In this study we report a wet-etching-based fabrication method for adiabatic optical-fiber tapers (OFTs), and describe their adiabaticity and HE11 mode evolution at a wavelength of 1550 nm. The profile of the fabricated system satisfies the adiabaticity properties well, and the far-field pattern from the etched OFT shows that the fundamental HE11 mode is maintained without a higher-order mode coupling throughout the tapers. In addition, the measured far-field pattern agrees well with the simulated result. The proposed adiabatic OFTs can be applied to a number of photonic applications, especially fiber-chip packages. Based on the fabricated adiabatic OFT structures, the optical transmission to the inversely tapered silicon waveguide shows large spatial-dimensional tolerances for 1 dB excess loss of ~60 ㎛ (silicon waveguide angle of 1°) and insertion loss of less than 0.4 dB (silicon waveguide angle of 4°), from the numerical simulation. The proposed adiabatic coupler shows the ultrabroadband coupling efficiency over the O- and C-bands.
In the performance of a wind turbine system, the blades play a vital role. However, they are susceptible to damage arising from complex and irregular loading (which may even cause catastrophic collapse), and they are expensive to maintain. Therefore, it is very important both to find defects after blade manufacturing is completed and to find damage after the blade is used for a certain period of time. This study provides a new perspective for the detection of internal defects in glass-fiber- and carbon-fiber-reinforced panels, which are used as the main materials in wind turbine blades. A gap or fracture between fiber-reinforced materials, which may occur during blade manufacturing or operation, is simulated by drilling a hole 5 mm in diameter in the middle layer of the laminated material. Then, a digital-image-correlation (DIC) method is used to detect internal defects in the blade. Tensile load is applied to the fabricated specimen using a tensile tester, and the generated changes are recorded and analyzed with the DIC system. In the glass-fiber-reinforced laminated specimen, internal defects were detected from a strain value of 5% until the end of the experiment, while in the case of the carbon-fiber-reinforced laminated specimen, internal defects were detected from 1% onward. It was proved using the DIC system that the defect was detected as a certain level of strain difference developed around the internal defects, according to the material properties.
Line lamps, which utilize leaky optical fibers based on periodic bending of plastic optical fibers, are proposed. The LED-optical fiber coupler, the key component of the line lamp, is designed and analyzed. The analysis by the Monte Carlo photon simulation method has shown that the optical coupling efficiency is affected rather sensitively by $\theta_w$, the slanting angle of the reflecting cup sidewall and $\rho_{ref}$, the reflectivity of the reflecting cup. The optical coupling efficiency of the coupler reaches the maximum when $\theta_w$ is about $60^{\circ}$, which is significantly larger than $\theta_w=45^{\circ}$, the typical sidewall slanting angle of the reflecting cup adopted in most LED lamps. When the reflectivity of the reflecting cup is above 0.8, the optical coupling efficiency is larger than 80%, which is the typical efficiency to be achieved in LD-optical fiber coupler.

In this paper, we report highly efficient second harmonic generation of continuous-wave Yb fiber lasers incorporating a periodically poled LiTaO3 device (MgO:PPSLT) as a frequency converter. The seed laser output from a Yb fiber master oscillator using a Fabry-Perot feedback cavity was amplified in a Yb fiber amplifier stage, yielding 28.5 W of linearly polarized output at 1064 nm in a beam with beam quality, M2, of ~1.07. Second harmonic generation was achieved by passing the laser beam through MgO:PPSLT. Under optimized conditions, we obtained 11.1 W of green laser output at 532 nm for an incident signal power of 25.0 W at 1064 nm, corresponding to a conversion efficiency of 44.4%. The detailed investigation to find the optimized operating conditions and prospects for further improvement are discussed.

Fiber-optic strain sensors based on Bragg reflection gratings produce the change of reflection spectrum when an external stress is applied on the sensor. To measure the Bragg reflection wavelength in high speed, an arrayed waveguide grating device is incorporated in this work. By monitoring the output power from each channel of the AWG, the peak wavelength corresponding to the applied strain could be obtained. To enhance the accuracy of the AWG wavelength interrogation system, a chirped fiber Bragg grating with a 3-dB bandwith of 5.4 nm is utilized. The high-speed response of the proposed system is demonstrated by measuring a fast varying strain produced by the damped oscillation of a cantilever. An oscillation frequency of 17.8 Hz and a damping time constant of 0.96 second are obtained in this measurement.

