  • The Occupational Safety and Health Act holds that industrial safety helmets can be used as protective equipment to prevent the risk of injury in fall accidents. To better understand the importance given to PPE for the head, we analyzed the relevant regulations and guidelines in developed countries and reviewed the guidelines on testing safety helmets. The PPE regulations in Korea were notably different from those in other countries. First, except in Korea and Japan, safety helmets were used for protection against falling objects, flying objects, impact, or electric shock. However, the regulations did not recognize safety helmets as a PPE against fall hazards. Second, the impact energy applied on the helmet was within the range 50-100 J, and the helmet could protect only the upper part of the head against hazards such as the impact of falling objects, flying objects, etc. Third, in Korean regulations, the term "fall" was used in relation to the parts where the safety helmet was specified as a fall hazard PPE, unlike in other countries. We propose that the term "fall" should be revised to "shock" in Korean regulations for the safety helmet.

  • The demand for a construction method capable of securing a safety environment and improving quality is increasing. There is a high risk of falling when working at a high place in an environment where it is difficult to secure visibility, such as an underground space, and there is a risk of falling if cement liquid waterproof materials are transferred to the top of the scaffold by manpower. In addition, when working on a high place in a poor environment, the quality uniformity of the upper part of the wall is deteriorated. In addition, as waterproof technicians gradually age and decrease, it is difficult to secure them, so it is urgent to prepare countermeasures against the shortage of waterproof technicians. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to develop cement liquid waterproof spouting construction equipment that can secure uniform quality of construction areas to prevent accidents and ensure safety of workers, improve work efficiency and quality due to improvement of work environment. The adhesion performance of the cement liquid waterproof material could be improved by about 20% in accordance with the use of the equipment.

  • This study is a railway accident investigation statistic study with the purpose of prediction and classification of accident severity. Linear regression models have some difficulties in classifying accident severity, but a logistic regression model can be used to overcome the weaknesses of linear regression models. The logistic regression model is applied to escalator (E/S) accidents in all stations on 5~8 lines of the Seoul Metro, using data mining techniques such as logistic regression analysis. The forecasting variables of E/S accidents in urban railway stations are considered, such as passenger age, drinking, overall situation, behavior, and handrail grip. In the overall accuracy analysis, the logistic regression accuracy is explained 76.7%. According to the results of this analysis, it has been confirmed that the accuracy and the level of significance of the logistic regression analysis make it a useful data mining technique to establish an accident severity prediction model for urban railway casualty accidents.

  • The aging of Korea is rapidly advancing in an unprecedented rate in the world. Indoor and outdoor safety accidents involving the elderly frequently occur, with elderly population increasing. Because the physical strength of elderly is decreased, it is necessary to develop devices that aid the everyday life of the elderly to prevent safety accidents. Among many activities, the motions of standing from and sitting on a chair require much physical strength from particular body parts, which causes an overload for particular body parts. To the elderly the repeating motion of standing from and sitting down on a chair is burdensome, because they do not have enough physical strength compare to young persons. As a result the elderly could be injured or falling during standing or sitting. Therefore, the development of a lift chair that considers the problems mentioned above is necessary to prevent the safety accidents of the elderly. The study designed a non-motorized lift chair that comfortably aids the standing and sitting down motion for the use of the elderly by reflecting the anthropometric data of the Korean elderly over 65 years old. Also the design was implemented to smoothly aid the standing motion by considering the knee angle of the elderly when standing. Because the regained strength to stand from a chair is depend on the knee angle. Unlike existing lift devices, this device utilizes a tilting mechanism that does not use electric power so that the product could be composed inexpensively than existing chairs released in the market.
