The purpose of this study was to identify the burden, health promotion behavior and health status and to describe the relationship of the burden, health promotion behavior and health status of the family caregivers of intensive care unit patients. Method: The subjects were 48 family caregivers of ICU patients in a University Hospital. Data were collected between June, 1 and July, 31, 2000 using structured questionnaires. Research tools used were Suh and Oh's Burden Scale, Revised Walker, Sechrist, & Pender's HPLP(1987) ; Revised Nam's Health State Scale(1965). Result: The mean score of burden of family caregiver was 3.01(full score was 5). The mean score of health promotion behavior of family caregiver was 2.52(full score was 4). And the mean score of health status of family caregiver was 0.68(full score was 1.00). The score of psychological health state was a little higher than the physiological one. In correlational analysis, the burden and the health status of caregivers were reversely correlated . The correlation between the burden and the health promotion behavior, and the health behavior and health status were not significant. Conclusion: The more burden caregivers of ICU patients felt, the worse their health status. So nurses need to understand the family caregiver's burden and apply nursing care that can reduce burden, in order to improve the health status of family caregivers.
The objectives of the unit ‘Family Relations’in high school Home Economics Education is to help the students cultivating proper values and self-esteem, maintaining harmonious personal relations not only by understanding human relationships in family, but also by acquiring role play, and is to wisely cope with many problems occurring in social life, which are indispensable for those living in modern society. But at present it is hard for the students to gain those abilities mentioned above, for the present unit ‘Family Relations’lays special emphasis only on memorizing specific knowledge about the understanding of a family. To improve the present educational situation, this study develops a new teaching-learning method based on the role play model concerning the ‘Family Relation’area of high school Home Economics Education curriculum. This study is theoretically based on the literature and previous studies on present problems of our various family relations, and solving its problems, and suggests lesson model of role play and its effect. This study was performed as following procedures: the ‘Family Relation’unit of the present high school Home Economics Education curriculum was analyzed, and surveyed students to discover the conflicts and their solutions the high school students are now experiencing in their family relations. Accordingly, a new lesson model of the ‘Family Relation’area, applying role play was developed. Based on the developed lesson plan, two-hour classes were experimented and positive evaluation was given by students.
This study is to analyze women's power in family to be related to Anbang, kitchen, dining room, and utility room planning in a unit plan of condominium apartment housing in rural area Data were collected 194 unit plans from 9 eastern regions of Kungi-Do. The results are as followed: 1) Anbang reflects the women's power on changing its space character into mater bedroom, the highest hierarchy in private zone, and planning a dress room in it. 2) Dining room and kitchen is openly centered on the unit plan, but kitchen is still only women's working space for family and agriculture depended on literature review. Dining space is not activated family interaction, so it is not different from urban apartment housing. However, its location and character are changed, and its hierarchy is relatively higher with women. Dining room and kitchen tend to plan visually separated after 2001, so its trend seems to establish women's territory at home. 3) Whole family can't be easy to access utility and back balcony close to kitchen, and these spaces are functionally separated for women's house work. This design trend seems to establish for women's area. 4) Finally, women's power seems to be effective in house working area including kitchen space depended on results. Also, these results from rural condominium apartment are similar to urban ones in previous study.
In recent years, the recipients of the services of the health centers in Korea have been shifted from individual sick persons to families as a unit. As a result, the home visiting care records which are all filled out manually, will be increased. Since there is virtually no increase in the number of community health nurses, the CHNs are required to work more efficiently. One of the ways to make the CHNs' work more efficient is to reduce recording time by using a computer. However, a computer system that can manage the families as a unit has not yet been developed. In response to this need, we developed a database system that can be utilized in home visiting care service. The family assessment data is collected. diagnosed. and evaluated according to the family diagnosis classification. The system for family diagnosis consists of seven areas. Those areas are family structure. maintenance of the family system, interaction and interchange. support. coping and adaptation, health management. and housing environment. The areas of the family diagnosis consists of 99 items in all. We expect the following from this system. First. the CHNs will be able to identify family problems more easily. Second. the community's health level can be confirmed by the statistics the system produces. Thirdly, the CHNs' nursing services will be cost effective via reduced recording time. Finally, the family problems of the sick individuals which have been neglected under the health system oriented on individual persons can be effectively managed.
This paper is focused on studying a pedestrian passage that forms exterior space of the housing unit on diverse prerequisites and convenience of residential environment regards to plans for Multi-family Housing Complex. The paper explores the actual usage of a pedestrian passage installed in Multi-family Housing Complex and examine whether the nature-friendly space that includes the exterior pedestrian passage of the housing unit is being applied variously on a pedestrian passage. In order to obtain an analysis of the current status on case study unit, the study has prepared an analyzing tool for the environment in use for the exterior pedestrian passage and was able to construction problematic points by applying the obtained data. Thanks for the analysis, a comprehensive evaluation on the plans for the pedestrian passage was implemented through correlation with a green tract of land, living space and the exterior pedestrian passage installed in Multi-family Housing Complex.
