Components manufactured from composite materials are frequently subjected to superimposed mechanical and thermal loadings during their operating service. Both types of loadings may cause fracture and failure of composite structures. When composite cross-ply laminates of type [$0_m/90_n]_s$ are subjected to uni-axial tensile loading, different types of damage are set-up and developed such as matrix cracking: transverse and longitudinal cracks, delamination between disoriented layers and broken fibers. The development of these modes of damage can be detrimental for the stiffness of the laminates. From the experimental point of view, transverse cracking is known as the first mode of damage. In this regard, the objective of the present paper is to investigate the effect of transverse cracking in cross-ply laminate under thermo-mechanical degradation. A Finite Element (FE) simulation of damage evolution in composite crossply laminates of type [$0_m/90_n]_s$ subjected to uni-axial tensile loading is carried out. The effect of transverse cracking on the cross-ply laminate strength under thermo-mechanical degradation is investigated numerically. The results obtained by prediction of the numerical model developed in this investigation demonstrate the influence of the transverse cracking on the bearing capacity and resistance to damage as well as its effects on the variation of the mechanical properties such as Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio and coefficient of thermal expansion. The results obtained are in good agreement with those predicted by the Shear-lag analytical model as well as with the obtained experimental results available in the literature.
Currently, starting with electric vehicles, the application of ultra-high-strength steel sheets and light metals has expanded to improve mileage by reducing vehicle weight. At a time when internal combustion engine vehicles are rapidly changing to electric vehicles, the application of ultra-high-strength steel is expanding to satisfy both weight reductions and the performance safety of the chassis parts. There is an urgent need to improve the quality of parts without defects. It is particularly difficult to estimate the part formability through the finite element method (FEM) in the burring operation, so product design has been based on the hole expansion ratio (HER) and experience. In this study, design of experiment (DOE), analysis of variance (ANOVA), and regression analysis were combined to optimize the formability by adjusting the process variables affecting the burring formability of ultra-high-strength steel parts. The optimal variables were derived by analyzing the influence of variables and the correlation between the variables through FE analysis. Finally, the optimized process parameters were verified by comparing experiment with simulation. As for the main influence of each process variable, the initial hole diameter of the piercing process and the shape height of the preforming process had the greatest effects on burring formability, while the effect of a lower round of punching in the burring process was the least. Moreover, as the diameter of the initial hole increased, the thickness reduction rate in the burring part decreased, and the final burring height increased as the shape height during preforming increased.
This paper has presented an effective and accurate meso-scale finite element model for simulating the fracture process of concrete under compression-shear loading. In the proposed model, concrete is parted into four important phases: aggregates, cement matrix, interfacial transition zone (ITZ), and the initial defects. Aggregate particles were modelled as randomly distributed polygons with a varying size according to the sieve curve developed by Fuller and Thompson. With regard to initial defects, only voids are considered. Cohesive elements with zero thickness are inserted into the initial mesh of cement matrix and along the interface between aggregate and cement matrix to simulate the cracking process of concrete. The constitutive model provided by ABAQUS is modified based on Wang's experiment and used to describe the failure behaviour of cohesive elements. User defined programs for aggregate delivery, cohesive element insertion and modified facture constitutive model are developed based on Python language, and embedded into the commercial FEM package ABAQUS. The effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed model are firstly identified by comparing the numerical results with the experimental ones, and then it is used to investigate the effect of meso-structure on the macro behavior of concrete. The shear strength of concrete under different pressures is also involved in this study, which could provide a reference for the macroscopic simulation of concrete component under shear force.

We have simulated the process induced warpage for panel level package using finite element method. Silicon chips of $5{\times}5mm^2$ were redistributed on $122.4{\times}93.6mm^2$ size panel and the total number of redistributed chips was 221. The warpage at each process step, for example, (1) EMC molding, (2) attachment of detach core, (3) heating, (4) removal of a carrier, and (5) cooling was simulated using ANSYS and the effects of detach core and carrier materials on the warpage were investigated. The warpage behaved complexly depending on the materials for the detach core and carrier. However, glass carrier showed the lower warpage than FR4 carrier regardless of detach core material, and the minimum warpage was observed when the glass was used for the detach core and carrier at the same time.
To study the working mechanism and size effect of an innovative dovetail UHPC joint originated from the 5th Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge, a large-scale testing subject to negative bending moment was conducted and compared with the previous scaled specimens. The static responses, i.e., the crack pattern, failure mode, ductility and stiffness degradation were analyzed. It was found that the scaled specimens presented similar working stages and working mechanism with the large-scale ones. However, the post-cracking ductility and relative stiffness degradation all decrease with the enlarged length/scale, apart from the relative stiffness after flexural cracking. The slab stiffness at the flexural cracking stage is 90% of the initial stiffness while only 24% of the initial stiffness reserved in the ultimate stage. Finite element model (FEM) was established and compared with the experiments to verify its effectiveness in exploring the working mechanism of the innovative joint. Based on this effective method, a series of FEMs were established to further study the influence of material strength, pre-stressing level and ratio of reinforcement on its deflection-load relationship. It is found that the ratio of reinforcement can significantly improve its load-carrying capacity among the three major-influenced factors.
Perception of the public to structural fires is very important because there are only a number of tall timber buildings constructed in the world. People are hesitating to accept tall timber buildings, so it is essential to ensure the first generation of tall timber buildings to a very high standard, especially fire safety. Right now, there are no specific design standards or regulations for fire design of tall timber buildings in Europe. Even though heavy timber members have better fire resistance than steel components, many conditions still need to be verified before considering the use of timber materials, e.g. fire spread, post-fire collapse, etc. This research numerically explores the structural behaviours of a tall Glulam building when one of its internal Glulam (Glued laminated timber) columns fails after sustaining a full 120-min standard fire and is removed from the established finite element building model created in SAP2000. The numerical results demonstrate that the failure and removal of the selected internal Glulam column may lead to the local failure of the adjacent CLT (Cross laminated timber) floor slabs, but will not lead to large disproportionate damage and collapse of the whole building. Here, the building is assumed to be located in Glasgow, Scotland, UK.

