  • Dynamic properties of materials by shock loads such as rock blasting and earthquake are recently attracted in the design of aboveground and underground structures. The advance of measuring devices enables to obtain the whole histories of stress and strain in rock specimen of which the failure is completed in several hundred microseconds. The SHPB has been a popular and promising technique to study the dynamic behavior of rock. And the dynamic compressive, tensile and other test with this experiment system are planned to be Suggested Methods of ISRM. This technical paper is to introduced one study article which focuses the design of 3S (special shaped striker) to produce the half-sine wave to eliminate the problems of the rectangular wave. This article is also describing the advantage of half-sine incident wave and size effect of rock dynamic strength.

Shear Strength Estimation of Clean Sands via Shear Wave Velocity (전단파 속도를 통한 모래의 전단강도 예측)

  • We perform a series of experimental tests to evaluate whether the shear strength of clean sands can be reliably predicted from shear wave velocity. Isotropic drained triaxial tests on clean sands reconstituted at different relative densities are performed to measure the shear strength and bender elements are used to measure the shear wave velocity. Laboratory tests reveal that a correlation between shear wave velocity, void ratio, and confining pressure can be made. The correlation can be used to determine the void ratio from measured shear wave velocity, from which the shear strength is predicted. We also show that a unique relationship exists between maximum shear modulus and effective axial stress at failure. The accuracy of the equation can be enhanced by including the normalized confining pressure in the equation. Comparisons between measured and predicted effective friction angle demonstrate that the proposed equation can accurately predict the internal friction angle of granular soils, accounting for the effect of the relative density, from shear wave velocity.

Activation of a Ca2+ wave by Shear Stress in Atrial Myocytes: Role of Phospholipase C-inositol 1,4,5-Trisphosphate Receptor Signaling (전단 자극에 의한 심방 근세포 칼슘 웨이브의 발생: Phospholipase C-이노시톨 1,4,5-삼인산 수용체 신호전달의 역할)

  • Cardiac myocytes are subjected to fluid shear stress during each contraction and relaxation. Under pathological conditions, such as valve disease, heart failure or hypertension, shear stress in cardiac chamber increases due to high blood volume and pressure. The shear stress induces proarrhythmic longitudinal global $Ca^{2+}$ waves in atrial myocytes. In the present study, we further explored underlying cellular mechanism for the shear stress-induced longitudinal global $Ca^{2+}$ wave in isolated rat atrial myocytes. A shear stress of ${\sim}16dyn/cm^2$ was applied onto entire single myocyte using pressurized fluid puffing. Confocal $Ca^{2+}$ imaging was performed to measure local and global $Ca^{2+}$ signals. Shear stress elicited longitudinally propagating global $Ca^{2+}$ wave (${\sim}80{\mu}m/s$). The occurrence of shear stress-induced atrial $Ca^{2+}$ wave was eliminated by the inhibition of ryanodine receptors (RyRs) or inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptors ($IP_3Rs$). In addition, pretreatment of phospholipase C (PLC) inhibitor U73122, but not its inactive analogue U73343, abolished the generation of longitudinal $Ca^{2+}$ wave under shear stress. Our data suggest that shear-induced longitudinal $Ca^{2+}$ wave may be induced by $Ca^{2+}$-induced $Ca^{2+}$ release through the RyRs which is triggered by $PLC-IP_3R$ signaling in atrial myocytes.

Wave-Induced Response of Unsaturated and Multi-layered Seabed; A Semi-analytical Method (파랑으로 인한 불포화된 다층 해저지반의 거동;준해석적 방법)

  • Wave-induced response, liquefaction and stability of unsaturated seabed are studied. The unsaturated seabed is modeled as a fluid-filled polo-elastic medium. The coupled process of fluid flow and the deformation of soil skeleton is formulated in the framework of Biot's theory. The resulting governing equations are solved using a semi-analytical method to evaluate the stresses and pore water pressure of unsaturated and multi-layered seabed. The semi-analytical method can be applied to calculate a pore pressure and the stresses of in anisotropic inhomogeneous seabed. The results indicate that the degree of saturation influences mostly on the magnitudes of a pore pressure and the stresses of unsaturated and multi-layed seabed. Based on the pore pressure and stresses in seabed, the analysis on the possibilities of liquefaction and shear failure was performed. The results show that the maximum depth of shear failure occurrence is deeper than the maximum liquefaction depth.

An Analysis of Outflow Hydrograph Resulting from an Earth Dam-Break (Earth Dam의 파괴로 인한 유출수문곡선의 해석)

  • The mathematical analysis of the outflow hydrograph resulting from earth dam-break was studied. DBFW(Dam Break Flood Wave) model based on the breach mechanism and reservoir storage equation was developed and was applied to the Teton and Buffalo-Creek dam. The modeling results showed that the shape of outflow hydrograph, peak discharge and failure duration time had a good agreement with the data analyzed by NWS. The breach mechanisms which exert influence on the outflow hydrograph were consisted of geomorphological characteristics of the reservoir, breach mode, breach width and failure duration time. The earth dams in Korea were classified into four types by the reservoir geomorphology, and water surface elevation-failure duration time-peak discharge relationships were also presented. The methodological procedure made in this paper will provide a basic contribution to dam-break study in river system.

