Synthesis of Fe­Garnet for tile Immobilization of High Level Radioactive Waste (고준위 방사성폐기물의 고정화를 위한 Fe­석류석 합성 연구)

  • Garnet has been considered as a possible matrix for the immobilization of radioactive actinides. It is expected that Fe­based garnet be able to have the high substitution ability of actinide elements because ionic radius of Fe in tetrahedral site is larger than that of Si of Si­based garnet. Accordingly, we synthesized Fe­garnet with the batch composition of $Ca_{2,5}$C $e_{0.5}$Z $r_2$F $e_3$ $O_{12}$ and $Ca_2$CeZrFeF $e_3$ $O_{12}$ and studied their phase relations and properties. Mixed samples were fabricated in pellet forms under the pressure of 400 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and were sintered in the temperature range of 1100∼140$0^{\circ}C$ in atmospheric conditions. Phase identification and chemical composition of synthesized samples were analyzed by XRD and SEM/EDS. In results, where the compounds were sintered at 130$0^{\circ}C$, we optimally obtained Fe­garnets as the main phase, even though some minor phases like perovskite were included. The compositions of Fe­garnets synthesized from the batch compositions of $Ca_{2,5}$C $e_{0.5}$Z $r_2$F $e_3$ $O_{12}$ and $Ca_2$CeZrFeF $e_3$ $O_{12}$, are $Ca_{2.5­3.2}$C $e_{0.3­0.7}$Z $r_{1.8­2.8}$F $e_{1.9­3.2}$ $O_{12}$ and $Ca_{2.2­2.5}$C $e_{0.8­1.0}$Z $r_{1.3­1.6}$ F $e_{0.4­.07}$ F $e_{3­3.2}$ $O_{12}$, respectively. Ca contents were exceeded and Ce contents were exceeded or depleted in 8­coodinated site, comparing to the initial batch composition. These results were caused by the compensation of the difference of ionic radius between Ca and Ce.

Microstructure and Wear Properties in an Engine Oil Environment of Extruded Hyper-eutectic Al-15wt.%Si Alloy and Gray Cast Iron (과공정 Al-15wt.%Si 압출재와 회주철의 미세조직 및 엔진 오일 환경에서의 마모 특성)

  • This study investigated the microstructure and wear properties of extruded hyper-eutectic Al-Si (15wt.%) alloy in an engine oil environment. The wear mechanism of the material was also analyzed and compared to conventional gray cast iron. In microstructural observation results of Al-15wt.%Si alloy, primary Si phase ($45.3{\mu}m$) and eutectic Si phase ($3.1{\mu}m$) were found in the matrix, and the precipitations of $Mg_2Si({\beta}^{\prime})$, $Al_2Cu({\theta}^{\prime})$ and $Al_6(Mn,Fe)$ were also detected. In the case of gray cast iron, ferrite and pearlite were observed. It was also observed that flake graphite ($20-130{\mu}m$) were randomly distributed. Wear rates were lower in the Al-Si alloy as compared to those of gray cast iron in all load conditions, confirming the outstanding wear resistance of Al-15wt.%Si alloy in engine oil environment. In the $4kg_f$ condition, the wear rate of gray cast iron was $6.0{\times}10^{-5}$ and that of Al-Si measured $0.8{\times}10^{-5}$. The microstructures after wear of the two materials were analyzed using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). The primary Si and eutectic Si of Al-Si alloy effectively mitigated the abrasive wear, and the Al matrix effectively endured to accept a significant amount of plastic deformation caused by wear.

Effect of Ag on microstructural behaviour of Nanocrystalline $Fe_{87-x}Zr_7B_6Ag_x$($0{\leq}x_{Ag}{\leq}4$) Magnetic Thin Films Materials

  • Effect of Ag additive element on microstructure of $Fe_{87-x}Zr_7B_6Ag_x$, magnetic thin films on Si(001) substrates has been investigated using Transmission Electron Microscopy(TEM) and X-ray Diffraction(XRD). All samples with additive Ag element were made by DC-sputtering and subjected to annealing treatments of $300^{\circ}C{\siim}600^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr. TEM and XRD showed that perfectly amorphous state in Ag-free Fe-based films was observed in as-deposited condition. The as-deposited Fe-based films with the presence of Ag constituent have a mixture of Fe-based amorphous and nano-sized Ag crystalline phases. In this case, additive element, Ag was soluted into Fe-based matrix. With the increase in additive element, Ag, insoluble nano-crystalline Ag particles were dispersed in the Fe-based amorphous matrix. Crystallization of Fe-based amorphous phase in the matrix of $Fe_{82}Zr_7B_6Ag_5$ thin films occurred at an annealing temperature of $400^{\circ}C$. Upon annealing, the amorphous-Ag crystalline state of Fe-Zr-B-Ag films was transformed into the mixture of Ag crystalline phase + Fe-based amorphous phase + ${\alpha}$-Fe cluster followed by the crystallization process of ${\alpha}$-Fe nanocrystalline + Ag crystalline phases.

