CONTROL PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT OF AN EMV SYSTEM USING A PM/EM HYBRID ACTUATOR

  • In this study, we improved control performance of an EMV (electromechanical valve) system using a PM/EM (permanent magnet/electromagnet) hybrid EMA (electromagnetic actuator) and showed the feasibilities of both soft landing and fast transition of the EMV system using a simple PID control. The conventional EMV systems using only EM show significant nonlinear characteristics. Therefore, it is very difficult to control the valve position and several complex control schemes are used. This paper focused on the control performance improvement using a PM/EM hybrid actuator. In particular, a PM is used as a key design parameter such as a bias current of a magnetic bearing in order to improve the linear characteristic of the actuator, although most PM/EM hybrid actuators use a PM as a power saver during valve-open and -closed states. First, a FE (finite element) analysis was performed to confirm its linear static force characteristics. Then, both a test rig and a valve control system were built in order to prove experimentally the control performance improvement of the actuator. Finally, feasibilities of both soft landing and fast transition of the system were shown experimentally through gain-scheduled PID (proportional derivative integral) control.

  • The thesis proposes the sensorless vector control method that estimates the rotor speed and rotor time constant at the same time using stator current. In the proposed method, stator current error in the stationary reference frame is proportional to estimated speed error, and stator current error in the synchronous reference frame is proportional to estimated rotor time constant error. The proposed method can simultaneously produce a fast speed estimation and rotor time constant estimation. Therefore, this new method offers an improvement in the performance of a sensorless vector controller. And, the superiority of the proposed method is verified by simulation.

  • 본 연구에서는 저 비용 응용분야에 적합한 4스위치 3상 BLDC 전동기의 새로운 전류 제어 알고리즘을 제안하였다. 4스위치 시스템에서 빠른 속도 및 토크 응답 그리고 적은 토크 리플과 같은 좋은 동작 특성을 얻기 위한 기준 전류 발생 기법을 제안하였다. 특히, 제안한 기법은 전류 전환시 발생되는 토크 리플을 현저히 저감시켜 4스위치 시스템을 산업 응용 분야에 보다 널리 적용할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.

  • High speed drive method for a fuel injector cleaner with current control is presented in this paper. The fuel injector cleaner is used for cleaning the fuel injectors in vehicles when it is clogged with deposit and rust. The fuel injector cleaner cleans the fuel injector by turning on and off the fuel injector rapidly. When the fuel injectors are cleaned, the switching speed is very important. However, when the fuel injector is turned off, the residual current in the fuel injector coil slows down the return action of the plunger in the fuel injector deteriorating performance and speed of the fuel injector cleaner. In this paper, fast turn off operation method of fuel injectors is developed for more effective cleaning. The simulation and experiment results show the validity of the proposed method.

Highly power-efficient and reliable light-emitting diode backlight driver IC for the uniform current driving of medium-sized liquid crystal displays

  • In this paper, a light-emitting diode (LED) backlight driver integrated circuit (IC) for medium-sized liquid crystal displays (LCDs) is proposed. In the proposed IC, a linear current regulator with matched internal resistors and an adaptive phase-shifted pulse-width modulation (PWM) dimming controller are also proposed to improve LED current uniformity and reliability. The double feedback loop control boost converter is used to achieve high power efficiency, fast transient characteristic, and high dimming frequency and resolution. The proposed IC was fabricated using the 0.35 ${\mu}m$ bipolar-CMOS-DMOS (BCD) process. The LED current uniformity and LED fault immunity of the proposed IC were verified through experiments. The measured power efficiency was 90%; the measured LED current uniformity, 97%; and the measured rising and falling times of the LED current, 86 and 7 ns, respectively. Due to the fast rising and falling characteristics, the proposed IC operates up to 39 kHz PWM dimming frequency, with an 8-bit dimming resolution. It was verified that the phase difference between the PWM dimming signals is changed adaptively when LED fault occurs. The experiment results showed that the proposed IC meets the requirements for the LED backlight driver IC for medium-sized LCDs.

  • This paper proposes a DITC(Direct Instantaneous Torque Control of SRM (Switched Reluctance Motor) using a novel 4-level converter for smooth torque control and high efficiency. DITC of SRM is very useful for smooth torque control, but the driving efficiency is low due to advanced current that does not produce torque. For the high efficiency control of SRM, fast excitation and demagnetization of phase current are required. A novel 4-level converter and a new control scheme are present to improve the driving efficiency. The proposed DITC of SRM using 4-level converter is verified by computer simulation.

  • A direct digital control technique of a current source using the phase-controlled rectifier is presented. A digital firing technique without sensing the line voltage is proposed. This scheme generates firing pulses directly from error signal between command and output voltage. Thus the phase detection transformers filters and zero-crossing detector are unnecessary. The synchronism is modeled and analized. Also a software synchronization algorithm is presented without a look up table and controls the system in real time with fast dynamic characteristics. Using the single-chip microprocessor 8097BH, the direct digital control is implemented with minimal hardware structure. Using the time-weighted performance index, the optimal discrete IPM control technique is also proposed to control the current of the PCR.

  • For the purpose of fast response and simplifing system angle control strategy is selected. And the analysis and dynamic performance of a slip frequency controlled current source inverter fed induction motor drive with stator frequency compensation (indirect torque angle control) is investigated. The current control loop including motor is modeled and speed control loop including the frequency compensation is analysed. And transfer function of overal system is simplified. Experimental results are given in support of the analytical procedure.

LMI-Based Synthesis of Robust Iterative Learning Controller with Current Feedback for Linear Uncertain Systems

  • This paper addresses the synthesis of an iterative learning controller for a class of linear systems with norm-bounded parameter uncertainties. We take into account an iterative learning algorithm with current cycle feedback in order to achieve both robust convergence and robust stability. The synthesis problem of the developed iterative learning control (ILC) system is reformulated as the ${\gamma}$-suboptimal $H_{\infty}$ control problem via the linear fractional transformation (LFT). A sufficient convergence condition of the ILC system is presented in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Furthermore, the ILC system with fast convergence rate is constructed using a convex optimization technique with LMI constraints. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • This paper presents a new method on controller design of brushless dc motors. In such drives the current ripples are generated by motor inductance in stator windings and the back EMF. To suppress the current ripples the current controller is generally used. To minimize the size and the cost of the drives it is desirable to control motors without the current controller and the current sensing circuits. To estimate the motor current it is modeled by a neural network that is configured as an output-error dynamic system. The identified model is essentially a one step ahead prediction structure in which fast inputs and outputs are used to calculate the current output. Using the model, effective estimator to compensate the effects of disturbance has been designed. The effectiveness of the proposed current estimator is verified through experiments.
