  • With an attempt to elucidating the lipid metabolism of Tsaiya ducks, thirty ducks at growing (8 weeks of age) and laying periods (10 weeks after the onset of laying) were examined, respectively. The ducks were randomly allocated into ad libitum feeding and 3-day fasting groups, to investigate their in vitro hepatocytes lipogenesis capacity and adipocytes lipolysis rate. Results indicate that (1) the capacity of hepatocytes incorporation of glucose and acetate into total lipid and metabolite of $^{14}CO_2$ production during the laying period was greater than during the growing period. Approximately 50% of the glucose or acetate converted into triacylglycerol (TG) by the hepatocytes were recovered as fatty acid during the growing period, while it was 65-70% during the laying period. (2) Acetate used for lipogenesis ability was superior to glucose in both periods. (3) The adipocytes lipolysis rate was increased significantly (p<0.05) by fasting. In contrast, the capacity of incorporated glucose or acetate into total lipid, triacylglycerol, fatty acid and glycerol by hepatocytes was reduced significantly (p<0.05) by fasting.

  • Gestational diabetes mellitus(GDM) is likely to develop type 2 diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome after delivery. Infants of diabetic women have higher incidence of congenital malformations than those of non-diabetic women. This study was performed to determine elevation factors associated with increased blood glucose in 350 pregnant women. Subjects were examined in June, 2011 to September, 2011 in Geongnam province. Fasting blood glucose, total cholesterol, triglyceride levels were measured by Olympus AU 680, and their body mass index (BMI) calculated. The mean total cholesterol levels were 223.22 mg/dL, triglyceride 188.38 mg/dL, and fasting blood glucose 100.18 mg/dL. Serum glucose level was significantly higher in the age group of 40 years($109.51{\pm}16.26mg/dL$) than 20 years and 30 years. And increase in triglyceride(>250 mg/dL) was significantly related to high blood glucose level($110.83{\pm}24.78mg/dL$), and increase in BMI(>26) was significantly related to high blood glucose level($114.03{\pm}27.09mg/dL$). However, cholesterol levels were not significantly related to high blood glucose level. In conclusion, the significant elevation factors in relation to the glucose levels were age, triglyceride, and BMI.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the depression and, the frequency of blood glucose testing in women type2 diabetic patients. Method: 114 Participants were recruited from the endocrinology outpatient department of a tertiary care hospital in an urban city. Depression was measured by visual analogue scale. Blood glucose testing was measured the frequency during past 1 week. Result: Depression was higher in hyperglycemia patient (fasting blood glucose$\geq$110mg/dl) than in normoglycemia patient(fasting blood glucose <110mg/dl). The blood glucose testing frequency as lower in 50-59 years old than in less than 39 years old. And it was lower in middle school graduate than in college graduate. The blood glucose testing was negatively correlated with patient's age. Conclusion: The depression program should be developed for hyperglycemia diabetic patients. And the blood glucose testing education program should be developed for aged and low educational level patients.

  • The purpose of this study was to establish an association between glycemic index (GI), glycemic load (GL), dietary carbohydrates and diabetes with the context of the current population dietary practice in Korea. The subjects of 3,389 adults (male 1,430, female 1,959) were divided into normal (serum fasting glucose < 100 mg/dL), impaired glucose tolerance (100 ${\leq}$ serum fasting glucose < 126 mg/dL), diabetes (serum fasting glucose > 126 mg/dL) by serum fasting glucose. Anthropometric and hematologic factors, and nutrient intakes, dietary glycemic index (DGI), dietary glycemic load (DGL) were assessed. Multiple logistic regression model was used to determine the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals for relationship of DGI, DGL, carbohydrates intakes, and diabetes. DGI and DGL were not significantly correlated with impaired glucose tolerance and diabetes. However, the risk of impaired glucose tolerance and diabetes showed a tendency to increase as increase of DGI after multivariate adjustment (age, education, income, region area, diabetes family history, smoking, drinking, exercise, energy intake) in male. The risk of impaired glucose tolerance and diabetes showed a tendency to increase in the DGI 71.1-74.8 after multivariate adjustment in female. DGL was inversely related to impaired glucose tolerance and diabetes in male. In female, however, DGL was positively related to impaired glucose tolerance and diabetes. In particular, the risk of diabetes increased positively in level of DGL 260.5, and remained after multivariate adjustment (Q5 vs Q1:2.38, 0.87-6.48). When percent energy intakes from carbohydrates were more than 70%, the risk of impaired glucose tolerance and diabetes increased in both male and female. In particular, when percent energy intakes from carbohydrates were more than 69.9%, the risk of diabetes increased positively in male (Q4 vs Q1:2.34, 1.16-4.17). In conclusion, above 70% energy intakes from carbohydrates appeared to be a risk factor of diabetes. It seemed that the meal with high GI and GL value must be avoided it. And also, the macronutrients of the meal must be properly balanced. In particular, it may be said that it is a preventive way for treatment of the diabetes to avoid eating carbohydrates of much quantity.

