Sweet potatoes (Ipomoea batatas (L.) LAMK.,) have been cultivated in Central and South America for about 2000 years and are now grown mainly in Asia and South America. Sweet potatoes are annual in the temperate region, but are classified as perennial in the tropical region. In 2000, the cultivation area of sweet potatoes decreased to about 16,000 ha in 2000, but the cultivation area increased slightly in recent 20,000 ha in Korea. Sweet potatoes do not show higher maximum dry matter production of 120 ~ 150g per plant, and the leaf area index (LAI), which maximizes dry matter production, is known as 3.0 ~ 4.0. As the leaf area increase, the penetration of light into the canopy becomes poor, and sufficient photosynthesis cannot be achieved in the lower leaves, on the other hand the respiration increase, which results in poor dry matter production. This study was conducted to know the responses of sweet potatoes to intensive shading treatment of 80% shading. This experiment was conducted for about 42 days from September 6, 2016 to October 18, 2016 at Gyeongsang National University Experimental Farm, Jinju, Korea. The plant canopy was shaded with black nylon 80% shade cloth suspended 1.2 m above the ground. The photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, chlorophyll fluorescence, SPAD and NDVI were measured in 3 replicates every 7 days after shading initiation. After the fresh weight was measured, the samples were dried at $80^{\circ}C$ in a dry oven and measured. By the 80% shading treatment, chlorophyll fluorescence of the treated plants was slightly higher than that of the control, the SPAD value was higher by 3.4 and NDVI value was higher by 0.01. However, photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance were lower than those of the control. The stomatal conductance of the control were two times higher than those of the control and the photosynthetic rate of the control was four times higher than that of the control. In control, plant showed a tendency to steadily increase in fresh weight and dry weight. However, in the case of shading treatment, the tendency to increase in the fresh and dry weight of tuberous roots was not clear. The fresh weight of shoot showed a tendency to increase steadily while the difference between treatment and control was not large, but tended to decrease after frost.

In Korea, the average air temperature has been elevated twice faster than the average global warming. And the climate warming is characterized by the smaller rise of air temperature in summer and the greater rise of air temperature in spring and winter. Therefore, the number of frost-free days to determine the cultivation ability of crops has increased by more than 15 days in 10 years according to climate warming. This climate warming trend has extended and is projected to extend not only the sweet potato growing season but also the sweet potato early cultivating area to higher altitude and latitude region. This study was carried out to evaluate the possibility of sweet potato double cropping in the southern island area of Korea by assessing the growth and yield performance of sweet potato cultivated at extremely-early and -late time. We had performed at Yokji Island Yokji Island($E128^{\circ}$ 18' $N34^{\circ}$ 36'), a representative specified complex area of sweet potato cultivation in southern Korea. As the test varieties, the major cultivars of the this region, Shinyulmi and early hypertrophic cultivars, Dahomi were used. The prior cropping were planted with PE film mulching on March 30 and April 10, and harvested after 110 days. So the succeeding cropping were planted without PE film mulching on July 25 and August 5 according to the harvesting time of the prior sweet potato and harvested after 120 days. As a control, it was harvested on September 15, 120 days after planted on May 15. Each experimental plot had an area of 12 square meters consisting of 4 beds, and was planted one at a time at intervals of 25cm. We had investigated growth characteristics - main vine length, node number, branch number, total vine yield, and tuberous root characteristics - tuberous root number, average weight, starch value, and etc. After harvesting, we analyzed the economic effects by examining the postharvest quantity, the input labor, the management cost, and the income. The total yield of marketable products in prior and succeeding cropping was 46~70% higher than that of control. The average unit price of sweet potato was 36% higher than the conventional culture, and the gross income increased by 98%, but the operating cost increased by 83%, and the farm income increased by 103%. There are considerations such as the difficulty of enlargement of cultivation area due to lack of labor in limited space and the need for watering measures due to spring drought. However, if the area of application for sweet potatoes double system is increased by 10%, it can be used as a new cropping system.

