This study has been carried out to the low temperature plasma nitriding treatment on the mechanical properties of stainless steel at temperature range between $400^{\circ}C$ and $500^{\circ}C$. It was found that there was precipitated to free CrN matrix below $400^{\circ}C$ and there was precipitated S-phase of STS 316L, ${\varepsilon}$-phase of STS 409L and ${\alpha}N$-phase of STS 420J2. STS 316L has formed relatively abundant CrN phase and ${\gamma}^{\prime}-Fe_4N$ phase at $500^{\circ}C$, alternatively STS 409L and STS 420J2 were more deeply nitrided than STS 316L at $500^{\circ}C$.

Ferritic STS 439 Steel sheet were deformed by hot rolling with and without lubricant. The effect of friction between roll and specimen on inhomogeneous texture was studied by means of EBSD, XRD texture analysis. The textures were compared with those of obtained by Taylor FEM simulation. High friction between roll and sheet gave rise to the formation of the inhomogeneous shear texture through thickness.
This study has been investigated the effect of high temperature gas nitriding (HTGN) heat treatment of STS 444 (18Cr-0.01Ni-0.01C-0.2Nb) ferritic stainless steel in an atmosphere of nitrogen gas at the temperature range between $1050^{\circ}C\;and\;1150^{\circ}C$. The surface layer was changed into martensite and austenite with the nitrides of NbCrN by HTGN treatment. Due to the precipitation of nitrides and matrensite formation, the hardness of the surface layer showed $400Hv{\sim}530Hv$. The nitrogen concentration of the surface layer appeared as 0.05%, 0.12% and 0.92%, respectively, at $1050^{\circ}C,\;1100^{\circ}C\;and\;1150^{\circ}C$. When the nitrogen is permeated from surface to interior, Nb and Cr, which have strong affinities with nitrogen, also move from interior to surface. Therefore it is considered that this counter-current of atoms promotes the formation of NbCrN at the surface layer.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the ultimate strength and curling influence using finite element analysis based on the previous test results of ferritic stainless steel bolted connections. Results obtained from finite element analysis (FEA) were compared with those of test results and the validity of numerical modeling was verified. The conditions of curing occurrence for edge/end distance were investigated and ultimate strength reduction ratio caused by curling was estimated quantitatively. Moreover, the ultimate behaviors such as fracture mode and ultimate strength by FEA were compared with those predicted by current design specifications such as AISC, KBC2009, AIJ and AISI.
A wet type scrubber for merchant vessel uses super austenitic stainless steels with pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN) of 40 or higher for operation in a harsh corrosive environment. However, it is expensive due to a high nickel content. Thus, electrochemical behavior and cavitation erosion characteristics of UNS S32750 as an alternative material were investigated. Microstructure analysis revealed fractions of ferritic and austenitic phases of 48% and 52%, respectively, confirming the existence of ferritic matrix and austenitic island. Potentiodynamic polarization test revealed damage at the interface of the two phases because of galvanic corrosion due to different chemical compositions of ferritic and austenitic phases. After a cavitation test, a compressive residual stress was formed on the material surface due to impact pressure of cavity. Surface hardness was improved by water cavitation peening effect. Hardness value was the highest at 30 ㎛ amplitude. Scanning electron microscopy revealed wave patterns due to plastic deformation caused by impact pressure of the cavity. The depth of surface damage increased with amplitude. Cavitation test revealed larger damage caused by erosion in the ferritic phase due to brittle fracture derived from different strain rate sensitivity index of FCC and BCC structures.
Plasma nitriding of stainless steels has been investigated over a range of temperature from 400 to $500^{\circ}C$ and time from 10 to 20 hours. Characterization of systematic materials was carried out in terms of mechanical properties and corrosion behaviors. The results showed that plasma nitriding conducted at low temperatures not only increased the surface hardness, but also improved the corrosion resistance of STS 316L, STS409L, and STS 420J2. It was found that plasma-nitriding treatment at $500^{\circ}C$ resulted in increasing the corrosion performance of STS 409L and STS 420J2, while STS 316L was observed with server and massive damage on surface due to the formation of CrN.

