  • This study deals with the strengthening effect and behavioral characteristics of square concrete column wrapped with carbon FRP sheet. The increase in axial compression capacity comes from the confinement effect of wrapped CFRP sheet. Because of the shape of square concrete column, the confinement effect is smaller than that in circular column. For the experimental program, four parameters including the number of sheet, the size of column specimen, the aspect ratio, the corner rounding, and the transformation in shape from square to circular were selected to examine the strengthening effect and behavioral characteristics for each parameter. Experimental program comprised fifty five square concrete column specimens for different eleven types. The compression test results confirmed that the strengthening effect can be increased by the confinement of wrapped and bonded CFRP sheet. However, the confining effect was decreased with the increase of square column size. The other hand, the ductility in square concrete column greatly increased due to caging effect of CFRP sheet. The transformation in shape from square to circular considerably increased both the compressive strength and the ductility of the concrete column wrapped with CFRP sheet. In addition, using test results and existing studies, accuracy and reliability of the existing strength models for CFRP-confined square concrete are verified.

  • 12 concrete blocks, on which hybrid fibrous sheets (carbon fiber and glass fiber) had been bonded, were subjected to tensile load in order to estimate properties of the bonded interface. the sheet length was varied by 100mm, 200mm and 400mm. It was found that more than 150mm bond length is required to achieve the maximum bearing capacity of the interface. In this study, maximum bond stress $\tau_{F,max}$, ultimate slip $S_{FU}$ of the interface were estimated $\tau_{F,max}$=3.0MPa and $S_{FU}$= 0.175mm, respectively.

  • Today, some bridges or highways are becoming superannuated in Korea. Also, in this section, rehabilitation, replacement and expansion are necessary to increasing traffic volumes these days. Bridge reconstruction is major problem because it has relation to civil application, economical loss and loss of vehicles made a detour while this work. Many precast components and methods of construction are developed for this issue. Many research of various precast components and new materials are being performed owing to apply to prefabrication bridges. The present paper represents experimental studies on the performance of precast CFFT pier model. Also, stay-in-place RC pier and stay-in-place CFFT pier are made an experiment on due to comparing test results. Hysteretic responses of all columns are obtained through the test. Compared with the displacement ductility factors, conclusions of seismic performances can be made.

  • Recently, various strengthening methods using carbon fiber sheets (CFS) have been developed for the rehabilitation of structures and applied to the concrete member. However, still research need arises in order to verify the structural capacity of RC member which experienced bond loss between concrete and CFS after strengthening. This is because previous research has focused on the development of design process and evaluation of structural capacity only for retrofit. The appearance of this loss may be initiated at just after retrofit construction. And it will be more serious when the layer number of CFS increases. In order to minimize above mistake in retrofit design using CFS, more exact evaluation process to predict the bond loss of CFS is required. The objective of this research is to study the variation of flexural structural capacity of beam which has experienced bond loss after strengthening using CFS. Experimental and analytical study are performed and evaluation of the previous formula is conducted. Test result showed that the significant strength deterioration was not found until the bond loss of 20%. Overall structural behavior of the beams can be predicted by nonlinear sectional analysis.

  • Due to the cost burden of new construction, the necessity of repair and retrofitting of aged structures is sharply increasing as the domain of repair and retrofitting construction is expanding. Because of the necessity, new technologies for repair and retrofitting are continuously studied in Korea and foreign countries. Steel adhesive method, fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) surface adhesive method, and external prestressing method are used to perform the repair and retrofitting works in Korea. In order to consider a repair method using steel mesh reinforced cement mortar (SMCM), 3-point flexural member test was conducted considering repair area and layer number of SMCM. Five types of specimens including ordinary reinforced concrete (RC) specimen with dimensions of $1400{\times}500{\times}200$ (mm) were cast for testing the deflection measurement, a LVDT was installed at the top center of the specimens. Also, a steel strain gauge and a concrete strain gauge were placed at the center of the specimens. A steel strain gauge was also installed on the shear reinforcement. The 3 point flexural member test results showed that the maximum load of SMCM reinforced specimen was higher than that of basic RC specimen in all of the load-displacement curves. Also, the results showed that, when the whole lower part of the basic RC specimen was reinforced, the maximum load and strain were 1.18 and 1.37 times higher than that of the basic RC specimen, respectively. Each specimen showed a slightly different failure behavior where the difference of the results was caused by the difference in the adhesive level between SMCM and RC. Particularly, in SM-B1 specimen, SMCM spalled off during the experiment. This failure behavior showed that the adhesive performance for RC must be improved in order to utilize SMCM as repair and retrofitting material.