Reliability Analysis for Fracture of Concrete Armour Units (콘크리트 피복재의 단면파괴에 대한 신뢰성 해석)

  • A fracture or breakage of the concrete armor units in the primary cover layer of breakwaters is studied by using the reliability analysis which may be defined as the structural stability. The reliability function can be derived as a function of the angle of rotation that represents the rocking of armor units quantitatively. The relative influences of all of random variables related to the material and geometric properties on the fracture of armor units is analyzed in detail. In addition, the probability of failure for the fracture of individual armor unit can be evaluated as a function of the incident wave height. Finally, Bernoulli random process and the allowable fracture ratio may be introduced together in this paper, by which the probability of failure of a breakwater due to the fracture of armer units can be obtained straightforwardly. It is found that the probability of failure of a breakwater due to the fracture of armor units may be varied with the several allowable fracture ratios. Therefore, it should be necessary to consider the structural stability as well as the hydraulic stability for the design of breakwaters with multi-leg slender concrete armor units of large size under wave action in deep water.

Technical Performance of Two-Dimensional Shear Wave Elastography for Measuring Liver Stiffness: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

  • Objective: To assess the technical performance of two-dimensional shear wave elastography (2D-SWE) for measuring liver stiffness. Materials and Methods: The Ovid-MEDLINE and EMBASE databases were searched for studies reporting the technical performance of 2D-SWE, including concerns with technical failures, unreliable measurements, interobserver reliability, and/or intraobserver reliability, published until June 30, 2018. The pooled proportion of technical failure and unreliable measurements was calculated using meta-analytic pooling via the random-effects model and inverse variance method for calculating weights. Subgroup analyses were performed to explore potential causes of heterogeneity. The pooled intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) for interobserver and intraobserver reliability were calculated using the Hedges-Olkin method with Fisher's Z transformation of the correlation coefficient. Results: The search yielded 34 articles. From 20 2D-SWE studies including 6196 patients, the pooled proportion of technical failure was 2.3% (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.3-3.9%). The pooled proportion of unreliable measurements from 20 studies including 6961 patients was 7.5% (95% CI, 4.7-11.7%). In the subgroup analyses, studies conducting more than three measurements showed fewer unreliable measurements than did those with three measurements or less, but no intergroup difference was found in technical failure. The pooled ICCs for interobserver reliability (from 10 studies including 517 patients) and intraobserver reliability (from 7 studies including 679 patients) were 0.87 (95% CI, 0.82-0.90) and 0.93 (95% CI, 0.89-0.95), respectively, suggesting good to excellent reliability. Conclusion: 2D-SWE shows good technical performance for assessing liver stiffness, with high technical success and reliability. Future studies should establish the quality criteria and optimal number of measurements.

Analysis of Horizontal Behavior of a Single Column/Shaft by Horizontal Two-way Pile Load Test (반복수평재하시험을 통한 단일형현장타설말뚝의 거동분석)

  • A single Column/Shaft which extended the pile to the column of the bridge with same diameter has better safety and economical profit, but it usually has larger lateral displacement due to lateral loads such as wind, earthquake, wave, etc. A series of horizontal pile load testing were performed to study the lateral behavior of single column/shaft with varying different free lengths and embedded pile lengths. Eight instrumented test piles were cast-in-placed by bonding strain gauges at certain locations on both faces of the pile to measure bending moment, from two-way loadings. Linear variable differential transformers(LVDTs) were installed to measure the lateral pile displacement. Based on this, it is found that the test single column/shaft with different free lengths shows different failure modes. If the test pile has a longer free length, the failure occurs at the near the ground surface, but the shorter one's failure occurs at the below the ground surface.

Reliability Analysis of Offshore Guyed Tower Against Anchor Pile Failures (해양 가이드-타워의 고정말뚝에 대한 신뢰도 해석)

  • For the reliability analysis of offshore guyed towers for large storm events, failure of an anchor pile of the guyline system is investigated. Two failure modes of the anchor pile due to the extreme and the cyclic wave loadings are considered. The probability of failure due to the extreme anchor load is evaluated based on the first excursion probability analysis. Degradation of the pile capacity due to cyclic loadings is evaluated by using empirical fatigue curves for a driven pile in clay. The numerical results indicate that the failure probability due to the cyclic loadings can be as large as the risk due to extreme loading, particularly for the cases with the low design safety level of the pile strength and the large uncertainty of the pile resistance.

  • In vehicle ad-hoc network (VANET) environments, traffic related information such as accident information, emergency information and real time traffic condition have to be delivered to on-board-unit (OBU) or/and road-side-equipment (RSE) for preventing traffic accidents in advance. In this paper, we introduce a Multi-Channel MAC (MCM) since the existing single channel operation may cause packet transmission delay and unexpected communication failure. To offer a seamless safety message transmission during the various services, it is necessary to manage the MAC scheduler in wireless access in vehicular environments (WAVE) systems. The MCM consists of MAC softwares and MAC hardwares where the former and the later ones are implemented with real time operation system based C language and FPGA module with VHDL language, respectively. The performance and QoS are verified by practical measurements and compared with the scheme using single channel operation.
