  • 2,2¢-Dihydroxyazobenzene (DHAB) was attached to poly(ethylenimine) (PEI) to obtain DHAB-PEI. Spectral titration revealed that uranyl, Fe(III), Cu(II), and Zn(II) ion form 1 : 1-type complexes with DHAB attached to PEI. Formation constants for the metal complexes formed by the DHAB moieties of DHAB-PEI were mea-sured by using various competing ligands. The results indicated thatthe concentrations of uranyl, Fe(III), and Cu(II) ions can be reduced to 10 -16 -10 -23 M at p 8 with DHAB-PEI when the concentration of the DHAB moiety is 1 residue M. By using cyanuric chloride as the coupling reagent, DHAB-PEI was immobilized on Sephadex G-25 resin to obtain DHAB-PEI-Seph. Binding of uranyl,Fe(III), Cu(II), and Zn(II) ion by DHAB-PEI-Seph was characterized by using competing ligands. A new method has been developed for characteriza-tion of metal sequestering ability of a chelating resin. Formation constants and metal-binding capacity of two sets of binding sites on the resin were estimated for each metal ion. DHAB-PI-Seph was applied to recovery of metals such as uranium,Fe, Cu, Zn, Pb, V, Mn, and W from seawater. The uranium recovery from seawaterby DHAB-PEI-Seph does not meet the criterion for economical feasibility partlydue to interference by Fe and Zn ions. The seawater used in the experiment was contaminated by Fe and Zn and, therefore, the efficiency of uranium extractionfrom seawater with DHAB-PEI-Seph could be improved if the experiment is carried out in a cleaner sea.

  • For the separation of neodymium from NdFeB permanent magnet scrap, the scrap was roasted for oxidizing, and leached with acetic acid followed by fractional crystallization for selective separation. From the analysis results of the leached solution, the optimum condition for the recovery of neodymium was found that leaching temperature, leaching time and pulp density are 80$^{\circ}C$, 3 hours, and 35%, respectively. At this optimum condition, more than 90% of neodymium could be recovered. Concentration of neodymium acetate in acetic acid. The optimum condition for the recovery of neodymium acetate crystal from the leached solution was that the initial leaching solution was evaporated until the remaining volume was about 1/5 of the initial volume. At this condition, 67.5% of neodymium was recovered from the leached solution. The neodymium remaining in the concentrated solution was recovered by reacting it with oxalic acid.

  • This study aims to improve the recovery of gold and silver by removing hematite from gold ore of an oxidation zone with ammonia solution. Quartz, hematite and muscovite were present in the oxidation zone, while hematite was hydrogenous. As a result of performing an ammonia leaching test on variables, it is found that the maximum Fe leaching parameter was $-45{\mu}m$ particle size, 1.0 M sulfuric acid concentration, 5.0 g/l ammonium sulfate concentration and 2.0 M hydrogen peroxide concentration. It is also confirmed that goethite was precipitated and formed from that ammonia elution. As the amount of Fe-removal was increased in a solid-residue, the recovery of Au and Ag were increased, too.

  • This work describes highly efficient recovery and selective leaching of Zn from electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) with different physicochemical properties, induced by acid leaching at ambient conditions. The chemical compositions, mineralogical phases, and particle sizes of the EAFDs were analyzed and compared. The effects of leaching time, liquid/solid ratio, acid type, and acid concentration on the selective leaching of Zn were also studied. The EAFD with high Fe/Zn ratio (> 1, EAFD3) was richer in ZnFe2O4 and exhibited larger particle size than samples with low Fe/Zn ratio (< 1, EAFD1,2). ANOVA analysis revealed that the Fe/Zn ratios of the EAFDs also have a significant effect on Zn extraction (p < 0.005). Selective leaching of Zn with minimum Fe dissolution was obtained at pH > 4.5, regardless of other parameters or sample properties. The maximum Zn extraction rate obtained by the pH control was over 97% for EAFD1 and EAFD2, 76% for EAFD3, and 80% for EAFD4. The present results confirm that the Fe/Zn ratio can be used to identify EAFDs that permits facile and high-yield Zn recovery, and pH can be used as a process control factor for selective leaching of Zn regardless of any differences in the properties of the EAFD sample.

  • Lab scale simulated steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) process devices were used to investigate the effect of inorganic additives for the bitumen recovery from oil sand. An extra heavy oil similar with bitumen and 1.5 mm diameter of the glass bead instead of clay was mixed to simulate the oil sand. In addition, $FeO_X$ synthesized from the inorganic process was introduced as an inorganic additive for improving the recovery. Finally, the steam heat transfer rate of approximately 40% following the introduction of inorganic additives which also increased the recovery rate by about 30%.