  • In the present work, a mechanical performances under cyclic loading in RC (Reinforced Concrete) beams with normal steel and FRPH (Fiber Reinforced Plastic Hybrid) bar are investigated. For the work, RC beam members with $200{\times}200{\times}2175mm$ of geometry and 24 Mpa of design strength are prepared, and 4-point-bending tests are performed for evaluation of cracking, yielding, and ultimate loads. Through static loading test, 48.9kN and 36.0 kN of yielding loads are measured for normal RC and FRPH beam, respectively. They have almost same ultimate load of 50.0 kN. Typical tension hardening behavior is observed in FRPH beam, which is caused by the behavior of FRPH bar with tension hardening. In cyclic loading conditions, FRPH beam has more smaller crack width and scattered crack pattern, and it shows more elastic recovery than normal RC beam. The energy dissipation ratio in FRPH beam is 0.83, which is greater than 0.62 in normal RC beam and it shows more effective resistance to cyclic loadings.

  • The demand for maintenance in Korea infrastructure facilities constructed since the 1970s has increased significantly compared to the demand for new construction. Moreover, after the Gyeongju and Pohang earthquakes, seismic performance evaluation, repair, and retrofitting projects have been carried out. Therefore, in this study, a specimen was designed following the L-type GFRP Plate Externally Bonded Retrofit method, one among other retrofit methods. The L-type GFRP Plate was bonded to the specimen by epoxy and a washered steel nail. A four-point bending test was performed to confirm the strengthening effect of the Externally Bonded Retrofit method using an L-type GFRP Plate. The strengthening effect of the L-type GFRP plate was proven experimentally, and the behavior of the beam designed following the L-type GFRP Plate Externally Bonded Retrofit method was evaluated according to Korea's "Design Manual & Specification for Strengthening of RC Structures by Advanced Composites System". Furthermore, the effectiveness of the bonding method, a combination of epoxy and washered steel nail, was also checked. The results showed that the design, according to the guidelines mentioned above, predicted the strength of the member well, but the failure mode did not satisfy the design assumption because of unexpected damage to the GFRP plate due to the fixing method, washered steel nail.

  • Polymer composite are increasingly considered as structural components for use in civil engineering, on account of their enhanced strength-to-weight ratios. Unsaturated polyester (UP) resin have been widely used for the matrix of composites such as FRP and polymer composite, due to its excellent adhesive. Polymer nanocomposites are new class of composites derived from the nano scale inorganic particles with dimensions typically in the range of 1 to 1000 nm that are dispersed in the polymer matrix homogeneously. Owing to the high aspect ratio of the fillers, mechanical, thermal, flame, retardant and barrier properties are enhanced without significant loss of clarity, toughness or impact strength. To prepare the MMT (Montmorillonite)-UP exfoliated nanocomposites, UP was mixed with MMT at $60^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours by using pan mixer. XRD (X-ray diffraction) pattern of the composites and TEM (Transmission Electron Micrographs) showed that the interlayer spacing of the modified MMT were exfoliated in polymer matrix. The mechanical properties also supported these findings, since in general, tensile strength, modulus with modified MMT were higher than those of the composites with unmodified MMT. The thermal stability of MMT-UP nanocomposite is better than that of pure UP, and its glass transition temperature is higher than that of pure UP. The polymer concrete made with MMT-UP nanocomposite has better mechanical properties than of pure UP. Therefore, it is suggested that strength and elastic modulus of polymer concrete was found to be positively tensile strength and tensile modulus of the MMT-UP nanocomposites.