Thermal distribution in soils must be considered in engineering designs and constructions, including estimates of frost heave and thaw settlement, infrastructure in cold regions, and geothermal systems. Because thermal conductivity is a key parameter for evaluation of thermal distribution in soils, it must be accurately estimated. The thermal conductivity of fine-grained soils has been widely studied in recent years; however, few studies have reported a reliable method for experimental measurement. The present study presents the results of an experimental investigation of the thermal conductivity of a saturated kaolinite-silica mixture with respect to the variation of dry density. Thermal conductivities were measured in Constant Rate of Strain (CRS) consolidation tests, and the experimental data were analyzed to evaluate the accuracy of the new measurement system. In addition, we present an evaluation method for predicting thermal conductivity in fine-grained soils.
With a view to resolving environmental problems of hazardous cement, this study seeks to identify the unconfined compressive strength and bending strength of the vegetation block designed herein by utilizing high-strength natural soil stabilizer instead of cement. Soil stabilizer is mainly made of mixture of short fiber extracted from natural fiber and lime, etc. Soil stabilizer reinforces the shearing strength of soil to improve block supportive power and durability while preventing flood and frost damages. For the unconfined compressive strength test, test pieces were prepared by mixing soil stabilizer and weathered soil in different ratios of 6 %, 12 % and 18 %. Experiments were carried out according to curing periods of 5th, 7th, 14th and 28th of the day. For bending strength test, blocks were made in the same mixture ratios as for the unconfined compressive test and tested for each stage. Also, to evaluate for the field applicability, proposed optimum water content considering the characteristics of the soil stabilizer. Permeability test result for the vegetation block, satisfied by the KS F 4419 quality standards.

With the advantage of a rapid exothermic reaction property, jet set concrete may be used as a cold weather concrete because it can reach the required strength before being damaged by cold weathers. And it can be hardened more quickly if the field temperature is properly compensated by heating. Because ordinary concrete cannot be hardened well under sub-zero temperatures, anti-freeze agents are typically added to prevent the frost damage and to ensure the proper hardening of concrete. While the addition of a large amount of anti-freeze agent is effective to prevent concrete from freezing and accelerates cement hydration resulting in shortening the setting time and enhancing the initial strength, it induces problems in long-term strength growth. Also, it is not economically feasible because most anti-freeze agents are mainly composed of chlorides. Recent studies reported that magnesia-phosphate composites can be hardened very quickly and hydrated even in low temperatures, which can be used as an alternative of cold weather concrete for cold weathers and very cold places. As a preliminary study, to obtain the material properties, mortar specimens with different mixture proportions of magnesia-phosphate composites were manufactured and series of experiments were conducted varying the curing temperature. From the experimental results, an appropriate mixture design for cold weathers and very cold places is suggested.

In this study, in order to prevent the frost damage of the concrete, the characteristics of the form using heating sheet utilizing the chemical reaction of quicklime and the insulation were evaluated through experiments at low temperature. In the case of form at $-10^{\circ}C$, the form with attached heating sheet showed a temperature history of more than $10^{\circ}C$ higher than that of wood form at the early of concreting due to heat of the quicklime in the heating sheet. In the case of the insulated form, the concrete was kept at a high temperature by preserving the hydration heat. When the heating sheet and the isopink(extruded polystyrene) were attached together on the form, the effect was the same as that of the vacuum insulation. The compressive strength of the form with vacuum insulation and form with isopink, heating sheet as measured about 5 MPa at age 3. The experimental in Mongolia, as with the pervious results, the form with the heating sheet and the insulation showed the highest temperature history over $25^{\circ}C$ for 48 hours. Therefore, it was confirmed that the heating sheet and insulation are attached to the form, which helps the concrete strength development at low temperature by heat generation and the insulation effect.
