And there is a need to develop a promoting program of quality of life for the adolescents considering the stress and the mother-adolescent communication.
The purposes of this study were 1) to identify the effects of psychological characteristics and peer acceptance on female adolescents'clothing behaviors(clothing attitudes and preference for up-to-date style), and 2) to determine the differences in psychological characteristics and clothing behaviors among subject groups classified by sociometric status. The questionnaires dealing with public/private self-consciousness, adolescent egocentrism, self-efficacy and clothing behaviors were adapted from precious studies. Peer acceptance was measured using Coie and Dodge(1983) method. The data were collected from 485 middle and high school girls living in Seoul, Korea. From the results of multiple regression of psychological characteristics and peer acceptance on clothing behaviors, clothing sexual attractiveness, clothing exhibition, and clothing importance were found to be influenced by public self-consciousness, adolescent egocentrism and peer acceptance. Fashion leadership and psychological dependence were influenced by egocentrism and self-efficacy. Preference for up-to-date style was influenced by egocentrism, public self-consciousness and self-efficacy. One-way ANOVA was used for analyzing the differences in research variables among subject groups classified by sociometric status. From the reset of middle school girls it was revealed that ignored group showed the highest score in clothing importance, whereas both popular group and rejected group showed the lowest score in social self-efficacy. In high school girls, controversial group showed the highest scores in adolescent egocentrism, fashion leadership, and preference for up-to-date style.

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics of adolescents hospitalized through the emergency room for intentional self-harm or suicide attempts. Methods: This retrospective study used data from the Korean National Hospital Discharge In-depth Injury Survey conducted between 2006 and 2018 for individuals aged 10-24 years. The clinical characteristics of the patients were analyzed and compared across sex and age groups using the Rao-Scott chi-square tests and multiple logistic regression analysis for complex survey data. Results: The most common psychiatric diagnosis was mood disorder (22.0%), and more female patients were diagnosed with it than male patients (p=0.010). The 19-24 years age group was diagnosed with mood disorder the most compared to other younger groups (p=0.012). Male patients used lethal methods more than female patients (p=0.008), and the 19-24 years age group used more drug poisoning and cutting or piercing (p<0.001) for intentional self-harm or suicide attempts than younger groups. Conclusion: Adolescents hospitalized for intentional self-harm or suicide attempts showed significant differences in clinical characteristics across sex and age groups. These findings suggest that measures for preventing self-harm or suicide attempts need to be differentiated according to the sex and age of adolescents.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to identify the longitudinal relationship between child maltreatment and adolescent suicidal ideation. Several studies suggest that child maltreatment is associated with adolescent suicidal ideation. However, these studies have not focused on the duration of child maltreatment. Methods: Participants were 420 adolescents (52.6% male; 47.4% female) involved in the Korea Welfare Panel Study. Data were collected via youth self-report in 2006, 2009, and 2012. A self-report assessment of children and youths' experiences of physical, emotional, or neglect had been surveyed longitudinally. Questionnaires on adolescent suicidal ideation were answered in 2012. A growth mixture model and multiple regression were conducted using Mplus 5.21. Results: The study results showed that 93.5% of the children had experienced no maltreatment; 6.5% had experienced increasing maltreatment longitudinally. The trajectory of increasing maltreatment was positively associated with adolescent suicidal ideation. Conclusion: These results show that children suffering from chronic maltreatment are subject to a high risk of suicide and therefore require continuous supervision and management.
Prenatal nicotine exposure over an entire pregnancy has been associated with an increased prevalence of hyperactivity, anxiety-like behavior and depression-like behavior in mature rats. However, the effects of maternal nicotine exposure in late gestation and lactation on the psychology and behavior of adolescent rat offspring are unclear. Thus, we investigated the effect of nicotine exposure during late gestation and lactation on anxiety-like and impulsive decision-making behavior in adolescent offspring of rat. Female rats were orally exposed to nicotine which is within range of plasma level of human chronic smokers during the period of third last period of gestation and lactation. When the offspring were weaned, we observed alterations in the anxiety-like behavior and decision-making ability of adolescent rat offspring using light/dark box test and T-maze delay-based cost-benefit decision-making task. The maternal consumption of nicotine reduced both the time spent in the light compartment and the number of transitions compared to nicotine-free rats. Moreover, such nicotine exposed adolescent offspring rats showed impulsive decision making which chose the instant reward in a decision-making situation. We found that nicotine exposure during late gestation and lactation induces an increase in anxiety-like and impulsive decision-making behavior at this developmental stage. These findings suggest that maternal nicotine-exposed offspring are at an increased risk of developing anxious and impulsive behavior.
