The analysis of reliabilities of process facilities often uses models based on the Weibull distribution. The parameters in these models are functions of operating conditions, and determined by experiments. Using these values, we calculate the reliability, mean time to failure, and standard deviation. The conventional method assumes that the operating condition is constant, and thus treats the model parameters as constants. In this paper, a reliability function is proposed which is applicable when the scale parameter is a function of time, and an analysis method based on this is also presented. A case study on a cooling fan resulted in a big difference from the conventional method to which the average operating conditions were applied. The proposed method is also applicable to other process facilities, and expected to effectively take into account the effects of changes in the operating conditions on the reliabilities of the facilities.
A field-circuit coupling model of a typical faulty generator is established to correct through-bolt end-region overheating and breakdown failure in a tubular hydro-generator. Using the model, eddy current loss and electromagnetic forces on through bolts under normal and failure conditions are analyzed and compared and the natural frequency of a through bolt is determined. Based on the analysis results, the causative mechanism of failure is revealed and targeted improvement design measures are proposed. The numerical results are found to be consistent with the actual fault characteristics, validating the design measure improvements. The results are useful in improving the design and manufacturing standards and enhancing the operational reliability of large tubular hydro-generators.

This study was originated to investigate the imparired parts of the mist and dust blowers and intended to analyze the causes of their failures by the use of the Weibull probability paper. By the use of the paper, the parts which were needed to change the design, the force of the urgency, the mean time between failures of the parts and the basic causes of the troubles could be predicted. The survey showed that the following parts got out of order: (A) flexible rubber hose, (B) blowing fan, (C) lead valve, (D) piston ring. (E) crank main bearing, (F) coil in magneto and (G) needle valve in carburettor. The analysis of the survey indicated that the parts G, C, E and D were belonged to "wear-out failure", and that the mean time between failures became shorter in order as indicated above. To insure longer lives of those parts, it would be necessary to change the design and the material and to upgrade operators mechanical technique of the mist and dust blower. The failure of the parts A, B and F was classified as "randomfailure", and they did not seem to be the "wear-out" at that time. The parts B and F was evaluated as "initial failure". Quality controls and operating tests by the producer. and the operational training for users should be strengthened so as to eliminate these failures. Were the failures only in the parts A, C, D, E, F and G, it could be said that the "reliability" of the mist and dust blower would fall to 10 percent in the second year, and 50 percent of the mist and dust blowers would fail in all parts A, C, D, E, F and G before the blower would have control insect and disease in 58.2 hectares. The use of the Weibull probability paper for analyzing failures of the mist and dust blowers was effective in that it analyzed failure in the relationship between strength of the parts and users actual circumstanoes.
In this paper a robust 2-noded connection element has been developed for modelling the bolted end-plate connection between steel beam and column at elevated temperatures. The numerical procedure described is based on the model proposed by Huang (2011), incorporating additional developments to more precisely determinate the tension, compression and bending moment capacities of end-plate connection in fire. The proper failure criteria are proposed to calculate the tension capacity for each individual bolt row. In this new model the connection failure due to bending, axial tension, compression and shear are considered. The influence of the axial force of the connected beam on the connection is also taken into account. This new model has the advantages of both the simple and component-based models. In order to validate the model a total of 22 tests are used. It is evident that this new connection model has ability to accurately predict the behaviour of the end-plate connection at elevated temperatures, and can be used to represent the end-plate connections in supporting performance-based fire resistance design of steel-framed composite buildings.
In order to observe the internal damage of concrete in real time, we introduced acoustic emission nondestructive detecting technology into a series of fracture tests; the test results revealed the whole process that concrete undergoes when it sustains damage that leads to failure, according to the change rules of the acoustic emission parameters. The results showed that both the initiation and unstable loads can be accurately determined using the abrupt change of the acoustic emission rate curves and the turning point of the acoustic emission parameters' accumulative curves. The whole process, from damage to failure, includes five phases, beginning with damage, such as cracking, a stable crack growth process, a critical unstable stage, and unstable propagation. The brittle fracture characteristics of concrete change when steel bars are joined, because the steel bars and the concrete structure bond, which causes an increase in the acoustic emission signals within the fracture process of the reinforced concrete. The unstable propagation stage is also extended. Our research results provide a valid methodology and technical explanations, which can help researchers to monitor the cracking process of concrete structures, in real time, during actual projects.
