An oxidation behavior of 304 and 316 stainless steels were studied in dry air. After solution treatment, specimens were polished up to $1{\mu}m$$A1_2O_3$ grade and then subjected to oxidation treatment in dry air at $800^{\circ}C{\sim}1200^{\circ}C$. The oxidation behavior between matrix and oxide scale was analyzed with SEM, EDS and XRD. When oxidation treatment was conducted at $1200^{\circ}C$, large thickness of Fe oxide scale was formed on top of surface and fine $(Cr,Fe)_2O_3$ oxide film was formed below it. Cr rich zone existed at interface between metal and $(Cr,Fe)_2O_3$ oxide layer, and it was believed that this zone acted as obstacle to oxidation. Most of Ni was detected at the interface between metal and $(Cr,Fe)_2O_3$ and also detected at the interface between $Fe_2O_3$ and $(Cr,Fe)_2O_3$.
The wear behavior of alumina short fiber reinforced tin-bronze matrix composites was studied at the room temperature and an elevated temperature. The effect of the composition of specimens and the variation of wear conditions on the wear properties was examined by a pin-on-disc type wear testing machine. The wear mechanism according to the compositon of specimens at various wear conditions was discussed by the observation of the microstructure and the analysis of the composition on the worn surfaces. A thicker oxide layer on worn surfaces led to a lower wear loss because of the lubricating effect of oxide layers between pin and disc. As the testing temperature was raised to 350$^{\circ}$C, the fiber reinforced composites exibited markedly increased wear resistance even at a higher applied load since the reinforcement of composites with alumina fibers was not affected to a large extent by raising temperature. The results obtained by AES and EDS analysis indicated that the oxide layer of the worn surfaces formed at 350$^{\circ}$C was proved as Fe-oxide. This was explained by the faster formation of Fe-oxide than Cu-oxide at 350$^{\circ}$C.
The characteristics of a titanium oxide layer prepared using a plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) process were investigated, using an extended gate ion sensitive field effect transistor (EG-ISFET) to confirm the layer's capability to react with hydrogen ions. The surface morphology and element distribution of the PEO-processed titanium oxide were observed and analyzed using field-emission scanning-electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and energy-distribution spectroscopy (EDS). The titanium oxide prepared by the PEO process was utilized as a hydrogen-ion sensing membrane and an extended gate insulator. A commercially available n-channel enhancement MOS-FET (metal-oxide-semiconductor FET) played a role as a transducer. The responses of the PEO-processed titanium oxide to different pH solutions were analyzed. The output drain current was linearly related to the pH solutions in the range of pH 4 to pH 12. It was confirmed that the titanium-oxide layer prepared by the PEO process could feasibly be used as a hydrogen-ion-sensing membrane for EGFET measurements.
The effect of post oxidation, water-quenched after holding in air for 5~420 seconds or cooling or furnace cooling, on corrosion resistance and phase formation characteristics of the surface layer of SM20C and SM45C carbon steels after gas nirtrocarbursing in the $NH_3-5%CO_2-N_2$ gas atmosphere at $580^{\circ}C$ for 3hours is studied. The compound layers of two steels consist of ${\varepsilon}-Fe_{2-3}N$, ${\gamma}^{\prime}-Fe_4N$ and $Fe_3O_4$, phases, however, the quantity of ${\gamma}^{\prime}-Fe_4N$ phase increases for the furnace cooled specimen compared to that of air cooling specimen. With increasing $NH_3$ content in the gas mixture and also increasing the keeping time in the air after gas nitrocarburising, the ${\varepsilon}-Fe_{2-3}N$ phase of compound layer increases, while the decreased current density recognizing the improvement of corrosion resistance are shown. the passive current density of SM45C steel is lower than that of SM20C steel at the same nitrocarburising conditions.

We have used the modified diffusion flame burner to synthesize silica coated iron oxide nanoparticles having enhanced superparamagnetic property. Silica-encapsulated iron oxide particles were directly observed using a high resolution transmission electron microscope. From the energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and zeta potential measurements, the iron oxide particles were found to be completely covered by a silica coating layer. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements revealed that the iron oxide core consists of ${\gamma}-Fe_2O_3$ rather than ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$. Our magnetization measurements support this conclusion. Biocompatibility test of the silica-coated iron oxide nanoparticles is also conducted using the protein adsorption onto the coated particle.

