  • Atmospheric pressure plasma treatment on carbon nanotube (CNT) surfaces was performed to modify reinforcement effect and interfacial adhesion of carbon fiber reinforced CNT-phenolic composites. The surface changes occurring on CNT treated with plasma were analyzed by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscope (FT-IR). The significant improvement of wettability on CNT was confirmed by static contact angle test after plasma treatment. Such plasma treatment resulted in a decrease in the advancing contact angle from $118^{\circ}$ to $60^{\circ}$. The interfacial adhesion between carbon fiber and CNT-phenolic composites increased by plasma treatment based on apparent modulus test results during quasi-static tensile strength. Furthermore, the proposed database offers valuable knowledge for evaluating interfacial shear strength (IFSS).

  • This study suggests the novel thermoplastic toughening agent, which can be applied in the monomer forms without increasing the viscosity of the epoxy resin and polymerized during the resin curing. The diazide (p-BAB) and dialkyne (SPB) compounds are synthesized and mixed with the epoxy resin and the carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composites are prepared using vacuum infusion process (VIP). Then, flexural and drop weight tests are performed to evaluate the improvement in the toughness of the prepared composites to investigate the potential of the novel toughening agent. When 10 phr of p-BAB and SPB is added, the flexural properties are improved, maintaining the modulus as well as the toughness is improved. Even with a small amount of polytriazolesulfone polymerized, due to the filtering effect of the solid SPB by the layered carbon fabrics during the VIP, the toughening and strengthening effect were observed from the novel toughening agent, which could be added in monomer forms, p-BAB and SPB. This suggests that the novel toughening agent has a potential to be used for the composites prepared from viscosity sensitive process, such as resin transfer molding and VIP.

  • Porosity in polymer matrix composites increases rapidly during thermochemical decomposition at high temperatures. The generation of pores reduces elastic moduli and failure strengths of composite materials, and gas pressures in internal pores influence thermomechanical behaviors. In this paper, micromechanical finite element analysis is carried out by using two-dimensional representative volume elements for unidirectionally fiber-reinforced composites with porous matrix. According to the state of the pores, effective elastic moduli, poroelastic parameters and failure strengths of the overall composites are investigated in detail. In particular, it is confirmed that the failure strengths in the transvers and through-thickness directions are predicted much more weakly than the strength of nonpored matrix, and decrease consistently as the porosity of matrix increases.

  • In this work, the surface treatment of aluminum/composites (graphite-epoxy composites) was investigated. The surface of composites was treated by $Ar^{+}$ ion beam under oxygen environment. The surface of aluminum was treated by DC plasma. The optimal condition of surface treatment for the composites was determined by measuring the contact angle as a function of ion dose. The optimal treatment condition of the aluminum was determined by measuring the contact angle and T-peel strength as a function of mixture ratio of acetylene gas to nitrogen gas. The mixture ratios used were 1:9, 3:7, 5:5, 7:3, and 9:1. The results showed that the contact angle of composites decreased from$ 81^{\circ}$ to $8^{\circ}$ as the ion dose increased from zero to $1$\times$10^{17}$ions/$\textrm{cm}^2$. The optimal condition of ion dose was $1$\times$10^{16}$ions/$\textrm{cm}^2$. The results also showed that the contact angle of aluminum was a minimum for the mixture ratio of 5:5. Similarly, the T-peel strength was a maximum for the mixture ratio of 5:5, which indicates that the optimal condition of mixture ratio of acetylene gas to nitrogen gas is 5:5.

  • The need to consider torsion in the design of members of a structure has recently been increasing; therefore, many studies on torsion have been carried out. Recent research was focused on the torsional performance of concrete according to the reinforcing materials used. Of particular interest, are torsion studies of beams made of SFRC(steel fiber reinforced concrete), and there has been increasing use of SFRC at construction sites. In contrast, research on the composite PVA-ECC (polyvinyl alcohol-engineered cementitious composite) has only covered its mechanical performance, though it exhibits excellent tensile-strain performance (better than SFRC). Therefore, research on the torsion of concrete beams retrofitted using PVA-ECC is lacking. In this study, the behavior characteristics and performance of reinforced-concrete beams retrofitted by PVA-ECC was investigated experimentally. The experimental results show that the resistance to torsional cracking is increased by PVA-ECC. In addition, the strain on the rebar of the specimen was found to be reduced.