We designed and fabricated dichroic filters for high-power fiber lasers to protect the pumping laser diode from counterpropagating laser beams. The transmittance at laser diode wavelengths of 905 nm~925 nm was designed to be less than 0.1% and the transmittance at the fiber laser or Brillouin scattering wavelengths of 1020 nm ~ 1100 nm was designed to be more than 99.9%. Since oxide materials have good adhesion to the $SiO_2$ substrate, $SiO_2/Ta_2O_5$ were used as coating materials. The filter was fabricated according to our optimized design and its characteristics were compared with the theoretical design. As a result, the transmittance at laser diode wavelengths of 905 nm~925 nm was measured to be less than 0.1%, and the transmittance at the fiber laser or Brillouin scattering wavelengths of 1020 nm~1100 nm was measured to be more than 95.5%, which coincided well with the theoretical design considering processing errors. The filter was found to operate well over 1W of input laser power.
A fiber-optic magnetic sensor system for the detection of small ac magnetic field(200Hz-2 kHz) was constructed. Magnetic field sensing part was fabricated by bonding a section of optical fiber to amorphous metallic glass(2605SC) having large magnetostriction effect. And with the directional coupler, all fiber type Mach-Zehnder interferometer was constructed to measure the variation of the external magnetic field by translating it into the optical phase shift in the interferometer. The signal fading problem of the interferometer, which is due to random phase drifts originated from the environment, i.e., temperature fluctuation, vibrations, etc., was elliminated by feedback phase compensation. This allows the sensitivity to be maintained at the maximum by keeping the interferometer in quadrature phase condition. The frequency response of metallic glass was found to be nearly flat in the range of 90 Hz-2 kHz and dc bias field for the maximum ac response was 3.5 Oe. The interferometer output showed good linearity over the range $\pm$0.5 Oe. For 1 kHz ac magnetic field the scale factor S and the minimum detectable magnetic field were measured to be 8.0 rad/Oe and $3X10^{-6} Oe/\sqrt{Hz}$at 1 Hz detection bandwidth respectively.
A fiber-phase-noise compensating system was constructed for a 1.4 GHz reference frequency transferred through a 13-km-long fiber spool. The transfer instability was dependent on the temperature variation of the compensating system. With the room temperature variation stabilized within $0.3^{\circ}C$, the transfer instability was $4.6{\times}10^{-14}$ at 0.8 s of average time and $2.5{\times}10^{-16}$ at 1000 s of average time with the fiber phase noise compensated. However, with the room temperature changed by $3.5^{\circ}C$, the transfer instability was $6.8{\times}10^{-14}$ at 1.2 s of average time and $3.0{\times}10^{-15}$ at 1000 s of average time. From this result, the temperature stability condition for the experimental setup could be determined to obtain a transfer instability of $10^{-16}$ at 1000 s of average time.
We have developed a linearly polarized high-power Yb-doped fiber laser in the master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) scheme for efficient spectral beam combining. We modulated the phase of the seed laser by pseudo-random binary sequence (PRBS), with the bit length optimized to suppress stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS), and subsequently amplified seed power in a 3-stage amplifier system. We have constructed by coiling the polarization-maintaining (PM) Yb-doped fiber, with core and cladding diameters of 20 ㎛ and 400 ㎛ respectively, to a diameter of 9-12 cm for suppression of the mode instability (MI). Finally, we obtained an output power of 1.004 kW with a slope efficiency of 83.7% in the main amplification stage. The beam quality factor M2 and the polarization extinction ratio (PER) were measured to be 1.12 and 21.5 dB respectively. Furthermore, the peak-intensity difference between the Rayleigh signal and SBS signal was observed to be 2.36 dB in the backward spectra, indicating that SBS is successfully suppressed. In addition, it can be expected that the MI does not occur because not only there is no decrease in slope efficiency, but also the beam quality for each amplified output is maintained.
Over the past two decades, fiber-based lasers have made remarkable progress, now having reached power levels exceeding kilowatts and drawing a huge amount of attention from academy and industry as a replacement technology for bulk lasers. In this paper we review the significant factors that have led to the progress of fiber lasers, such as gain-fiber regimes based on ytterbium-doped silica, optical pumping schemes through the combination of laser diodes and double-clad fiber geometries, and tandem schemes for minimizing quantum defects. Furthermore, we discuss various power-limitation issues that are expected to incur with respect to the ultimate power scaling of fiber lasers, such as efficiency degradation, thermal hazard, and system-instability growth in fiber lasers, and various relevant methods to alleviate the aforementioned issues. This discussion includes fiber nonlinear effects, fiber damage, and modal-instability issues, which become more significant as the power level is scaled up. In addition, we also review beam-combining techniques, which are currently receiving a lot of attention as an alternative solution to the power-scaling limitation of high-power fiber lasers. In particular, we focus more on the discussion of the schematics of a spectral beam-combining system and their individual requirements. Finally, we discuss prospects for the future development of fiber laser technologies, for them to leap forward from where they are now, and to continue to advance in terms of their power scalability.