The purpose of this study is to examine adolescent future orientation in relation to education, work and career, and marriage and family. This study also explores the effects of adolescent future orientation in relation to their psychosocial characteristics: self-esteem, self-control, scholastic performance, and sexual permissiveness. Data were collected from 345 students in the second grade (male: 166, female: 179) of two middle schools in Seoul, Korea. Scale for adolescent future orientation was formulated based on literature review. The major findings of this study were as follows. Adolescents were found to be more future-oriented in the areas of work and career and in the area of marriage and family than in the area of education. Several hierarchical multiple regression analyses were also performed to examine the contribution of socio-demographic characteristics and future orientation to predictions of adolescent psychosocial characteristics. This study found that adolescent future orientation significantly predicted their self-esteem, self-control, and scholastic performance, while having no significant influence on sexual permissiveness.
The purpose of study was to test the hypothesis that three are differences in body size dietary behavior and nutrient intakes of adolescent girls with weight control experience. Cross-sectional survey was carried out with a questionnaire and anthropometric measurements . Subjects were 724 healthy adolescent girls from middle and high schools of urban and rural areas in Inchon and divided into two subgroups with weight control experience. Subjects trying to lose weigh were 25.1% in middle school girls and 47.1% in high school girls. There were significant differences in weight and BMI between weight control experience and non- experienced groups in middle school students. There were significant differences in skipping meals and reason of skipping meals between weigh control experience and non-experience groups which might show that skipping meal was used as a weight loss method among female school students. There was no significant difference in nutrient intakes between weight control experienced and non-experienced groups in middle and high school subjects. these results suggest that nutrition education is necessary for adolescent girls to practice appropriate weigh control strategies including desirable eating habits and adequate intake of nutrients such as energy vitamin A vitamin B$_2$calcium and iron.

Objectives: It is hard to accumulate research data on adolescents' suicide, because friends and family of the suicide completers might be reluctant to share the experience. To overcome the lack of information on adolescent suicide victims, the authors examined the risk and protective factors for adolescents' suicide from a character in a novel. Methods: Krystal, an adolescent female in the novel The Casual Vacancy by Joanne Rowling, failed to overcome her unfortunate circumstances and committed suicide. The authors analysed Krystal's case based on the guideline for patients with suicidal behaviours to address the complicated situation of her death. Results: Krystal grew up in a poor and dangerous environment. Despite the environmental hardships, she developed ego maturation with affectionate help from Mr Fairbrother, an assistant coach of the Girls' Rowing Team and a parish councillor. The sudden passing away of Mr Fairbrother brought on a crisis of identity for Krystal. In addition, a villainous character raped her and her brother drowned to death, which brought her great sorrow. She felt helpless and committed suicide. Conclusion: In spite of many risk factors for suicide, Krystal was able to keep her life with a few protective factors, a younger brother in the home, and a sense of responsibility for the family. After the loss of her brother, however, she collapsed in a moment. Krystal's suicide might not only be a personal choice but a breakdown of the social protection system for the youth.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of appearance instrumentality on body satisfaction and appearance management behaviors by adolescent' sex. The subjects were 750 adolescents in Daejeon and Chungnam province. The research method was a survey and the measuring instruments consisted of appearance instrumentality, body satisfaction, appearance management behaviors, and subjects' demographics attributions. The data were analyzed by Cronbach's ${\alpha}$, factor analysis, cluster analysis, ${\chi}^2$ test, and t-test, using SPSS statistical program. The results were as follows. First, 3 dimensions(the utility of interpersonal relationship, social achievement and sexual partnership) were emerged on appearance instrumentality, and adolescents were divided into 2 groups(unreceptive and receptive group) by appearance instrumentality. Second, appearance instrumentality had significant effects on female adolescents' body satisfaction; receptive group was more dissatisfied with their bodies, especially weight, hip, abdomen, and body shape than unreceptive group. However, it had no significant effects on male adolescents' body satisfaction. Third, appearance instrumentality had many significant effects on male and female adolescents' appearance management behaviors. Especially, female receptive group had higher intention to perform professional care by a sliming club, beauty salon, and dermatology, and face plastic surgery than unreceptive group.