  • The HDDR characteristics of the Nd-Fe-B-type isotropic and anisotropic HDDR alloys were investigated using three types of alloys: alloy A $(Nd_{12.6}Fe_{81.4}B_6), alloy B (Nd_{12.6}Fe_{81.3}B_6Zr_{0.1}), and alloy C (Nd_{12.6}Fe_{68.8}Co_{11.5}B_6Ga_{1.0}Zr_{0.1}$). The alloy A is featured with the isotropic HDDR character, while alloy B and C are featured with the anisotropic HDDR character. Hydrogenation and disproportionation characteristics of the alloys were examined using DTA under hydrogen gas. Recombination characteristics of the alloys were examined by observing the coercivity variation as a function of recombination time. The present study revealed that the alloy C exhibits slightly higher hydrogenation and disproportionation temperatures compared to the alloy A and B. Recombination of the anisotropic alloy B and C takes place more rapidly with respect to the isotropic alloy A. The intrinsic coercivities of the recombined materials rapidly increased with increasing the recombination time and then showed a peak, after which the coercivities decreased gradually. The degraded coercivity was, however, recovered significantly on prolonged recombination treatment. Compared with the isotropic HDDR alloy A the anisotropic HDDR alloy B and C are notable for their greater recovery of coercivity. The significant recovery of coercivity was accounted for the in terms of the development of well-defined smooth grain boundary between the recombined grains on prolonged recombination.

  • The recovery of valuable metals from waste lithium-based secondary batteries is very important in terms of efficiently utilizing earth's limited number of resources. Currently, the cathode material of a LiFePO4 battery, a type of battery which is widely used in automobiles, contains approximately 5% lithium. After use, the lithium in these batteries can be used again as a raw material for new batteries through lithium recycling. In this study, low-concentration sulfuric acid, a commonly used type of inorganic acid, was used to selectively leach the lithium contained in a waste LiFePO4 cathode material powder. In addition, in order to compare and analyze the leaching efficiency and separation efficiency of each component, the optimalleaching conditions were derived by applying a two-step leaching process with pulp density being used as a variable during leaching. When leaching with pulp density as a variable, it was confirmed that at a pulp density of 200 g/L, the separation efficiency was approximately 200 times higher than at other pulp densities because the iron and phosphorus components were hardly leached at this pulp density. Accordingly, the pulp density of 200 g/L was used tooptimize the leaching conditions for the selective leaching and recovery of lithium.

  • Mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) containing MIL-100(Fe), a MOF type, were fabricated in this study. MMMs up to 30 wt% MOF loading were prepared, and their gas permeabilities were tested. $H_2$, $CO_2$, $O_2$, $N_2$, and $CH_4$ gas permeabilities increased with the MOF loading, while $SF_6$, the largest kinetic diameter in this study, exhibited reduction of gas permeability with the loading. Ideal gas selectivity of $N_2/SF_6$ improved by 40% as compared with pure polyimide membrane, suggesting the proposed MMMs were suitable for $N_2/SF_6$ separation.

  • Alcaligenes eutrophus was successfully recovered from high cell density broth by pre-treatment with Fe-based coagulants. An inorganic coagulant, Fe$_2$(SO$_4$)$_3$, and a polymerized coagulant, Ferix-3, were used. Good coagulation was observed in broad pH range of 3 to 13, the floe size was increased with increasing pH of culture broth. The optimum pH of fermentation broth for cell recovery was 10 to 13. The optimum coagulant dosages to recover cells with 95% cell recovery were increased with increasing cell concentration. Optimal coagulant dosage was lower when the polymerized coagulant was used rather than the inorganic coagulant. The coexistence of NH$_4$$\^$+/ was increased coagulant requirement, and the coagulant requirement was 0.066g Fe$_3$$\^$+//g NH$_4$$\^$+/.

  • The red mud generated from bauxite during the Bayer alumina production process has been regarded as an industrial waste due to the high alkaline property and high content of Na. Despite of its environmental problem, various studies for recovery of the valuable resources from red mud has been also carried out because of high content (25.7 wt.% as Fe2O3 in this study) of iron in red mud. In order to recover the iron resource in the red mud, microwave heating experiments were performed with adding of activated carbon and elemental sulfur to the red mud. Through the microwave heating the powdered red mud mixtures converted to porous and vitrified solid aggregates. The vitrified aggregates produced by microwave heating are composed of goethite, zero valent iron (Fe0), pyrrhotite and pyrite. And then, the microwave heating samples were dissolved in the aqua regia solution, and Fe precipitates were obtained as a Fe-chlorides by adding of NaCl salt in the aqua regia solution. The Fe recovery rates in the Fe-chloride precipitates showed differences depending on the experimental mixture conditions, and Fe grades of the end products are 49.0 wt.%, 58.0 wt.% and 59.5 wt.% under mixture conditions of red mud, red mud + activated carbon, and red mud + activated carbon + elemental S, respectively. The Fe content of 56.0 wt.% is generally known as the grade value of Fe in a iron ore for iron production, and the Fe grades of microwave heating samples with adding activated carbon and elemental S in this study are higher than the grade value of 56.0 wt.%.
