This paper is concentrated on the behaviors of five different types of fiber reinforced concrete (FRC) in uniaxial tension and flexural impact. The complete stress-strain responses in tension were acquired through a systematic experimental program. It was found that the tensile peak strains of concrete with micro polyethylene (PEF) fiber are about 18-31% higher than that of matrix concrete, those for composite with macro polypropylene fiber is 40-83% higher than that of steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC). The fracture energy of composites with micro-fiber is 23-67% higher than that of matrix concrete; this for macro polypropylene fiber and steel fiber FRCs are about 150-210% and 270-320% larger than that of plain concrete respectively. Micro-fiber is more effective than macro-fiber for initial crack impact resistance; however, the failure impact resistance of macro-fiber is significantly larger than that of microfiber, especially macro-polypropylene-fiber.
The optical CT was developed to use twisted fibers for 170 kV GIS. The fiber sensor optimized on the optical CT was wound 3 turns and twisted 4 times per a turn at the pipe with a diameter of 130 mm. The measurement error for the linearity which was satisfied the criterion of 'IEC Class-1.0' was less than ± 0.44 % at the transmission type and ± 0.82 % at the reflection type to 2,000 A. At a low current to 200 A, the measurement error was ± 0.69% at the transmission type and ± 1.38 % at the reflection type.
We suggested the use of miniature hollow glass tubes having high ultraviolet (UV) transmission characteristics for the protection of optical-fiber-type UV sensors. We have recently proposed a highly sensitive optical sensor in the UV spectral range, using a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) coated with an azobenzene polymer as the photoresponsive material. In this study, we used UV-transparent miniature glass tubes to protect the etched FBG with the azobenzene polymer coating. This technique will be very useful for protecting various fiber-based UV sensors.
The effect of organic solvent in the dyeing of silk fiber by acid dye was investigated. Acetophenone and benzyl alcohol were shown to be the most effective for the rate of dyeing of silk fiber by Milling Cyanine 5R (C.I. Acid Blue 113), a milling type acid dye, but, with benzyl alcohol, the equilibrium dye uptake was much lower than that in the absence of it. In the presence of solvent, maximum dye uptake shifted to lower temperature than 6$0^{\circ}C$, while without solvent, it was shown at about $60^\circ{C}$. When dyed by Orange II (C.I. acid Orange 7) under same condition equilibrium dye uptake of silk fiber was lower than that for milling type acid dye, and in the presence of benzyl alcohol, still much lower uptake resulted. All these fact reveals that organic solvents in the solvent-assisted dyeing of silk fiber broaden micelle spacings too much, resulting in increased rate of dyeing, and decreased equilibrium dye uptake, contrary to wool.
Carbon composites were prepared with pitch-based round, C, hollow-type carbon fibers and pitch matrix. The thermal conductivities parallel and perpendicular to the fiber axis were measured by steady-state method. It was found that the thermal conductivities depended on the cross-sectional forms of the reinforcing fibers as well as the reinforcing orientation and carbon fiber precusors. Especially, mesophase pitch-based hollow carbon fiber-carbon composites had the most excellent thermal anisotropy, which was above 100.
This study is to investigate the properties on the load-deflection and fracture behaviors of the steel fiber reinforced concrete(SFRC) slab model specimens, Steel fibers of indent, crimp, and end hook shape were considered to reinforce the matrix under various mixing conditions and proportions. Initial cracking load, maximum load, and energy absorption capacity(load carrying capacity) of SFRC panel specimen increased with increase of steel fiber contents. And the plain concrete slab was fractured abruptly after maximum load but SRFC slabs were fractured smoothly by steel fibers in concrete matrix operated as cracking resistance force after maximum load. Indent, crimp and end hook shape steel fibers were effective in reinforcing the matrices but end hook type fiber were superior to indent and crimp type fibers.
The purpose of this study was manufactured and evaluated the bond performance of recycled polyethylene terephthalate(PET) bottle fiber reinforced concrete. Four deformed recycled PET bottle fibers were manufactured and pullout test was conducted in accordance with the JCI-SF 8. Test parameters included four different type of fiber geometry and two types of mortar specimens. According to bond test results, it was found that embossing type recycled PET bottle fiber was significant improving the pullout load and interface toughness.
Fiber reinforced composite materials are widely used in automotive industry to produce parts that are large, thin. lightweight. strong and stiff. It is very important to know a charge shape in order to have good products in the compression molding. In particular, the product such as a bumper beam is composed of the random and unidirectional fiber mats. This study analyzes numerically the characteristics of flow fronts such as a bulging phenomenon made by changing viscosity of random mat and unidirectional fiber mat and slip parameters. And it is discussed that the effect of ratio of viscosity A and stack type on mold filling parameters
This Paper describes a matched-filter type strain sensor system using optical fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor. Matched-filter type uses another wavelength-matched FBG filter to track wavelength shift in the FBG sensor. Filter FBG is attached on a fiber stretcher and stretched by PZT actuator. To overcome the nonlinearity and hysteresis of the PZT actuator that degrades system accuracy, a string resonator which can measure an absolute strain is employed. And the effect of vibration modes on string resonator is investigated particularly regarding its sensitivity and stability.
Flexural fracture characteristics of newly-developed Grid-type carbon fiber plastics in the deteriorated reinforced concrete structures were investigated by the four-points fracture test to verify the strengthening effects in the beam specimens. Results showed that initial cracks appeared in the boundary layers of fibers embedded in the newly-placed mortar concrete slowly progressed to the direction of supports and showed fracture of fiber plastics and brittle failure of concrete in compression in sequence after the yielding of steel reinforcement. Accordingly the reasonable area of Grid-type carbon-fiber plastics in the strengthening design of deteriorated RC structures should be limited and given based on the ultimate strength design method to avoid the brittle failure of concrete structures.