Purpose: The main objective of this paper is, to evaluate the unit design for patient-centered care and to draw lessons-learned for further improvement. Methods: This study conducted a case study of the intensive care unit, designed to fulfill patient-centered care in the US. It evaluated the effectiveness of the unit by incorporating several study methods such as plan analyses, direct observations through nursing tracking and behavior mapping, and focus group interviews. Results: The major design decision made in this patient-centered unit was the use of patient rooms with designated family areas and distributed nursing stations. Both design features appeared to be a success on a variety of research metrics and outcomes. The study identified that the patient rooms ultimately help family members to spent more time with their loved ones, which leads to increased satisfaction of family members and nurses also report that they generally enjoy the distributed nurses' stations, which provide a comfortable environment to complete their regular lines of work such as charting, monitoring patients, and collaborating with their colleagues. Implications: Certain design features in intensive care units such as patient rooms with designated family areas and distributed nursing stations could appropriately support hospitals to fulfill patient-centered care.

Purpose: For the dignity of patients nearing the end of their lives, it is essential to provide end-of-life (EoL) care in a separate, dedicated space. This study investigated the utilization of specialized rooms for dying patients within a hospice unit. Methods: This retrospective study examined patients who died in a single hospice unit between January 1, 2017, and December 31, 2021. Utilizing medical records, we analyzed the circumstances surrounding death, the employment of specialized rooms for terminally ill patients, and the characteristics of those who received EoL care in a shared room. Results: During the 1,825-day survey period, deaths occurred on 632 days, and 799 patients died. Of these patients, 496 (62.1%) received EoL care in a dedicated room. The average duration of using this dedicated space was 1.08 days. Meanwhile, 188 patients (23.5%) died in a shared room. Logistic regression analysis revealed that a longer stay in the hospice unit was associated with a lower risk of receiving EoL care in a shared room (odds ratio [OR]=0.98, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.97~0.99; P=0.002). Furthermore, a higher number of deaths on the day a patient died was associated with a greater risk of receiving EoL care in a shared room (OR=1.66, 95% CI 1.33~2.08; P<0.001). Conclusion: To ensure that more patients receive EoL care for an adequate duration in a private setting, additional research is necessary to increase the number of dedicated rooms and incorporate them into the hospice unit at an early stage.
Purpose: This study aimed to understand the essence of experiences of patients and family members during flexible visiting in an intensive care unit (ICU). Methods: This is a qualitative study using interviews with open ended questions. We used Colaizzi's method of phenomenological interpretation. Results: Flexible visiting in the ICU impacted the patients and their families in various ways. The following categories were extracted from the patients' experiences with flexible visiting: 1) the opportunity to feel the presence of the family and 2) the burden of unrestricted visiting. The following categories were extracted from the families' experiences with flexible visiting: 1) psychological comfort by convenience 2) being aware of health care professionals and critical care nursing in the intensive care unit, and 3) double trouble. Conclusions: These results showed that flexible visiting in the ICU affected the patients and their families positively and negatively. Therefore, nursing staff need to design psychological and social interventions that address the needs of patients and their families.
The demand and supply of programs of parenthood programs for fathers are increasing with changes in the image of male parents. Under this backdrop, a necessary requirement is to analyze the current status of father programs that are spearheaded by governments and the satisfaction with them to determine if they actually meet the needs of fathers. This study conducted such an examination for the fatherhood programs that were provided as a mandatory public service by the Healthy Family & Multicultural Family Support Center in 2017. To this end, the research analyzed performance and satisfaction data on 776 projects, including 1293 programs that were required for provision in 101 integrated centers nationwide. The results showed that satisfaction with fatherhood programs differed according to the project area, the location of a center, the period of implementation, the methods of proceeding, the participation unit (whether an entire family or an individual family member), the number of participants, and the number of sessions. Overall, the level of satisfaction was higher in "fathers meetings" (under the community domain) than "support for the father role" (under the family relationship domain). In relation to implementation period, satisfaction with the programs was high in the 4th quarter of implementation. Satisfaction with the programs was also higher for culturally based initiatives than education-oriented programs. Satisfaction was higher when the participation unit was the family than when such unit was the individual. The smaller the number of participants, the higher the satisfaction level. Finally, the number of sessions was deemed satisfactory when it was completed in more than four sessions. This study is meaningful in that it provides the basis of effective use of the government budget by analyzing the status and satisfaction of the fatherhood programs, which have been implemented since the integration of the Healthy Families & Multicultural Family Support Center.
This paper examines the changes in housing characteristics occupied by two or more households from 1995-2005, as a replicated follow-up study done by the previous decade of 1985-1995. The data analyzed were based on the Population and Housing Census in 1995, 2000, and 2005 by the Korean National Statistical Office. Results showed decreasing trends in the percentages of housing units occupied by multi-households and of households sharing a housing unit, while the average number of households for a shared housing unit was increasing. Detached dwellings in dongs (neighborhood) including ordinarily single-family detached ones, mainly multi-family houses, were the most often shared with other households even in the trend of the decreasing number of the detached housing. Further research is suggested to focus on housing circumstances of households sharing a detached dwelling in Dongs by the type of detached dwellings.