Piers are the main lateral force-resisting members of high-speed railway (HSR) bridges used in China and are characterized by low axial load ratios, low longitudinal reinforcement ratios, low stirrup ratios, and high shear span ratios. It is well known that flexural, flexural-shear, and shear failures of piers may occur during an earthquake. In this study, a new shear strength model was developed to simulate the seismic failure of HSR solid piers accurately. First, low cyclic-loading test data of solid piers obtained in recent years were collected to set up a database for model verification. Second, based on the test database, the applicability of existing shear strength models was evaluated. Finally, a new shear strength model for HSR solid piers with round-ended cross-sections was derived based on the truss model and ultimate equilibrium theory. In comparison with existing models, it was demonstrated that the proposed model could be used to predict the shear strength of HSR piers more accurately.
Rockburst disasters pose serious threat to mining safety and underground excavation, especially in China, resulting in massive life-wealth loss and even compulsive closed-down of some coal mines. To investigate the mechanism of rockbursts that occur under a state of static forces, a stress model with sidewall as prototype was developed and verified by a group of laboratory experiments and numerical simulations. In this model, roadway sidewall was simplified as a square plate with axial compression and end (horizontal) restraints. The stress field was solved via the Airy stress function. To track the "closeness degree" of the stress state approaching the yield limit, an unbalanced force F was defined based on the Mohr-Coulomb yield criterion. The distribution of the unbalanced force in the plane model indicated that only the friction angle above a critical value could cause the first failure on the coal in the deeper of the sidewall, inducing the occurrence of rockbursts. The laboratory tests reproduced the rockburst process, which was similar to the prediction from the theoretical model, numerical simulation and some disaster scenes.
This study aims at investigating the hysteretic performance of a novel composite wall panel fabricated by infilling aerated concrete blocks into a novel light-steel frame used for low-rise residential buildings. The novel light-steel frame is consisted of two thin-wall rectangular hollow section columns and a truss-beam assembled using patented U-shape connectors. Two bare light-steel frames and two composite wall panels have been tested to failure under horizontal cyclic loading. Hysteretic curves, lateral resistance and stiffness of four specimens have been investigated and analyzed. Based on the testing results, it is found that the masonry infill can significantly increase the lateral resistance and stiffness of the novel light-steel frame, about 2.3~3 and 21.2~31.5 times, respectively. Failure mode of the light-steel frame is local yielding of the column. For the composite wall panel, firstly, masonry infill is crushed, subsequently, local yielding may occur at the column if loading continues. Hysteretic curve of the composite wall panel obtained is not plump, implying a poor energy dissipation capacity. However, the light-steel frame of the composite wall panel can dissipate more energy after the masonry infill is crushed. Therefore, the composite wall panel has a much higher energy dissipation capacity compared to the bare light-steel frame.
Aiming at the mechanical and structural characteristics of the contact zone composite rock, the shear tests and numerical studies were carried out. The effects of the differences in mechanical properties of different materials and the normal stress on shear properties of contact zone composite samples were analyzed from a macro-meso level. The results show that the composite samples have high shear strength, and the interface of different materials has strong adhesion. The differences in mechanical properties of materials weakens the shear strength and increase the shear brittleness of the sample, while normal stress will inhibit these effect. Under low/high normal stress, the sample show two failure modes, at the meso-damage level: elastic-shearing-frictional sliding and elastic-extrusion wear. This is mainly controlled by the contact and friction state of the material after damage. The secondary failure of undulating structure under normal-shear stress is the nature of extrusion wear, which is positively correlated to the normal stress and the degree of difference in mechanical properties of different materials. The increase of the mechanical difference of the sample will enhance the shear brittleness under lower normal stress and the shear interaction under higher normal stress.

In this work, the engine oil resistant evaluation and breakdown analysis of room temperature vulcanizing silicone adhesives were performed through the surface properties, thermal stabilities, adhesive strength, and morphology measurements. As a result, the permeation of engine oil into adhesive specimens was carried out from surface to center in the specimens. And the oil content in the adhesive specimens was increased and the Si-O-Si bond of the adhesives was decomposed with increasing the aging time. The TGA results indicated that the thermal degradation was mainly occurred at under and surfaces of the specimens. The tensile strength, elongation, and adhesive strength of the adhesives were significantly decreased after the engine oil resistant tests, which could be attributed to the initial lose of adhesive properties resulting from the engine oil absorption and thermal aging. And the failure mode of the adhesive specimens was changed from cohesive failure to interfacial failure.
