  • The object of this study is to analize the trilateration adjustment by FEM. FEM is a numerical method for analysis dealing with problems of displacement and variation about the object. Since a plane trilateration net can be likend to a plan structural frame work in stress analysis, the technic of FEM can be used for trilateration adjustment Thus, this study applied FEM and Condition Equation Method to a trilateration adjustment, and investigated precision and characteristics of them.

  • This paper proposes a method that involves a combination of FDM and FEM for analyzing casting process. At present, many numerical analysis methods such as FDM, FEM, and BEM are used for solving engineering problems. For a given problem, a specific method that is suited to the problem is adopted; in general, FDM or FVM is favored for problems related to fluid flow or heat transfer, and FEM is adopted in stress analysis. However, there is an increasing need for using a combined method for complex and coupled phenomena analysis. Hence, we proposed a method in which FDM and FEM are coupled in three-dimensional space, and we applied this method to analyze casting process. In the proposed method, solidification and heat transfer was analyzed by using FDM. The field data such as temperature distribution were converted into a format suitable for FEM analysis that was used for calculating thermal stress distribution. Using the proposed method, we efficiently analyzed the analysis process from the viewpoints of work and time.

  • To analyze the behavior of a soil beam under pore water pressure, the results of analytical solutions and finite element analysis (FEM) were compared quantitatively. In contrast to the results of the analytical solution, the horizontal stress obtained from the FEM did not show a symmetrical distribution. On the other hand, the horizontal stress became closer to symmetrical distribution as the number of elements of the soil beam were increased. A comparison of the horizontal stresses from the analytic solution with those obtained from Gaussian points of FEM showed that the magnitude of the tensile stress from the FEM using 3 elements was 6% of the maximum value of the analytical solution and the compressive stress from the FEM using the same elements was 37% of the maximum value of the analytical solution. The magnitude of the tensile stress from the FEM using 6 elements was 61% of the maximum value of the analytical solution and the magnitude of the compressive stress from the FEM using the elements was 83% of the maximum value of the analytical solution. Vertical stresses, which were obtained from the analytical solution, showed a continuous distribution with the depth of the soil beam, whereas the vertical stresses from the FEM showed a discrete distribution corresponding to each element. The results also showed that the average value of the vertical stresses of each element was close to that of the pore water pressure. A comparison of the vertical displacements computed at the near vertical center line of the soil beam from the FEM with those of the analytical solution showed that the magnitude of the vertical displacement from FEM using 3 elements was 35% of the value of the analytical solution and the magnitude of the vertical displacement from FEM using 6 elements was 57% of the value of the analytical solution.

  • This paper presents a comparative study of reinforced soil slope by using LEM and SSR-FEM. Current analysis methods for reinforced soil wall are based on LEM. SSR-FEM assumes a reduction of soil strength by a factor to reach a critical state prior to failure based on continuum mechanics. In this study the comparisons are concerned with the factor of safety and the potential failure surface in reinforced soil wall. We investigated the stability of the reinforced soil wall with a slope of $60^{\circ}$ by LEM and SSR-FEM. The comparisons indicated good performance of the SSR-FEM on stability analysis of reinforce soil wall.

  • In this study, a non-linear FEM model is presented to predict the static flexural performance of precast bridge decks with ribbed joint and is verified with previous experiment results through comparison. The several theory of material properties were applied to each mechanical properties in FEM model and FEM model's input variables were determined through experiment result and parametric study. The FEM results showed good accuracy in predicting the structural performance of the specimens and FEM model's average error rate was 5%. Also, each specimen's cracking aspect and failure mode can be predicted through FEM's plastic strain distribution. Thus, this FEM model can be used effectively for predicting the ultimate behavior and parametric study to development of design formula for joint.

  • Compared to 3D FEM, 2D FEM can be analyzed by simplifying the model and conditions. However, with respect to coil conditions, in many cases, direction of coils(upward, downward, entrance, exit, etc.) are sequentially configured and set up the FEM analysis conditions. This paper shows simplification of coil conditions and reduction of analysis time by applying the equivalent winding method composed of one FEM coil even if it has multiple slots, and shows consistency of results by applying it to a winding type magnetic gear.

  • 315Fr compressor motor exceeds vibration specifications. To find the reason, first a modal impact test with free-free condition is done. Second a modal test with fixed condition is done. Thereafter the test results are compared with FEM simulation results. Using free-free condition modal impact test, FEM simulation conditions (boundary, mesh..) are modified. The motor has rolling motion around 120Hz. FEM simulation also shows same result. FEM simulation will be used to develop other series compressor motors. Using this, manufacturing test model and doing test will be useless.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of capsulated slurry phase change material (PCM) on the thermal crack in mass concrete by experimental work and FEM analysis. In this study, three conditions of samples were prepared for evaluating the level of hydration heat, i.e., a material condition, a cement paste condition and a concrete condition. Also, a compressive strength test was conducted for FEM inverse analysis. Based on the results of the experiment, exothermic function coefficients of concrete with encapsulated slurry PCM were deducted by the inverse analysis. After that, they applied to FEM analysis of the mass scale concrete structures. From the results of this experiment, $31^{\circ}C$ capsulated slurry PCM had no super cooling phenomenon in the material condition. In the cement condition, hydration heat decreased by 34.61J when PCM of 1g was mixed. In the concrete condition, PCM of 6% was deducted as the best level in hydration heat absorption. In FEM inverse analysis, rate coefficient of reaction gradually decreased when PCM mixing ratio increased. But, temperature-rise coefficient increased when PCM mixing ratio exceeded 6%. For the inversed exothermic function coefficients applying to large scale concrete structures, a thermal cracking index increased by 0.05 when PCM of 1% was mixed.