Composite and Spark Plasma Sintering of the Atomized Fe Amorphous Powders and Wire-exploded Cu Nanopowder in Liquid (가스분무 Fe계 비정질 분말과 유체 내 전기선 폭발에 의한 나노 Cu 분말의 복합화와 방전플라즈마 소결)

  • Fe based ($Fe_{68.2}C_{5.9}Si_{3.5}B_{6.7}P_{9.6}Cr_{2.1}Mo_{2.0}Al_{2.0}$) amorphous powder were produced by a gas atomization process, and then ductile Cu powder fabricated by the electric explosion of wire(EEW) were mixed in the liquid (methanol) consecutively. The Fe-based amorphous - nanometallic Cu composite powders were compacted by a spark plasma sintering (SPS) processes. The nano-sized Cu powders of ${\sim}\;nm$200 produced by EEW in the methanol were mixed and well coated with the atomized Fe amorphous powders through the simple drying process on the hot plate. The relative density of the compacts obtained by the SPS showed over 98% and its hardness was also found to reach over 1100 Hv.

Geochemical Exploration Technics in the Pungchon Limestone Area (풍촌 석회암지대 탐사에 적용될 새 지화학탐사법 연구)

  • Most of significant ore deposits in South Korea such as the Sangdong W - Mo, the Yeonhwa Pb-Zn and the Geodo Cu-Fe skarn ore deposits occur at the southern limb of the Hambaeg syncline in the Taebaeg Basin. The mineralization took place in the interbedded limestone of the Myobong Formation and the Pungchon limestone of the Great Limestone Group of the Cambrian age, generally striking E-W and dipping 25-30 degrees north. There are no outcrops of the skarn-type orebody at the northern limb of the syncline. In order to find a clue of a possible hidden orebody localized at the limestones in the northern limb, a lithogeochemical exploration by using carbon isotope and some elements such as Si, Ca, Fe and Al at the Sangdong Mine area has been attempted as for a modelling study. For this study, 45 samples from the Pungchon limestone which do not show any megascopic indication of mineralization have been taken in both the mineralized zone and the unminerallized zone at the Sangdong Mine area. Analytical data show that there are big differences in the contents of CaO and $Al_2O_3$ between the Pungchon limestone of the mineralized zone and that of the unmineralized zone. Carbon isotope data exhibit that ${\delta}^{13}C$ values of the Pungchon limestone in the mineralized zone are highter than those in the unmineralized zone. The difference in the analytical values of CaO, $Al_2O_3$ and the carbon isotope between the mineralized and the unmineralized zones is as follows ; Unminerallized zone Mineralized zone CaO 51.3% 43.5% $Al_2O_3$ 0.6% 2.4% ${\delta}^{13}C$ -0.39 permil -0.56 permil $Fe_2O_3$ 0.9% 1.4% $SiO_2$ 3.0% 2.4% The decrease in the Si content of the Pungchon limestone in the mineralized zone is contrary to the result of the previous study (Moon, 1987). On the basis of identification of the increase in the Al content of the limestone in the mineralized zone, it could be deduced that the decrease in the Si content of the Pungchon limestone might be due to the result of increase in the alteration products mainly occurred along fracture-system such as joint cracks or minor faults and that the phenomena shown by the Si and Al content in the mineralized zone might be derived from the thermal effect of granite extended mineralizing activity to the overlied limestone on the surface. Higher mean values of Fe and Al as well as lower mean values of carbon content and the ${\delta}^{13}C$ than mean values of those in the Pungchon limestone at the northern limb of the Hambaeg Syncline may be applicable in exploration for blind orebodies.