The application of SS400 carbon steel and AISI430 ferritic stainless steel joint has been increased in industries because of the advantage of both metals was able to increase the service lifetime of the important structures. Therefore, a fusion welding process that could produce a sound weld and good joint properties should be optimized. This research is aimed to weld a butt joint of SS400 carbon steel and AISI430 ferritic stainless steel using Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) welding process and to study the effects of welding parameters on joint properties. The experimental results were concluded as follows. The optimized welding parameter that produced the tensile strength of 448 MPa was the welding current of 110A, the welding speed of 400 mm/min and the mixed gas of $80%Ar+20%CO_2$. Increase of the welding current affected to increase and decrease the tensile strength of the joint, respectively. Lower welding current produced the incomplete bonding of the metals and indicated the low tensile strength. Microstructure investigation of the welded joint showed a columnar grain in the weld metal and a coarse grain in the heat affected zone (HAZ). The unknown hard precipitated phases were also found at the grain boundaries of the weld metal and HAZ. The hardness profile did not show the difference of the hardness on the joint that was welded by various welding currents but the hardness of the weld metal was higher than that of the other location.
Fundamental deformation mechanism and plastic behavior of AISI304 austenitic stainless steel were investigated to evaluate press formability. Local and uniform deformation capacity of AISI304 steel were compared to those of ferritic AISI430 steel and Al killed low carbon steel. Nine kinds of austenitic stainless steels having different austenite stabilities were made in laboratory scale to examine the transformation behavior in various deformation mode and variation of mechanical properties. Deformation path and strain distributions along edge corner of commercial sink die were illustrated and effect of austenite stability on press forming of sink die was clarified with experiments using square cup drawing tools.
In cold-formed steel structures, such as trusses, wall frames and portal frames, the use of back-to-back built-up cold-formed stainless-steel lipped channels as compression members are becoming increasingly popular. The advantages of using stainless-steel as structural members are corrosion resistance and durability, compared with carbon steel. The AISI/ASCE Standard, SEI/ASCE-8-02 and AS/NZS do not include the design of stainless-steel built-up channels and very few experimental tests or finite element analyses have been reported in the literature for such back-to back cold-formed stainless-steel channels. Current guidance by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) and the Australian and New Zealand (gAS/NZS) standards for built-up carbon steel sections only describe a modified slenderness approach, to consider the spacing of the intermediate fasteners. Thus, this paper presents a numerical investigation on the behavior of back-to-back cold-formed stainless-steel built-up lipped channels. Three different grades of stainless steel i.e., duplex EN1.4462, ferritic EN1.4003 and austenitic EN1.4404 have been considered. Effect of screw spacing on the axial strength of such built-up channels was investigated. As expected, most of the short and intermediate columns failed by either local-global or local-distortional buckling interactions, whereas the long columns, failed by global buckling. All three grades of stainless-steel stub columns failed by local buckling. A comprehensive parametric study was then carried out covering a wide range of slenderness and different cross-sectional geometries to assess the performance of the current design guidelines by AISI and AS/NZS. In total, 647 finite element models were analyzed. From the results of the parametric study, it was found that the AISI & AS/NZS are conservative by around 10 to 20% for cold-formed stainless-steel built-up lipped channels failed through overall buckling, irrespective of the stainless-steel grades. However, the AISI and AS/NZS can be un-conservative by around 6% for all three grades of stainless-steel built-up channels, which failed by local buckling.

The concentration and diffusion coefficient of oxide ion vacancies in the oxide scale formed on Fe-22Cr-0.5Mn ferritic stainless steel with and without molybdenum (Mo) was measured at 800℃ by the electrochemical polarization method. After pre-oxidation for 100 h in ambient air at 800 ℃, the oxide scale on one side was completely removed with sandpaper. A YSZ plate was placed on the side where the oxide scale remained. Platinum (Pt) meshes were attached on the top of the YSZ plate and the side where the oxide scale was removed. Changes in electrical current were measured after applying an electrical potential through Pt wires welded to the Pt meshes. The results were interpreted by solving the diffusion equation. The diffusion coefficient and concentration of oxide ion vacancy decreased by 30% and 70% in the specimen with Mo, respectively, compared to the specimen without Mo. The oxide ion vacancy concentration of chromia decreased due to the addition of Mo.
