  • Significant computations for full search (FS) motion estimation have been a big obstacle in real-time video coding and recent MPEG-4 AVC (advanced video coding) standard requires much more computations than conventional MPEG-2 for motion estimation. To reduce an amount of computation of full search (FS) algorithm for fast motion estimation, we propose a new and fast matching algorithm without any degradation of predicted images like the conventional FS. The computational reduction without any degradation in predicted image comes from fast elimination of impossible candidate motion vectors. We obtain faster elimination of inappropriate motion vectors using efficient matching units from localization of complex area in image data and dithering order based matching scan. Our algorithm reduces about $30\%$ of computations for block matching error compared with the conventional partial distortion elimination (PDE) algorithm, and our algorithm will be useful in real-time video coding applications using MPEG-4 AVC or MPEG-2.

  • In this paper, we efficiently implement the AMR speech coder by reducing the complexity of algebraic codebook search. To reduce the computational complexity of the algebraic codebook search, we propose a fast algebraic codebook search method that improves conventional depth first tree search method used in AMR speech coder algorithm. The proposed method reduces the search complexity by pruning the trees which are less possible to be selected as an optimum excitation. This method needs no additional computation for selecting the trees to be pruned and reduces the computational complexity considerably compared to the original depth first tree search method with slightly degradation or speech qualify. Applying our method to the implementation or AMR speech coder with 12.2 kbps mode by using the TeakLite DSP, we reduce the search complexity about 40% compared to the conventional method.

  • In general video coding systems, motion estimation (ME) is regarded as a vital component in a video coder as it consumes a large amount of computation resources. Fractional pixel motion estimation can improve the video compression rate at the cost of higher computational complexity. It is based on the experimental results that the sum of absolute differences (SAD) shows parabolic shape and thus can be approximated by using interpolation technique. In this paper, we propose a fast fractional pixel search algorithm by combining SASR (Simplified Adaptive Search Range) and the CBCDS (Center Biased Cross-Diamond Search) pattern with the predicted motion vector. Compare with the fractional pel full search and the CBFPS, the proposed CBCDS algorithms can reduce fractional pel search points up to 81.4%, respectively with the PSNR lost about 0.05dB.

  • This paper proposes the data reusable search scan methods for full search and fast search to implement low power Motion Estimation (ME). The proposed Optimized Sub-region Partitioning (OSP) method which divide search region into several sub-region can reduce the number of the required Reconfigurable Register Array (RRA) by half compared to the existing smart snake scan method for the same data reusability. In addition, the proposed Center Biased Search Scan method (CBSS) for various fast search algorithms can improve the data reusability. The performance comparisons show that the proposed search scan methods can reduce the average redundant data loading about 26.9% and 16.1% compared with the existing rater scan and snake scan methods, respectively. Due to the reduction of memory accesses, the proposed search scan methods are quite suitable for low power and high performance ME implementation.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient algorithm for computing architecture for high-performance Inter Prediction SAD HEVC encoder. HEVC Motion Estimation (ME) of the Inter Prediction is a process for searching for the currently high prediction block PU and the correlation in the interpolated reference picture in order to remove temporal redundancy. ME algorithm uses full search(FS) or fast search algorithm. Full search technique has the guaranteed optimal results but has many disadvantages which include high calculation and operational time due to the motion prediction with respect to all candidate blocks in a given search area. Therefore, this paper proposes a new algorithm which reduces the computational complexity by reusing the SAD operation in full search to reduce the amount of calculation and computational time of the Inter Prediction. The proposed algorithm is applied to an HEVC standard software HM16.12. There was an improved operational time of 61% compared to the traditional full search algorithm, BDBitrate was decreased by 11.81% and BDPSNR increased by about 0.5%.

  • The motion estimation which requires huge computation consumes large power in a video encoder. Although a number of fast-search algorithms are proposed to reduce the power consumption, the smaller the computation, the worse the performance they have. In this paper, we propose an architecture that a low energy management scheme can be applied with several fast-search algorithm. In addition. we show that ECVH, a software scheduling scheme which dynamically changes the search algorithm, the operating frequency, and the supply voltage using the remaining slack time within given power-budget, can be applied to the architecture, and show that the power consumption can be reduced.

  • We present a novel multi-resolution block matching algorithm (BMA) for fast motion estimation. At the coarsest level, a full search BMA (FSBMA) is performed for searching complex or random motion. Concurrently, spatial correlation of motion vector (MV) field is used for searching continuous motion. Here we present an efficient method for searching full resolution MVs without MV decimation even at the coarsest leve. After the coarsest level search, two or three initial MV candidates are chosen for the next level. At the further levels, the MV candidates are refined within much smaller search areas. Simulation results show that in comparison with FSBMA, the proposed BMA achieves a speed-up factor over 710 with minor PSNR degradation of 0.2dB at most, under a normal MPEG2 coding environment. Furthermore, our scheme is also suitable for hardware implementation due to regular data-flow.

  • Motion Estimation which is used to reduce the redundant data plays an important role in video compressions. However, it requires huge computational complexity of the encoder part. And therefore many fast motion estimation methods has been developed to reduce complexity. Multi-view video is obtained by using many cameras at different positions and its complexity increases in proportion to the number of cameras. In this paper, we proposed a fast motion estimation method for multi-view video. The proposed method predicts a search start point by using correlated candidate vectors of the current block. According to the motion size of the start search point, a search start pattern of the current block is decided adaptively. The proposed method proves to be about 2 ~ 5 times faster than existing methods while maintaining similar image quality and bitrates.

  • We propose a fast macroblock mode prediction and decision algorithm based on contextual information for Pslices in the H.264/AVC video standard, in which the mode prediction part is composed of intra and inter modes. There are nine $4{\times}4$ and four $16{\times}16$ modes in the intra mode prediction, and seven block types exist for the best coding gain based on rate-distortion optimization. This scheme gives rise to exhaustive computations (search) in the coding procedure. To overcome this problem, a fast inter mode prediction scheme is applied that uses contextual mode information for P-slices. We verify the performance of the proposed scheme through a comparative analysis of experimental results. The suggested mode search procedure increased more than 57% in speed compared to a full mode search and more than 20% compared to the other methods.