  • The study covers the behavior of reinforced concrete deep beams loaded under 4-point bending, failed by shear and repaired using bonding glass fiber reinforced plastics fabrics (GFRP) patches. Two rehabilitation methods have been used to highlight the influence of the composite on the ultimate strength of the beams and their failure modes. In the first series of trials the work has been focused on the reinforcement/rehabilitation of the beam by following the continuous configuration of the FRP fabric. The patch with a U-shape did not provide satisfactory results because this reinforcement strategy does not allow to increase the ultimate strength or to avoid the abrupt shear failure mode. A second methodology of rehabilitation/reinforcement has been developed in the form of SCR (Strips of Critical Region), in which the composite materials reinforcements are positioned to band the inclined cracks (shear) caused by the shear force. The results obtained by using this method lead a superior out come in terms of ultimate strength and change of the failure mode from abrupt shearing to ductile bending.

  • The importance of public infrastructures' protection against crash or blast loads has been emerging issue as structures are becoming bigger and population densities in downtown cities are growing up. However, there exists no sufficient study which considers the developments of protective building materials, that are essential for protective design and construction. To assess the protection performance and the applicability as protective materials of high performance fiber reinforced cementitious composites(HPFRCC), this study performed the impact tests with 40 mm gas-gun propelled projectile crash machine. From this study, it has observed that both high compressive strength of cement matrix and fiber reinforcement are beneficial for the improvement of impact resistance.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop fiber reinforced cement matrix composite (ECC) produced with limestone powder in order to achieve high ductility of the composite, and to evaluate flexural performance of structural members made with ECC. Four kinds of mixture proportions were determined on the basis of the micromechanics and a steady state cracking theory considering the matrix fracture toughness and fiber-matrix interfacial characteristics. The mechanical properties of ECC, represented by strain-hardening behavior in uniaxial tension, were investigated. Also, strength property of the composite was experimentally evaluated. Two structural members made with ECC were produced and tested. Test results were compared with those of conventional concrete structural members. Increased limestone powder contents of ECC provides higher ductility of the composites while generally resulting in a lower strength property. ECC structural members exhibited higher flexural ductility, higher flexural load-carrying capacity and tighter crack width compared to conventional structural members.

  • PCM (Prepreg Compression Molding) process is a high-speed molding technology that can manufacture high-quality CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic) parts. Compared to the autoclave process, it generates less waste and can significantly reduce cycle time, so various studies are being conducted in the aerospace and automobile industries. In this study, in order to improve the quality of the PCM process, a molding method was developed to increase the compression pressure of the press step by step according to the curing behavior of the prepreg. It was confirmed that this multi-stage compression molding technology is a good means to produce high-quality CFRP products and shorten cycle times. And, the laminated prepreg at room temperature was immediately put into the mold and preheated and molded at the same time, so that it could be molded without a separate preheating process. In addition, as a result of applying the same process conditions optimized for flat plate molding to three-dimensional shapes, a product similar to a flat plate in appearance could be made without the process of establishing process conditions.

  • Molding of body with ribs is the most difficult during flow molding process. The rib area is easy to be deformed at the rear side due to wall thickness variation. In this study, relationships between molding condition and deflection of rib-shaped part is investigated during the compression molding of fiber reinforced plastic composites, and the following results are derived. Polypropylene(PP), Polystyrene(PS), and stampable sheet(SS 40wt%) show the increment of deflection along with releasing temperature. For the correlation between incremental holding pressure load and deflection, stampable sheet exhibits lower deflection along with higher holding pressure, while PS shows significant increase of deflection with higher holding pressure, PP shows completely different characteristic, significant reduction of deflection along with higher holding pressure. Regarding to mold temperature and deflection, deflection amount of SS is the biggest, and PS shows the smallest. In addition, all three kinds shows the highest amount of deflection at 173C. Deflection is reduced when mold closing speed is increased. Amount of deflection in SS is larger and is not highly dependent on molding conditions like holding pressure and cooling parameters, compared with single component material like PP. This can be elucidated by anisotropic and inhomogeneous characteristics of glass fiber during filling process of stampable sheet composite.