  • This article discusses the use of fasting blood glucose (FBG) and hemoglobin A1c (A1c) to identify insurance applicants who have diabetes or are at high risk for developing diabetes in the future. The conclusion is that the addition of A1c to insurers'underwriting requirements, either as a reflex or a routine (universal) test, may be a cost-effective strategy to manage the risk associated with impaired fasting glucose (IFG) and diabetes.

  • Metfotrmin is a biguanide antihyperglycemic agent often used for the treatment of non-insulin dependent diabetics(NIDDM). Metformin lowers both fasting and postprandial plasma glucose concentrations by improving insulin sensitivity at hepatic and peripheral tissues. The pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of metformin were studied in Korean healthy volunteers at fasting state over 10 hours. (omitted)

  • Cordyceps militaris, Artemisa capillaris, and Fagopyrum esculentum have been known to maintain normal blood sugar levels in folk medicine. We investigated the effects of these nutraceuticals extract supplementations on fasting and postprandial blood glucose in diabetes mellitus patients. The study population consisted of 50 diabetes subjects with a mean fasting blood glucose of 186.8${\pm}$6.2 mg/dl and postprandial blood glucose of 292.8${\pm}$10.3 mg/dl. They consumed 3 tea bags (3g per meal) of the extract of selected plants for 17 weeks. Patients treated with nutraceuticals extract supplementation showed a significant decrease of fasting blood glucose (118.4${\pm}$3.9 mg/dl) and postprandial blood glucose (160.5${\pm}$4.0 mg/dl) in 7 weeks. Nutraceticals extract supplemantation caused a significant decrease of 36.5% and 45% in fasting and postprandial blood glucose levels, respectively, and also significantly decreased HbA1c levels. This study shows that extract of nutraceuticals supplementation significantly lowered the fasting and postprandial blood glucose levels in NIDDM patients. These effects presumably contribute to the hypoglycemic activity.

  • Objectives: This study investigated the effects of the mixed herbal extract from Cinnamomum cassia Blume, Atractylodes macrocephala Koidzumi, Pueraria lobata Benth, and Aconitum carmichaeli Debx (CAPA) on obesity and glucose tolerance in obese mice. Methods: Animals were divided in 6 groups, normal diet, high fat diet (HFD), HFD with CAPA 100 mg/kg (CAPA 100), CAPA 300 mg/kg (CAPA 300), and metformin 200 mg/kg or lorcaserin 10 mg/kg as positive controls, and treated for 16 weeks. Body weight, food intake, fasting blood glucose, and body temperature were checked every week and then organs, blood serums were collected after treatment. The oral glucose tolerance test was also carried out after treatment. Results: Compared to HFD, CAPA extract treated mice showed significant decreases in body weight, adipose tissue weight, lipid accumulations in liver and serum lipid levels without a reduction of food intake. And fasting glucose and glucose tolerance were all improved in the CAPA treated mice. Conclusions: Our results suggest that CAPA extract can prevent diet induced obesity and glucose intolerance without a reduction of energy intake in obese mice.

  • Since diet is an essential component of the treatment for diabetic mellitus, a progressive educational plan was designed to educate diabetic children for the proper selection of their foods. Seven suspicious children were chosen according to the previous oral glucose tolerance test and present blood glucose levels (fasting and postprandial 2 hours). The education program includes the basic nutrition study, learning of the five basic food groups. familiarization with the food exchange lists. calorie calculation and menu planning, and follow-up evaluation by checking every day -food intake. The duration of the education was five weeks. The levels of fasting blood glucose and postprandial -2 hours blood sugar of the seven children were significantly reduced after the 5-weeks education:FBS:from 92-125mg% to 67-80mg%, pp-2hours BS: from 130-169mg% to 69-90mg%. The children have felt much better with profound self-confidence after to program . Their oral glucose tolerance test levels were also significantly decreased after the 5-weeks education in comparison with those of one year ago.

  • A meta-analysis of 63 randomized controlled trials of Pioglitazone and Rosiglitazone in patients with type 2 diabetes was conducted. Pioglitazone significantly lowered fasting plasma glucose and triglyceride (TG) level and increased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) level. Rosiglitazone significantly lowered hemoglobin A1C level and fasting plasma glucose, whereas it increased all kinds of lipids (HDL, LDL (low-density lipoprotein cholesterol), TG, total cholesterol). In comparison, glucose lowering effect was higher in Rosiglitazone, and Pioglitazone produced a more favorable lipid profile.
