of concrete will be incorporated in the design of composite compression member.

  • Fiber-reinforced materials have highly favorable mechanical properties. and their strength-to-weight ratios are superior to those of most alloys. When compared to metals they offer many other advantages as well. including non-corrosiveness. translucency. good bonding properties. and ease ofrepair. Fiber-reinforced materials can be categorized to pre-impregnated. impregnation required. dental laboratory products. chairside products and prefabricated posts. so it is not suprising that fiber-reinforced composites have potential for use in many applications in dentistry. Fiber-reinforced materials can be utilized in frameworks for crowns. anterior or posterior fixed prostheses. chairs ide tooth replacements. periodontal splints. customized posts. prefabricated posts. orthodontic retention. denture reinforcements and in implants dentistry. To realize the full potential of using fiber-reinforced composite restorations. it is essential that the clinician and laboratory technician understand concepts of tooth preparation and framework design. Also practitioner may appreciate the background information and other details about the materials themselves so that identify the rationale for their use in various clinical situations. select well-suited materials. and carry out related procedures. Understanding the material properties and take many attentions. fiber-reinforced materials will give more esthetic. more easy. more strong and more reliable restorations.ations.

  • Three phase composite materials are widely used in the shipbuilding industry. When reinforced with fiber and particle, the physical and mechanical properties of polymer composite materials are improved. This paper presents the bending analysis of a three phase composite plate with an epoxy matrix, reinforced glass fiber and titanium oxide particles including creep effect when shear stress is taken into account. The obtained results indicate that creep strains lead to compression in the composite material. Introducing reinforced fibers and particles reduces the plate's deflection, when increasing the stretch coefficient allows the calculation of creep deflection during a long loading period.

  • In this paper we present tile results of an experimental investigation on the physical and mechanical properties of carbon fiber grid, polymer mortar, and carbon fiber grid reinforced plain concrete flexural members. In order to repairing and reinforcing damaged and/or deteriorated existing concrete structural members, new materials have been developed and utilized in the construction industries. But the physical and mechanical behaviors of the material are not well understood. To use the material effectively various aspects of the material must be throughly investigated analytically as well as experimentally. In this investigation we found the physical and mechanical properties of carbon fiber grid and polymer mortar which are directly utilized in the repair and reinforcement design of damaged or deteriorated concrete structures. In addition, we also investigate the strengthening effect of carbon fiber grid on the plain concrete flexural test specimens. It was found that the material can be used to repair and strengthen the concrete structures effectively.