Multiferroic properties of $BaTiO_3-CuFe_2O_4$ thin films grown on highly-textured Pt(111)/$TiO_2/SiO_2$/Si(100) substrates were studied. $CuFe_2O_4$ ceramic target was synthesized by mixing oxide powders of CuO, $Fe_2O_03$, $BaTiO_3$ ceramic target was also prepared separately. The film structure was of bi-layer type, where $BaTiO_3$ layer lies underneath of $CuFe_2O_4$ layer, where both layers were grown by pulsed laser deposition technique. We will report the ferroelectric and magnetic properties of $BaTiO_3-CuFe_2O_4$ bi-layer films in some detail.

In recent years the interest on flexible display has been increasing as a future display due to its bendable characteristics. An ITO(indium tin oxide) layer, which is part of a flexible display, can be broken easily while bending because it is made of brittle materials. This brittle property can cause the malfunction of flexible display. To analyze fracture characteristics of ITO layer, bending test was conducted commonly. However, it is not possible to know specific phenomena on bended ITO layer by simple bending test only. Accordingly, in this study, the FE(finite element) model is developed similarly to a real flexible display to analyze stress distribution of flexible display under bending condition, especially on ITO layer. To validate FE model, actual bending test was conducted and the test results were compared with the simulation results by measuring reaction forces during bending. By using the developed model, FE analysis about the effect of design parameter (Thickness & Young's Modulus of BL) on ITO Layer was performed. By explained FE analysis above, this research draws a conclusion of reliable design guide of flexible display, especially on ITO layer.
The corroded surface of cold rolled steel sheet in the process of rinsing after alkali-cleaning was examined by means of X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy(XPS). In addition, the surface-treated cold rolled steel with 0.05wt% $Na_5P_3O_{10}$ solution for the purpose of preventing the corrosion was examined by means of XPS and the results were compared with those for the non-treated cold rolled steel. It was found that the corroded surface consists of $Fe_2O_3$, FeO and $Fe(OH)_3$ and the thickness of the oxide layer is about $1500{\AA}$. On the other hand, in the case of surface-treated cold rolled steel, the phosphate layer of $60{\AA}$ thickness was found to act as a protective film over the relatively thin Fe oxide layer.
In a salb-preheating furnace of steel-making industry, the oxidation/degradation behavior of Cr3C2 ceramic composited dkid button reaction with scale in Fe-oxide system occurs and was thermodynamically examined. The reaction of scale with Cr3C2 skid button produces Cr3C2(s) and C(s), and Co gas is then evolved from the reaction of C(s) with Fe-scale. Cr3C2(s) from oxidation of Cr3C2(s) reacted with Fe-oxide(s) becomes high-melting chromite. The chromite acts as protection layer against further oxidation and improves resistance of the reaction of Cr3C2 skid button with Fe-scale.
In order to analyze the formation mechanism of iron oxide nanoparticles, we measured the heat flow of $Fe(OL)_3$ precursor with temperature, and TEM images and AC susceptibility of aliquots samples sequentially taken from the reaction solution, respectively. The thermal decomposition of two OL-chain from $Fe(OL)_3$ produced the Fe-OL monomer, which were contributed to the formation of iron oxide nanoparticles. In the initial stage of nanoparticles formation, the small iron oxide nanoparticles had ${\gamma}-Fe_2O_3$ structure. However, as the iron oxide nanoparticles were rapidly growth, the iron oxide nanoparticles showed ${\gamma}-Fe_2O_3$-FeO core-shell structure which the FeO layer was formed on the surface of ${\gamma}-Fe_2O_3$ nanoparticles by insufficient oxygen supply from the reaction solution. These nanoparticles were transformed to $Fe_3O_4$ structure by oxidation during long aging time at high temperature. Finally, the $Fe_3O_4$ nanoparticles with high saturation magnetization and stable in the air could be easily synthesized by the thermal decomposition method.
