Properties of the material on stainless steel propeller shaft with the weld working (스테인리스강 프로펠러축의 가공에 따른 재질특성에 관한 연구)

  • Stainless steel 304 or stainless steel 630 types using propeller shaft of a small ship or a FRP fishing boat generally restrain localization corrosion and abrasion damage occurrence to shaft bearing or grand packing contact. In general, the residual stress which remains after welding or heat treatment in material can cause the stress concentration or localization corrosion. In case of small ship, stainless steel such as STS304 has long been used for propeller shaft. Meanwhile, crew of small ship tend to reuse damaged propeller shaft after repair by welding and performing heat treatment to save cost. However, it was found that reused propeller shaft by repair often caused troubles in ship's operation. In this study, the basic guideline for maintenance and treatment of propeller shaft are investigated. From the results of investigation, remarkable deterioration of the material properties and corrosion resistance on the welded work part was observed.

Correlation between Probe Frequency and Echo-Pulse Velocity for Ultrasonic Testing of a Fiber-Reinforced Plastic Hull Plate (복합소재 선체 외판의 초음파 탐상을 위한 탐촉자 주파수와 수신기 음향 속력의 상관관계)

  • Nondestructive testing is one of the most commonly used quality inspection methods for evaluating ship structures. However, accurate evaluation is dif icult because various composite materials, such as reinforcements, resin, and fiber-reinforced plastics (FRPs), are used in hulls, and manufacturing quality differences are likely to exist owing to the fabrication environment and the skill level of workers. This possibility is especially true for FRP ships because they are significantly thicker than other structures, such as automobiles and aircraft, and are mainly manufactured using the hand lay-up method. Because the density of a material is a critical condition for ultrasonic inspection, in this study, a hull plate was selected from a vessel manufactured using e-glass fiber, which is widely used in the manufacture of FRP vessels with the weight fraction of the glass content generally considered. The most suitable ultrasonic testing conditions for the glass FRP hull plate were investigated using a pulse-echo ultrasonic gauge. A-scans were performed with three probes (1.00, 2.25, and 5.00 MHz), and the results were compared with those of the hull plate thickness measured using a Vernier caliper. It was found that when the probe frequency was higher, the eco-pulse velocity of the receiver had to be lowered to obtain accurate measurement results, whereas fewer errors occurred at a relatively low probe frequency.

해양환경하에서의 알루미늄 합금 선박용 재료의 기계적 특성과 전기화학적 특성 평가

  • Recently, it is on the increase interest for Al alloy with new material for ship application to substitute for FRP ship. The reason is thatAl alloy ship has beneficial characteristics such as high sea speed, increase of loadage and easy to recycle compared with FRP ship. In this paper, mechanical and electrochemical properties are investigated by slow strain rate test experiment in various applied potential condition. These results will provide as reference data to design ship by deciding optimum protection potential regard to hydrogen embrittlement and stress corrosion cracking. In general, Al and Al alloys are not corroded with forming film which has the corrosion resistance property in neutral solution. However, it was observed that formation and destruction of passive film by $Cl^-$ ion in sea water environment. At comparison of current density after 1200 sec in potentiostatic experiment, the current density in the potential range of -0.68 $\~$-1.5 V is shown low value. The low current density means protection potential range. Elongation in applied potential of 0 V was high. However, the corrosion protection application in this condition is impossible potential because the toughness is low value by decreasing strength by active dissolution reaction at parallel part of specimen. The film composed with $CaCO_3$ and $Mg(OH)_2$ has a corrosion resistance property. However, the uniform electrodeposition coating at below -1.6 V potential is not formed since the time to form the uniform electrodeposition coating is short. Therefore, it is concluded that mechanical property is poor because effect by hydrogen gas generation is larger than that of electrodeposition coating. It is concluded that the optimum protection potential range from comparison of_maxim urn tensile strength, elongation and time to fracture is -1.3$\~$0.7 V (SSCE).

Experimental Study on the Removal of Biofouling from Specimens of Small Ship Constructions Using Water Jet (물 제트를 이용한 소형선박제작 시편의 선체부착생물 제거에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Fouling organisms attached to a ship not only greatly increase the resistance of the ship as they grow on the hull but also cause disturbances in local marine ecosystems as they move with the ship. Accordingly, the International Maritime Organization has started discussing the removal of biofouling and evaluation of cleaning performance to prevent the migration of hull-fouling species. In this study, specimens of FRP(Fiber Reinforced Plastic), HDPE(High Density Polyethylene), and CFRP(Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic) materials used for small ship construction were cured in Gyeokpo Port (Jeonlakbuk-do) for about 80 days. Then, attached organism removal experiments were performed using a water jet nozzle. The results show that seaweeds, such as laver, were removed when the distance between the nozzle and the specimen was 1.8 cm and the pressure was 100 bar. Furthermore, it was confirmed that the cleaning of barnacles was possible only when the pressure was 200 bar or more.

Effects of Water Cavitation Peening on Cavitation Characteristics of 5000 Series Al Alloys (5000계열 Al 합금의 캐비테이션 특성에 관한 워터 캐비테이션 피닝의 영향)

  • Recently, the construction of the small Al alloy ships is an increasing trend in viewpoint such as the disposal issue of a retired ship, the enhancement of environmental regulation and resources recycling etc. for FRP ships. However, Al alloy ship which can achieve high speed by light weight in marine environment is exposed to a problem on materials damage by cavitation-erosion which is generated by large impact pressure with the collapse of air bubbles due to cavitation. Consequently, in this study, water cavitation peening technology was applied in Al alloy for ship to enhance durability life by preventing cavitation damage. So, the water cavitaton peening application time that presented the excellent cavitation characteristic investigated. The weight-loss of 5456-H116, 5083-H321 and 5052-O Al alloy at the optimum water cavitation peening time were improved to 42.11 %, 50.0 % and 25.7 %, respectively.