PCS needs to freely switch AC and DC to connect the battery, external AC loads and renewable energy in both directions for energy efficiency. Whenever converting happens, power loss inevitably occurs. Minimization of the power loss to save electricity and convert it for usage is a very critical function in PCS. PCS plays an important role in the ESS(Energy Storage System) but the importance of stabilizing semiconductors on PCB(Printed Circuit Board) should be empathized with a risk of failure such as a fire explosion. In this study, the temperature variation inside PCS was reviewed by cooling fan on top of PCS, and the vibration characteristics of PCS were analyzed during truck transportation for reliability of the product. In most cases, a cooling fan is mounted to control the inner temperature at the upper part of the PCS and components generating the heat placed on the internal aluminum cooling plate to apply the primary cooling and the secondary cooling system with inlet fans for the external air. Results of CFD showed slightly lack of circulating capacity but simulated temperatures were durable for components. The resonance points of PCS were various due to the complexity of components. Although they were less than 40 Hz which mostly occurs breakage, it was analyzed that the vibration displacement in the resonance frequency band was very insufficient. As a result of random-vibration simulation, the lower part was analyzed as the stress-concentrated point but no breakage was shown. The steel sheet could be stable for now, but for long-term domestic transportation, structural coupling may occur due to accumulation of fatigue strength. After the test completed, output voltage of the product had lost so that extra packaging such as bubble wrap should be considered.

Zr-Nb alloy have been widely used as fuel rods in nuclear power plants. However, from the Fukushima nuclear accident, the weakness of the rod was revealed under harsh conditions, and research on the safety of these types of rods was conducted after the disaster. The method of depositing chromium onto the existing Zr-Nb alloy fuel rods is being considered as a means by which to compensate for the weakness of Zr-Nb alloy rods because chromium is strong against oxidation at high temperatures and has high strength. In order to secure these advantages, it is important to maintain the Cr thickness of the rods and properly inspect the rods before and during their use in power generation. Eddy current testing is a typical means of evaluating the thickness of thin metals and detecting surface defects. Depending on the size and shape of the inspected object, various eddy current sensors can be applied. In particular, because pancake sensors can be manufactured in very small sizes, they can be used for inspections even in narrow spaces, such as a nuclear fuel assembly. In this study, an eddy current technique was developed to confirm the feasibility of Cr coating thickness evaluations. After determining the design parameters of the pancake sensor by means of a FEM simulation, a FPCB pancake sensor was manufactured and the optimal frequency was selected by measuring minute changes in the Cr-coating thickness using the developed sensor.
This paper presents the numerical simulation results on the moving type electrodynamic suspension (EDS) simulator and static type EDS simulator using high-Tc superconducting (HTS) levitation magnet. The levitation force of the EDS system is formed by the reaction between the moving magnet and the fixed ground conductor. The possible two ways to simulate the EDS system were simulated in this paper by using finite element method (FEM). The first way was the moving type simulator which consists of the fixed HTS magnet and the moving ground conductor. The second way was the static type simulator which consists of the fixed magnet, the fixed ground conductor and the ac current supply system. To verify the characteristics of high speed EDS system with the moving type simulator heavy, large and fast moving ground conductor is needed. The static type simulator can get the characteristics of the high speed EDS system by applying equivalent ac current to velocity, therefore it does not need large moving part. The static type EDS simulator, which can consist of an HTS magnet, the fixed ground conductor(s), an AC power supply and the measuring devices, also test the effect of the shape of the ground conductor easily. The plate type ground conductor made stronger levitation force than ring type ground conductor. Although the outer diameter 335 mm ring type ground conductor (Ring3) was larger than the outer diameter 235 mm ground conductor (Ring2), the levitation force by Ring2 was stronger than that by Ring3. From the calculation results on this paper, the consideration of the magnetic flux distribution according to the levitation height should be included in the process of the ground conductor design.

This paper presents the effect on the inelastic behavior and structural performance of concrete and filled steel pipe through a numerical method for reliable judgment under various load conditions of the CJS composite structural system. Variable values optimized for the CJS synthetic structural system and the effects of multiple variables used for finite element analysis to present analytical modeling were compared and analyzed with experimental results. The Winfrith concrete model was used as a concrete material model that describes the confinement effect well, and the concrete structure was modeled with solid elements. Through geometric analysis of shell and solid elements, rectangular steel pipe columns and steel elements were modeled as shell elements. In addition, the slip behavior of the joint between the concrete column and the rectangular steel pipe was described using the Surface-to-Surface function. After finite element analysis modeling, simulation was performed for cyclic loading after assuming that the lower part of the foundation was a pin in the same way as in the experiment. The analysis model was verified by comparing the calculated analysis results with the experimental results, focusing on initial stiffness, maximum strength, and energy dissipation capability.
