  • The purpose of this study was to investigate how marriage migration females understand and adjust to the culture of family life in Korea. The study was the conducted by extensively interviewing one member from each of a total of 16 women's multicultural families at a daycare center area in Seoul between June 16, 2010 and July 28, 2010. The results can be summarized as follows: All interviewees were marriage migration females, in the range 20 to 50 years of age, and with middle educational backgrounds. They all had middle-level incomes. Through the content analysis of the informants' responses, three major factors were found to influence the understanding and adjustment of to the culture of family living: personal factors, familial support, and sociocultural support systems. Among the personal factors, the intimacy of the married couples was trouble major factor. An issue that tended to arise was that Korean husbands' traditional culture in terms of their way of thinking was often different from that of the wife's culture. However, husbands supported their wives' outside activities and friendships in order to help them adjust to the culture of family living. The husbands made an effort to understand their wives' original culture and national food, often visiting restaurants that served their wives' national cuisine. In terms of familial support, the most important factors affecting marriage migration females were orienting the education of children to the mother's native language, cooking their national foods, and visiting the mother's nation with the children. Marriage migration females had the following requires: The teacher in the daycare center needed to be interested in children from multicultural families and encourage self-pride in the marriage migration females' children. In terms of sociocultural support systems, marriage migration females are conscious of the indisposition and lack of consideration in Korean life. However, the Korean government and local provinces are concentrating attention on education for marriage migration females in terms of language, because learning the language can help these women to become accustomed to the rituals of Korean life. Marriage migration females make an effort to understand and adjust to Korean family living culture that involves the food culture for ceremonial occasions, folk plays, and places of historic interest. A matter of importance is Korean people's effort to understand and adjust to multicultural family with their distinctive cultures. Welfare policy related to multicultural families involves adopting supportive laws and actions.

  • Participants in this study of adolescents residing in differing ecological environments were 200 Korean-Chinese middle school students of Yanji, China, and 200 Korean middle school students of Gyeongbuk Province, ROK. Instruments were the Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment(Armsden & Greenberg, 1987), Social Competence Inventory(Doh & Falbo, 1999), and Self-Perception Profile for Adolescents(Harter, 1988). For Korean-Chinese adolescents, attachment with mothers directly influenced peer relationships and school adjustment; indirect influence was mediated by self-concept. For Korean adolescents, attachment influenced peer relationships and school adjustment only indirectly by self-concepts. These findings contrast with those of Choi & Lee(2005) suggesting that the socio-emotional outcome of attachment should be understood in relation to socio-cultural context as well as developmental stage.

The subjects were 148 6th grade children selected from three elementary schools in Seoul; family income was less than 2,000,000 won, Statistical techniques were Person's Correlation and Simple and Multiple Regression. Findings were that (1) Perceived parenting behavior was a significant predictor of the school adjustment in low-income children. (2) Perceived parenting behavior was a significant predictor of the ego-identity of low-income children. (3) When the effect of perceived supportive parenting behaviors was controlled, the effect of ego-identity of low-income children was significant. However, when the effect of ego-identity of low-income children was controlled, the effect of perceived supportive parenting behaviors became non-significant.

The survey was conducted from June 20, 2003 to November 30, 2003 and the analysis included 202 parents of the hospitalized children. The data analysis utilized SPSS 11.0 program. Result: The correlation coefficients among major variables showed that family stressor was positively related with family strains(r=.249, P<.01), and negatively related with family hardiness(r=-.183, P<.05). Family strains was negative related with general family value(r=-.243, p<.01), and family adaptation(r=-.505, P<.05). Correlations of general family value was positive with family hardness (r=.153, p<.05), and family adaptation (r=.200, p<.01). • Purpose: This study investigated whether parenting stress, work-family conflict, resilience affect retention intent in Korean nurses returning to work after parental leave. Methods: The participants in this study were 111 nurses recruited from 10 hospitals in Korea, who were working after formal parental leave from their hospitals. Collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the t-test, analysis of variance, the Mann-Whitney U-test, Pearson correlation coefficients, and hierarchical regression. Results: Retention intention (33.80±7.78), parenting stress (101.70±17.57), and resilience (85.02±12.75) were at greater than moderate levels and a midpoint level of work-family conflict (29.63±7.00) was noted in this sample of mostly women nurses in their 30s. The factors affecting retention intent were parental leave duration, the number of times that participants had taken parental leave, health condition, work-family conflict, and resilience. The total explanatory power of these variables was 36.7%. Retention intent had a negative correlation with parenting stress and work-family conflict. Conversely, retention intent was positively correlated with resilience. Conclusion: This study supports the need for flexible adjustment of returning nurses' working hours and family-friendly policies to promote balance between work and family. It is also necessary to develop and apply measures that boost resilience and support health improvement for nurses returning to work.As nurses are often assigned to new areas of work upon return, training programs to aid their adjustment may also be helpful.