  • We smelted thc pellets made by mixing the distilled carbon from wlISte Lires, LD converter dust and slag with reduction process in the revcrberatory furnace. Thc obtained results are as follows 1) The removal mte of zinc appears above 97% after T reducing the pellets at $1300^{\circ}C$ for Ihr and the zinc content in the residue are 0.1~D.2%. 2) Under the mixing condition of 500 g LD dust. 150-200 g LD slag and 30-50 g distilled carbon of waste lires the removal raho of zinc shows above 95%, while t the 50-60% Fe remains in the residue. 3) After smelting at $1350^{\circ}C$ for 3hrs, the recovery ratio of pig iron reduced from lhe p pellets containing 15-20% LD slag and 4.1-7.2% distilled carbon of waste tires appears in the range of 89.3-92%. 4) Tbe c chemical composition of the recovered pig iron is 1.7%C, O.05%P, 0.05%S and balance Fe. 5) Tbe recovered dust from the d dust collcctor alter finishing the reduction rcaction appears as a crude zinc oxide conLaining 60% zinc.

  • Fe based (Fe$_{68.2}$C$_{5.9}$Si$_{3.5}$B$_{6.7}$P$_{9.6}$Cr$_{2.1}$Mo$_{2.0}$Al$_{2.0}$) amorphous powder, which is a composition of iron blast cast slag, were produced by a gas atomization process, and sequently mixed with ductile Cu powder by a mechanical ball milling process. The experiment results show that the as-prepared Fe amorphous powders less than 90 $\mu$m in size has a fully amorphous phase and its weight fraction was about 73.7%. The as-atomized amorphous Fe powders had a complete spherical shape with very clean surface. Differential scanning calorimetric results of the as-atomized Fe powders less than 90 $\mu$m showed that the glass transition, T$_g$, onset crystallization, T$_x$, and super-cooled liquid range $\Delta$T=T$_x$-T$_g$ were 512, 548 and 36$^{\circ}C$, respectively. Fe amorphous powders were mixed and deformed well with 10 wt.% Cu by using AGO-2 high energy ball mill under 500 rpm.

Densification of the Fe amorphous-Cu composited powders by spark plasma sintering of was occurred through a plastic deformation of the each amorphous powder and Cu phase. The SPS samples milled by AGO-2 under 500 rpm had the best homogeneity of Cu phase and showed the smallest Cu pool size. Micro-Vickers hardness of the as-SPSed specimens was changed with the milling processes.

A Study of Neolithic era Plain Coarse Pottery of Cheju Island by Mossbauer Spectroscopy (제주도 신석기 토기에 대한 Mossbauer 연구)

  • This study aims at making a research into the physical and chemical properties of the neolithic era potterys, which are unearthed from Gosanli, Sagaeli, Bukchonli, Samyangdong and Gonaili districts in Cheju Island, by using X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence spectrometer and Mossbauer spectroscopy. This results are as follows. The principal component of five plain coarse pottery sherds by X-ray fluorescence spectrometer and X-ray diffraction spectrum at the room temperature is silicate mineral which is equal to SiO$_2$, and they also have a little magetite, hematite and goethite. The most existent Fe is Fe$\^$+3/ through Mossbauer spectroscopy analysis of plain coarse pottery sherds and it is presumed that the magnetic hyperfine splitting caused this result. The ratio of Fe$\^$2+//(Fe$\^$2+/+Fe$\^$3+/) is mostly zero by Mossbauer spectrum at the room temperature of plain coarse pottery sherds and it is thought because they were fired in the atmosphere.

Analysis of the Effects of Ti, Si, and Mo on the Resistance to Corrosion and Oxidation of Fe-18Cr Stainless Steels by Response Surface Methodology (반응표면분석법을 활용한 Fe-18Cr 스테인리스강의 부식 및 산화 저항성에 미치는 Ti, Si, Mo의 영향 분석)

  • We studied the corrosion and oxidation properties of Fe-18Cr-0.4Nb-(0.1~0.6)Ti-(1~3)Si-(0.5~2)Mo stainless steel. The resistance to general and pitting corrosion was evaluated and the results were analyzed by Response Surface Methodology (RSM) as a function of alloy composition. The effects of alloy composition and heat treatment on the oxidation resistance were also examined. Mo increased both general corrosion resistance and pitting corrosion resistance. Si improved the resistance of the alloys to pitting corrosion. Si was also beneficial for general corrosion resistance of the alloys containing Mo at more than 1 wt.%. However, Mo was detrimental when its content was lower. Effects of Ti on general corrosion properties appeared to be weak and a high concentration of Ti appeared to deteriorate pitting resistance. The thickness of the oxidation scale increased and adhesion of the scale worsened as the temperature increased from $800^{\circ}C$ to $900^{\circ}C$. Weight gain of the alloys due to oxidation at $900^{\circ}C$ clearly showed that the resistance to oxidation is improved by annealing at $860^{\circ}C$ and an increase of Si content.