Variation of the Incident Sound Level at the Underwater Target`s Position due to Roll Motion of the Ship (선체의 횡요로 인한 수중물표입사음압의 변동에 관하여)

  • As the first step to investigate the effect of ship's motion when detecting target with an echo sounder, variations in the incident sound level at the optional position within the sound beam due to roll motion of the transmitter have been measured and calculated. In this experiment, the transmitter (75 KHz) was mounted to the bottom of a FRP model of the 2,275 G. T. stern trawler and the receiver (75 KHz) was installed at each measuring point within the transmitter's beam. Then, the incident sound level was measured for the roll angles from the free roll test on the model ship. For a range of roll angle of $\pm$20$^{\circ}$from the vertical, the measuring values of the incident sound level at each measuring point were rapidly fluctuated from 12.9% to 78.1 depending on the roll angle, and agreed well with the caculated ones. Consquently, we concluded that the effect of ship's motion when detecting target with an echo sounder should be sufficiently considered.

Strength toss of F-Fiber Obtained from Recycling FRP Ship in a Basic Solution (폐 FRP 선박에서 분리하여 얻은 F섬유의 염기성 용액에서의 강도저하)

  • It has been reported that FRP (fiber reinforced plastic) can be recycled by separating into layers instead of crushing into powder. F-fiber obtained from roving layer separated from FRP, has bigger tensile strength than the bundle of glass fibers of which FRP was made (more than 90%). SEM image of F-fiber shows the presence of some resin. Under the proposition of usage of F-fiber in the concrete material, tensile strength is examined after soaking in a basic solution (NaOH+KOH). The reaction mechanism of strength loss may be considered as an attack of hydroxide ion ($OH^-$) on a chemical bond of Si-O-Si of glass fiber. The simulation graph of the strength loss data implies certain reaction mechanism. While in the early stage kinetically controlled reaction results in a fast drop of tensile strength, after 30 days dispersion rate of hydroxide ion plays a major role in strength loss. This result is similar to the one for the AR glass. An extrapolation of the graph would make an assumption about the lift time of F-fiber possible.

  • Analysis target ship is not introduced yet in domestic as steel yacht that is getting into the spotlight by leisure life in Australia or Japan. Sailing yacht or Yacht for leisure time made of FRP into controlling power fare mainly and the design and made of latest fishing boat and something of domestic is consisting mainly. To need investigated for concept is various kinds overall strength as that use mainly steel wire material structurally of steel yacht by small crafts about Longi strength, Transe strength portion even of design safety factor at subject to do Rule's allowable stress enough stable structure accomplish. But it is assessment of part intensity that become refer to most in small size ship.

The Protection Potential Decision by Electrochemical Experiment of Al-Mg-Si Alloy for Ship in Seawater (해수용액에서 선박용 Al-Mg-Si 합금의 전기화학적 실험에 의한 방식전위 결정)

  • The many vessels are built with FRP(Fiber-Reinforced Plastic) material for small boats and medium vessels. However, FRP is impossible to be used for recyclable material owing to environmental problems and causes large proportion of collision accidents because radar reflection wave is so weak that large vessels could not detect FRP ships during the sailing. Hence, Al alloy comes into the spotlight to solve these kinds of problems as a new-material for next generation instead of FRP. Al alloy ships are getting widely introduced for fish and leisure boats to save fuel consumption due to lightweight. In this study, it was selected 6061-T6 Al alloy which are mainly used for Al-ships and carried out various electrochemical experiment such as potential, anodic/cathodic polarization, Tafel analysis, potentiostatic experiment and surface morphologies observation after potentiostatic experiment for 1200 sec by using the SEM equipment to evaluate optimum corrosion protection potential in sea water. It is concluded that the optimum corrosion protection potential range is -1.4 V ~ -0.7 V(Ag/AgCl) for 6061-T6 Al alloy, in the case of application of ICCP(Impressed current cathodic protection), which was shown the lowest current density at the electrochemical experiment and good specimen surface morphologies after potentiostatic experiment for Al-Mg-Si(6061-T6) Al alloy in seawater environment.

Comparison on the fire performance of additional insulation materials for improving the fire retardancy in engine-room of FRP vessel (FRP 선박 기관실 난연성 향상을 위한 추가 방열재의 화재성능비교)

  • To prevent the flame spread in FRP vessel in fire, the engine-room of the vessel should be constructed additionally with laminated fire-retardant resin over 3 times or equivalent insulation materials to former according to the relevant standard for FRP vessel structure. It is surveyed that insulation materials called 'Gel coat' are widely used in FRP fishing vessel, however, test method and its criteria for Gel coat are not clearly establish and have not been evaluated yet, while test method and criteria for fire-retardant resin and fire-retardant polyurethane composite are described in test standard for type-approval. In this study, 3 fire-retardant resins, 4 gel coats, 1 flame-retardant paint and 1 polyurethane composite were selected based on the survey and were evaluated according to both IMO FTP Code part 5 and flame-retardant test. When comparing based on CFE values from flame-spread test, average value for 4 gel coats were lower than that of 3 fire-retardant resins. As for flame-retardant test, there were no significant differences between fire-retardant resin and gel coat, based on charred area.