The development of the Hantan river basin can be divided into three stages. The first stage include the ancient Hantan channel system prior to the Chongokni basalt which yield dates of about 0.6 mya from the K/Ar dating method. During this period the Baekuyri formation was formed. The Baekuyri formation is widely observed under the Chongokni basalt along the current river system. The second stage is the period when stream channels stayed on the top of the basalt plateau. Aggradation and deggradation were continued by meandering and braiding channel systems until major stream channel was formed. The currently remaining deposit on the top of the basalt was formed by lacustrine and fluvial systems in this period. During this period Pleistocene hominid was present on edge of water and flood plain and left Paleolithic material. This period was begun at the time of the final basalt flow dated about 300,000 BP. The third stage is designed for the time when the Hantan river channel was dropped down to a level from which the channel could not influence the top of the basalt any more No more deposit could be formed but erosion by surface water has been continued on the top of the basalt since then. The dropping of the Hantan river channel was probably not very long after the final flow of the basalt. Because of frost action and heavy concentrated precipitation in the basin area along with blocky and clumnar joint structure of the basalt, erosional process of the basalt is believed to have been carried out within a relatively short time. The lowering of the Hantan river channel was probably completed in a cycle of major fluctuation of world cimate. Also, the redclay on the top of the basalt is believed to have been formed during a warm period around 200,000 BP, which accords with the climatic change suggested above fair1y well. The Paleolithic materials in tile deposits fell accordingly into approximately same time period.
The vegetable perilla is proved to be a late-maturing plant that flowers at the early of Oct. regardless of sowing time, so that the sowing time for seed production should be decided under consideration of maturity before beginning of frost. This experiment was carried out to determine the sowing date for seed production at greenhouse on late-maturing perilla cultivar, 'Ipdlkkae 1' in the middle region of Korea. The sowing dates were 8 times from May 6 to July 15 with an intervals of 10 days. As sowing date was delayed, the stem height, no. of nodes, no. of branches, no. of cluster per plant and no. of capsules per cluster were decreased. But as sowing was early, the lodging was occurred because of heavier growing. Days to flowering was linearly decreased about 0.86 day as affected by a day's delayed. But days from flowering to maturing was not significantly affected by sowing date. The grain yield was not significantly different among sowing from May 6 to June 15 and rapidly decreased the sowing after June 25 because of the reductions of no. of cluster and percent of ripened grain. Considering accumulative temperature, lodging, germination rate and grain yield, it is suggested that the sowing for seed production in late-maturing perilla cultivar should be finish before June 15 (transplanted at July 15) at greenhouse in the middle region of Korea.
The thickness of anti-freezing layer has been empirically determined using the frost depth obtained from the freezing index and has not been generally considered as a structural layer in pavement design procedure. In fact, the anti-freezing layer makes a role in structural layer and enables to reduce the total thickness of pavement system. The objective of this study is to develop the statistical regression model for evaluating the structural capacity of anti-freezing layer using Falling Weight Deflectormeter(FWD) test data in asphalt pavements. The FWD testing was conducted at the embankment, cutting, and boundary area of various test sections to estimate the structural capacity of anti-freezing layer in different foundation condition. It is observed from this testing that the center deflections of pavement structure with anti-freezing layer are smaller than those without anti-freezing layer ranging from 0.4 to 82.6%. To determine the variables of statistical model, the correlation study has been conducted between various FWD deflection indexes and the anti-freezing layer thickness. It is found that the ${\Delta}BDI$(%)(${\Delta}Basin$ Damage Index(%)) is highly correlated with anti-freezing layer thickness. The ${\Delta}BDI$(%) model were developed for evaluating structural capacity of anti-freezing layer using linear mixed-effect models.
Until now, the thickness design of anti-freezing layer has been empirically conducted using the frost depth determined from the freezing index. This approach cannot consider the structural properties of anti-freezing layer, which can cause the over-design of pavement structure. This paper presents results of structural evaluation of anti-freezing layer using the Falling Weight Deflectormeter (FWD) deflections. The FWD testing was directly conducted on top of the subbase layer located at the embankment, cutting, and boundary area of each section. It is observed from this testing that the center deflections of pavement structure with anti-freezing layer are smaller than those without anti-freezing layer. The deflection reduction rates are 15~55% in the embankment, 11~64% in the cutting, and 2~38% in the boundary, respectively. It was also found that the use of antifree zing layer enables to reduce the Surface Curvature Index (SCI) values up to 24 percent. Fatigue lives show that pavement structure with antifreezing layer are about two times higher than the those without anti-freezing layer. This fact indicates that the anti-freezing layer should be considered as a structural layer in the asphalt pavement system.
