  • Objectives: Exposure to light at night has become pervasive in modern society. The impact of dim artificial light at night (dALAN) exposure on sleep and fatigue is not well recognized. We aim to study the impact of dALAN exposure during sleep on human fatigue. Methods: 30 healthy young male volunteers from 21 to 29 years old were enrolled in the study. They were randomly divided into two groups depending on light intensity (Group A : 5 lux and Group B : 10 lux). Data were gathered from each participant after each night with no light (Night 1) followed by the next night (Night 2) with two different dim light conditions (5 or 10 lux) by means of self-reported fatigue scale. Results: Exposure to dALAN during sleep was significantly associated with increased overall fatigue (F = 19.556, p < 0.001) and ocular discomfort (F = 5.671, p = 0.028). Conclusion: We found that dALAN during sleep likely affects human fatigue in some aspects. These findings indicate that dALAN during sleep exerts a negative effect on human fatigue.

  • This article is to examine the influence of occupational stress, socio-psychological factors and quality of sleep on fatigue symptoms from firefighters in fire service. The correlation coefficients were obtained by a tool of Pearson analysis, and covariance structure analysis was performed on the factors affecting the level of fatigue symptoms. This result suggests that the level of firefighters' fatigue symptoms in fire service. has a causal effect with occupational stress, socio-psychological factors and quality of sleep. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the work environment and to increase organizational support to deal with firefighters' fatigue in fire service.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of laughter therapy on depression, anxiety, fatigue, and quality of sleep in gastrointestinal cancer survivors. Methods: This study was a randomized controlled trial. We compared the effect of laughter therapy with usual care only in post chemotherapy gastrointestinal patients. Outcomes included changes in depression and anxiety (according to the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale), fatigue (according to the Fatigue Severity Scale), and quality of sleep (according to the Verran & Synder-Halpern Sleep Scale). Data was collected July 2015 through January 2016. Seventy nine participants who agreed to participate in this study were randomized to either the experimental group (n= 40) or the control group (n= 39). Therapy included eight sessions (60 minutes each, once weekly). Data were analyzed using the Windows SPSS 22.0 program. Results: Laughter therapy was effective in reducing fatigue (p= .019) and increasing satisfaction of sleep (p= .030). There were no differences between the groups after therapy for depression (p= .129) and anxiety (p= .200). Conclusion: Results of this study indicate that laughter therapy may be an effective nursing intervention for improving the health status of gastrointestinal cancer survivors after chemotherapy.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the influencing factors on postpartum fatigue in the parturient women. Methods: The data were collected from July to September, 2006 using self-report questionnaires. The sample was 143 healthy parturient women who visited the outpatient clinic at 2 hospitals for a routine follow up after childbirth. The data were analyzed by using SPSS 12.0 Win program. Results: There were significant differences in the postpartum fatigue by age, religion, sleep hour, and complaint of perceived health problem. The postpartum fatigue were significantly correlated with infant care stress(p<0.001), sleep satisfaction(p<0.001), and feeding difficulty(p=0.016). The multiple regression analysis showed that the postpartum fatigue were significantly predicted by the infant care stress, sleep satisfaction and complaint of perceived health problem. These variables explained 31.8% of the variance of postpartum fatigue. The infant care stress was the main predictor of postpartum fatigue. Conclusions: It could be concluded that the nursing intervention for reducing the infant care stress should be developed to manage the postpartum fatigue for parturient women. Prospective studies are needed to be conducted to verify the causal relationship between infant care stress and postpartum fatigue.

  • Purpose: The purpose this research was to provide with basic data in the control of the fatiguer found in the patients with fibromyalgia by analysing the factors that predict that. Method: At three university medical center, appointed 245 out-patients diagnosed of fibromyalgia according to the conditions by American College of Rheumatology (1990). The research instruments used in this study were graphic rating scale(Anxiety, sleep disturbance, pain, joint stiffness and depression), physical activity, the number of tender points, life satisfaction and Self-efficacy scale. In data analysis, SPSS 12.0 program was utilized and data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficient and multiple regression. Result: The factors that predict the fatigue of patients with fibromyalgia were sleep disturbance, life satisfaction, pain, joint stiffness, illness duration, and anxiety which explained 50.1% of the fatigue. Conclusion: It has been confirmed that the regression equation model of this research may serve as a fatigue prediction factors in patients with fibromyalgia.

The patients selected were received an aroma inhalation therapy via nebulizer with a 2% diluted oil mixture of eucalyptus and peppermint with 10 cc of saline solution in the ratio of 1:1 ones a day for 15 min in the period of 2 weeks. The data were analyzed for the descriptive statistics and paired t-test. Results: There was a statistically significant improvement on physical and psychological symptoms of fatigue and sleep with a increase in systolic blood pressure. Conclusion: Eucalyptus and peppermint blended oil aromatherapy as a sleep induction modality is an effective nursing and therapeutic intervention in conjunction with acupuncture and herbal medicine for symptoms of nasal congestion. However, further well designed research is required in evaluating the effectiveness of the types of clinically available essential oil.

  • This study is a descriptive research study to identify the relationship between cancer fatigue, quality of sleep, environmental sleep disturbance, and comfort perceived by hospitalized cancer patients. Data were collected with structured questionnaires from 113 cancer patients from a university hospital in J city, Gyengnam, from September 17 to November 5, 2019, and analyzed using SPSS 21.0, using independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheffé test, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression. The subjects' Comfort is significantly different depending on education level, Cancerous type, Radiation treatment status, Usual exercise status. The result showed that comfort was negatively correlated with cancer fatigue(r=-.609, p<.001), quality of sleep(r=-.478, p<.001), and environmental sleep disturbance(r=-.297, p=.001). The variables that had a significant effect on comfort were cancer fatigue(β=-.42, p<.001), subjective quality of sleep(β=-.30, p=.001), and cancer type(β=-.18, p<.015), and the explanatory power was 46.1%(F=27.24, p<.001). Based on these results, it is necessary to develop a program to improve the quality of sleep and to reduce the cancer fatigue by cooperating with medical and nursing staff in multidisciplinary ways to enhance the comfort of hospitalized cancer patients.
