  • The majority of Turkey's geography is at risk of earthquakes. Within the borders of Turkey, including the two major active faults contain the North-Eastern and Eastern Anatolia, earthquake, threatening the safety of life and property. On January 24, 2020, an earthquake of magnitude 6.8 occurred at 8:55 p.m. local time. According to the data obtained from the stations in the region, peak ground acceleration in the east-west direction was measured as 0.292 g from the 2308 coded station in Sivrice. It is thought that the earthquake with a magnitude of Mw 6.8 was developed on the Sivrice-Puturge segment of the Eastern Anatolian Fault, which is a left lateral strike slip fault, and the tear developed in an area of 50-55 km. Aftershocks ranging from 0.8 to 5.1 Mw occurred following the main shock on the Eastern Anatolian Fault. The earthquake caused severe structural damages in Elazığ and neighboring provinces. As a result of the field investigations carried out in this study, significant damage levels were observed in the buildings since it did not meet the criteria in the earthquake codes. Within the study's scope, the structural damage cases in reinforced concrete and masonry structures were investigated. Many structural deficiencies and mistakes such as non-ductile details, poor concrete quality, short columns, strong beams-weak columns mechanism, large and heavy overhangs, masonry building damages and inadequate reinforcement arrangements were observed. Requirements of seismic codes are discussed and compared with observed earthquake damage.

  • Located in the eastern part of the Anti-Atlas, the Tafilalet region shows numerous dykes and sills that crosscut the Paleozoic terrains. The magmatic structures (dykes and sills) of the Tadaout-Tizi n'Rsas (TTR) anticline is studied here, it located neighboring the main branch of the Anti-Atlas Major Fault (AAMF), known in this location as the Oumejrane-Taouz Fault (OJTF). The N20° to N60° trending dykes crosscut the Paleozoic formations (Ordovician to Devonian), whereas sills are injected into the Silurian and Devonian ones. The dyke swarms of TTR have been studied using the Anisotropy of Magnetic Susceptibility (AMS), petrographic study and structural analyses. The petrographic study of the TTR doleritic dykes shows a dominance of plagioclase feldspars, alkali feldspars, amphiboles, pyroxenes and biotite. The dykes contain also mesotype (natrolite), sphene (titanite), apatite, actinolite and pegmatitic enclaves of biotite, orthoclase feldspars and pelites. Concerning field works, they show the deformation of TTR dykes by the Variscan tectonics events, it is marked by the presence of displacements (strike-slip faults) and cleavages. The Magnetic Susceptibility (MS) measured on magmatic specimens show the dominance of ferromagnetic and paramagnetic minerals. The high values of MS in the dykes are due to the presence of hematite, amphibole, pyroxene and biotite. In addition their magnetic fabric, determined by our AMS study, allows us to reconstitute the tectonic event which affected the magmatic bodies. This one is characterized by a magnetic foliation and a NNW-trending lineation that reflect the Variscan shortening orientation.

  • Cheju Island was formed by volcanic activity probably related to the inferred geodynamics in the early Quaternary times. Paleostress analysis, in spite of a few fault slip data collected near Sanbangsan trachyte dome (dated 0.87 Ma) represents an extentional tectonic event with the direction ENE-WSW. Joint anayses in the vicinity of Seahwa reveal three extensional tectonic events of directions NW-SE, NE-SW and ENE-WSW. Especially the extensional event with the direction ENE-WSW affected the whole Cheju area during the most recent time.

  • Now a days, the induction motor is widely used in industry automation. Without monitoring the motor fault, maintenance cost is increased undesirably high. The slip frequency is included in the feature frequency, so rotating rotor speed is needed. In this paper, a sensorless motor speed estimation method, rotor slot harmonic(RSH) method is suggested and a solution of rotor bar diagnosis is proposed for motor running with light-load. When the rotor is rotating, it shows the harmonic signal of back-emf voltage related with number of rotor slot. So from the power spectrum of current signal, we can find the rotor speed.

  • Aluminum sheet application to automobile body panels has now become an important objective to meet the requirements of automobile weight reduction. As the Mg content in Al-Mg based alloys increased up to 7.19%, the strength and elongation increased. For instance. Al-7.19Mg alloy had a high strength of 305MPa and a high elongation of 35%. A study was also made to investigate the interrelation between grain size and tensile properties with varying the contents of Mg, Ti and Zr elements and annealing conditions. The yield stress decreased as the grain size increased, which increased the uniform elongation. The strain hardening exponents n increased as the Mg content increased, which depended on the increasing difficulties of the cross slip of dislocation.

  • Recently, as the feasibility study shows that trans-Korea railway and trans-continental railway are advantageous, interest in high-speed railway system is increasing. Because railway vehicle is environment-friendly and safe compared with airplane and ship, its market-sharing increases gradually. We developed a measurement system for on-line test and evaluation of performances of KHST. The measurement system is composed of software part and hardware part. Perfect interface between multi-users is possible. Nowadays, position data inputs to pulse signal from wheel. Perfect position measurement was limited to slip and slide of vehicle. This measurement makes up for the weak points, Position Detection System using GPS develops. By using the system, Korean High Speed Train is capable of accurate fault position detection.

  • Slope failures can be occurred by complex mechanism. In this cases, failures shows characteristics of complex failure mechanism during progressive mass movements. A case is a merged large slide with two sliding events triggered by slip on fault plane. Another case shows extension of failure area by sliding or subsidence at backyards of toppling areas. Generally, areas of progressive failures have wider than them of simple events.

  • Reactive power support is considered to be necessary for dealing with a voltage stability issue with wind turbine system employing squirrel-cage induction generator(SCIG). This paper analyses steady-state characteristics of the SCIG wind turbine system by simulating torque-slip characteristics of SCIG with respect to variations of interconnecting network strength and generator terminal voltage. It also presents dynamics analysis of SCIG wind turbine system on Simulink to investigate the impact of static var compensator(SVC) and static synchronous compensator(STATCOM) on transient stability enhancement. It analysed transient stability with varying fault duration times and compared the transient stability characteristics with varying rated capacities of SVC and STATCOM. It is shown that the STATCOM has a better performance and reactive power support compared to SVC.

  • We have developed a new measurement system by using GPS to complement those errors. In general, GPS receivers are composed of an antenna, tuned to the frequencies transmitted by the satellites, receiver-processors, and a highly-stable clock. The GPS mounted on the roof of TT4 in KHST receives a signal from the RS232 communication port, and it is connected to the network system in TT3 after converting with TCPIP communication. It is able to track the position of vehicle and synchronize the signal from different measurement system simultaneously. Therefore it is able to chase the fault occurrence, track inspection and electrical interruptionat real-time situation more accurately. There is not an error coursed by vehicle conditions such as slip and the slide.

  • The focal mechanisms of the earthquakes occurred in 2001 and 2002 are analyzed to understand the regional stress and tectonics in and around Korean Peninsula. The forty -three fault plane solutions are derived using the polarities of first arrival P-waves recorded at KIGAM, Bmh and KEPRI stations. The result suggest that thrust motion with significant amount of strike slip component is dominant mode of faulting. The larger population of mechanism is characterized by WNW-ESE striking nodal planes. NE-SW direction is interpreted as dominant compressional axis orientation of stress field. These solutions are similar to those of medium size earthquakes studied previously, which is known as typical regional tectonic stress orientation in and around Korean Peninsula.
