  • This study presents a non-prismatic beam element for modeling the elastic and inelastic behavior of steel beams, which have the post-Northridge(cover plate) connections in steel moment frames that are subjected to earthquake ground motions. The elastic stiffness matrix for non-prismatric members with increased beam section (IBS) connection is in the closed-form. The plasticity model is of a discrete type and is composed of a series of nonlinear hinges connected by rigid links. The hardening rules can model the inelastic behavior for monotonic and random cyclic loading, and the effects of local buckling. Moreover the determination of yield surfaces, stiffness parameters, and hardening (or softening) rule parameters for IBS beam element were described. Analytical results of the IBS beam element show good correlation with test data and FEM results.

  • A finite element computer program is developed for the specific analysis of earth retaining structures in urban excavation. Unlike the existing multi -purpose FEM programs, the newly developed program (EM) consists of very simple and easy data processing system for the urban excavation. A non-linear material model(GDHM, Generalized Decoupled Hyperbolic Models is deviloped and implemented in the program EM. The results of large scale model tests for earth retaining structures are used for the vertification of EM along whit GDHM, and the results were satisfactory, but it was found that the program EM needs minor modification for the improvement of its accuracy.

  • The use of equivalent circuit models of piezoelectric energy harvesters is inevitable when power circuitry including rectifying and smoothing circuit elements is connected to them for evaluating DC electrical outputs. This is because it is difficult to incorporate the electro-mechanical coupling resulting from the additional circuitry into the conventional finite element analysis. Motivated by this observation, we propose a method to accurately extract the equivalent circuit parameters by using commercially available FEM software such as ANSYS which provides three-dimensional AC piezoelectric analysis. Then the equivalent circuit can be analyzed by circuit simulators such as $SimPowerSystems^{TM}$ of MATLAB. While the previous works have estimated the circuit parameters by experimental measurements or by analytical solutions developed only for limited geometries and boundary conditions, the proposed method has no such limitation because piezoelectric energy harvesters of any shapes and boundary conditions can be treated in FEM software. For the verification of the proposed method, multi-modal AC electrical power output by using a corresponding equivalent circuit is compared with that by ANSYS. The proposed method is then shown to be very useful in the subsequent evaluation of DC electrical output which is obtained by attaching a bridge diode and a storage capacitor to a piezoelectric energy harvester.

  • As the finite element method has become a considerable and effective design tool in ship structural analysis, modeling of three dimensional finite element mesh is more necessary than before. However, the unique style and complexity of a ship usually make the modeling be hard and costly. Although most pre-processor of FEM software and geometric modeler provides modeling function, the capability is quite limited for complicated structure. In order to perform FEM modeling quickly, it is necessary to extract, rearrange, and formalize data from ship design database for partially automatic mesh generation. In this paper, the process of designing relational data tables from design data is shown as a part of analysis automation with the application of engineering database concept.

  • A bumper beam plays the important role of absorbing the bulk of bumper impact energy, so it is extremely important to determine the bumper beam section during the initial stage of car development process. This paper uses the Intermediate Response Surface Models (IRSM) technique for the bumper beam section optimization. By using this method, the nonlinear impact force-deflection curve is changed to an approximated curve. This can avoid the excessive 3D nonlinear FEM analysis during the optimization process. Then, the accuracy of the IRSM models is examined by comparing their results with those of the 3D nonlinear FEM. Finally it is shown that the proposed approach is effective to design the 2.5mph vehicle bumper section.

  • This paper presents the numerical results of six corrugation models which compute the stress behaviours and stress levels of the membrane structure under the hydrostatic pressure of cryogenic liquids and thermal loadings using a non -linear finite element analysis program. A three-dimensional analysis of various corrugation geometries was performed on the maximum mean normal stress distributions along the upper surface of the membrane sheet. Comparisons of the FEM results for various geometry models of the corrugation are presented, which shows that the corrugated configuration of the ring knot model can be effectively performed for the combined forces such as the hydrostatic pressure and thermal loading in comparison with the Technigaz type corrugation which has small comer and apex curvatures. The FEM results show that the ring knot corrugation can be used for the deepest depth, 180m of the LNG storage tank in comparison with other corrugation models.

  • Consideration on the explosion resistant design of infrastructure has increased in the recent years. The explosion load is caused by gas explosion or bomb blast. In this study an analytical model is developed, whereby the tunnel structure is divided in several elements that are schematized as single degree of freedom mass-spring-dashpot systems on gas explosion. Using this simple model a sensitivity analysis has been carried out on tunnel structure design parameters such as explosive peak pressure, duration of the load, thickness of structure, burial depth. Finite element method was used to investigate the dynamic response and plastic zone of a tunnel under gas explosion. And it was found from the comparison of the analysis results that there are slight differences in the response of the intermediate wall between the single degree of freedom mass-spring-dashpot model and FEM.

  • In this paper, computation results of reducible modeling, stress recovery and energy release rate were compared with the results of VABS, Virtual Crack Closure Technique. The result of stress recovery analysis for 1-D model including the stiffness matrix is compared with stress results of three-dimensional 3-D FEM. Energy release rate of composite beam with longitudinal cracks is calculated and compare verifications of numerical analysis results of 3-D FEM and VABS. The procedure of calculating energy release rate through dimensional reduction and stress recovery is intended to be efficient and be utilized in the life-cycle of high-altitude uav's wing, wind blades and tilt rotor blade.

  • Integrating a 3D solid modeler with a general purpose FEM code, an automatic stress intensity factor analysis system of the 3D crack problems has been developed. A geometry model, i.e. a solid containing one or several 3D cracks is defined. Several distributions of local node density are chosen, and then automatically superposed on one another over the geometry model by using the fuzzy knowledge processing. Nodes are generated and quadratic tetrahedral solid elements are generated by the Delaunay triangulation techniques. Finally, the complete finite element(FE) model generated, and a stress analysis is performed. This paper describes the methodologies to realize such functions, and demonstrates the validity of the present system.

  • Due to architectural requirement, the attention of single layered freeform spatial structure is increasing nowadays. Because the node of single layered structure should resist the bending and axial forces simultaneously, it is necessary to develop a new proper type of node in detail. In this study, a new type of node for single layered freeform spatial structure was proposed. And the structural performance for the node was analytically evaluated using the commercial FEM software(ABACUS). As a result, a node prototype was selected and the proposed node showed good structural behaviors.
