Ship structures are basically an assembly of plate elements and the load-carrying capacity or the ultimate strength is one of the most important criteria for safety assessment and economic design. Also, Structural elements making up ship plated structures do not work separately, resulting in high degree of redundancy and complexity, in contrast to those of steel framed structures. To enable the behavior of such structures to be analyzed, simplifications or idealizations must essentially be made considering the accuracy needed and the degree of complexity of the analysis to be used. On this study, to investigate effect of modeling range, the finite element method are used and their results are compared varying the analysis ranges. The model has been selected from bottom panels of large merchant ship structures. For FEA, three types of structural modeling are adopted in terms of the extent of the analysis. The purpose of the present study is to numerically calculate the characteristics of ultimate strength behavior according to the analysis ranges of stiffened panels subject to uniaxial compressive loads.

The purpose of this paper is to propose a method for evaluation of varying stiffness coefficients of tailored conical shells (TCS). Furthermore, a comparison between buckling loads of these shells under axial load with the different fiber path is performed. A circular truncated conical shell subjected to axial compression is taken into account. Three different theoretical path containing geodesic path, constant curvature path and constant angle path has been considered to describe the angle variation along the cone length, along cone generator of a conical shell are offered. In the TCS with the arbitrary fiber path, the thickness and the ply orientation are assumed to be functions of the shell coordinates and influencing stiffness coefficients of the structure. The stiffness coefficients and the buckling loads of shells are calculated basing on classical shells theory (CST) and using finite-element analysis (FEA) software. The obtained results for TCS with arbitrary fiber path, thickness and ply orientation are derived as functions of shell longitudinal coordinate and influencing stiffness coefficients of structures. Furthermore, the buckling loads based on fiber path and ply orientation at the start of tailored fiber get to be different. The extent of difference for tailored fiber with start angle lower than 20 degrees is not significant. The results in this paper show that using tailored fiber placement could be applied for producing conical shells in order to have greater buckling strengths and lower weight. This work demonstrates the use of fiber path definitions for calculated stiffness coefficients and buckling loads of conical shells.
Existing design codes for steel-concrete composite structures give only general information about the shear connection provided by headed studs in group arrangement. Grouting of the openings in prefabricated concrete slabs, where the grouped headed studs are placed in the deck pockets is alternative to cast-in-place decks to accomplish fast execution of composite structures. This paper considers the possibility to reduce the distance between the studs within the group, bellow the Eurocode limitations. This may lead to increased competitiveness of the prefabricated construction because more studs are placed in the group if negative effectives of smaller distances between studs are limited. The main purpose of this work is to investigate these limits and propose an analytical calculation model for prediction of the shear resistance of grouped stud arrangements in the deck pockets. An advanced FEA model, validated by results of push-out experiments, is used to analyze the shear behavior of the grouped stud with smaller distance between them than recommended by EN 1994-1. Calculation model for shear resistance, which is consistent with the existing Eurocode rules, is proposed based on a newly introduced equivalent diameter of the stud group, $d_G$. The new calculation model is validated by comparison to the results of FE parametric study. The distance between the studs in the longitudinal direction and the number of stud rows and columns in the group are considered as the main variables.
Fillet welding accounts for about 80% of all constructing process of ship and ocean structure. T-joint is one of the typical shapes which are frequently reported to experience the fatigue damage when the marine structure meets the storm loads. The fatigue damage is affected by the magnitude of residual stresses on the weld. Recently, many shipping registers and design guidances have required that the fatigue strength assessment method should be compensated by the effect of the residual stress in case that the random loading or storm loading is applied to the marine vessels. This study suggests the computational procedure to analyze the residual stresses of T-joint specimen that is frequently reported to get damaged by the storm loading. Experiment by XRD as well as the 3-D computational welding model is presented in order to get the profile of residual stress. Throughout the comparison of experimental result with the computational result, the computational model was validated. Thereafter, characteristics of he residual stresses in the joint are discussed.

A Heat Recovery Steam Generator(HRSG) is the main component of a Combined Cycle Power Plant(CCPP). It is a very large structure that is made from relatively thin metal sheets. Therefore, the structural integrity of an HRSG is very important to ensure safe operation during plant lifetime. In particular, thermal deformation and thermal fatigue have been revealed as the main causes of the mechanical degradation of an HRSG. In order to prevent unexpected damage, safety evaluation based on a large-scale analysis is necessary. Therefore, this study aims to improve the safety of HRSG by using Finite Element Analysis(FEA) results derived from large-scale analysis. Furthermore, the modified design is verified by comparing it with the original one. This result will be used as basic data for improving the safety of a vertical-type HRSG.

Recently, to resolve problems regarding legal liability for accidents and disasters, various simulation techniques such as F.E.M. and F.V.M. have been used in the field of forensic engineering. In this study, we performed mechanical structure analysis using ADINA to investigate the cause of bridge collapse accidents. Such accidents occurred owing to modified and missing processes in comparison with the original design while filling with concrete. Modified and missing processes cause buckling of the upper plate and twisting of the main girder. Through this study, we determine the exact cause of bridge collapse by comparing the evaluation of the structure stability of the original design with the evaluation of the structure stability of the modified and missing process using ADINA structure analysis. Hence, this result indicates that buckling prediction through FEA is the most effective method.

The low-altitude earth observation satellite is generally equipped with high performance camera as a main payload which is vulnerable to vibration environment. During the launch process of a satellite, the combustion and jet noise of launch vehicle produce severe acoustic environment and the acoustic loads induced may damage the critical equipments of the satellite including the camera. Therefore to predict and simulate the effect of the acoustic environment which the satellite has to sustain at the lift-off event is very important process to support the load-resistive design and test-qualification of components. Statistical Energy Analysis(SEA) has been widely used to estimate the vibro-acoustic responses of the structures and gives statistical but reliable results in the higher frequency region with less modeling efforts and calculation time than the standard FEA. In this study, SEA technique has been applied to a 3-Dimensional model of a low-altitude earth observation satellite to predict the acceleration responses on the structural components induced by the high level acoustic field in the launch vehicle fairing. In addition, the expected response on each critical component panel was calculated by the classical method in consideration of the mass loading and imposed sound pressure level, and then compared with SEA results.
The ROPS of an agricultural tractor is designed to protect its driver when the tractor overturns. Although the current OECD tests to determine whether the ROPS meets the requirements of the OECD regulation are desirable, they need long time to test. We experimental time and effort by using CAE. We conducted a finite element analysis for the ROPS design of a Dae-Dong tractor cabin in an attempt to reduce the design and manufacturing time. This study shows the interpretative skill using MARC(v.2000) for designing ROPS and difference between the results of testing and FEA. Design process is generally divided into two phases: a concept and a detail design. The concept design uses simple analysis to predict structural behavior, whereas the detail design involves a finite element analysis performed by the results of the concept design. This study focused on the detail design and used Patran(v.2000r2) and MARC(v.2000) of the MSC software corporation. The model consisted of 4812 elements and 4582 nodes. Four tests. specified in the OECD standards, were performed: (1) longitudinal loading test (2) rear crushing test (3) side loading test (4), and front crushing test. Independent analyses were also performed for each test, along with a sequential analysis. When compared, the results of the independent and sequential analyses were found to be similar to the test results.

In crack growth life, uncertainties are caused by variance of geometry, applied loads and material properties. Therefore, the reliability estimation for these uncertainties is required to keep the robustness of calculated life. The stress intensity factors are the most important variable in crack growth life calculation, but its equation is hard to know for complex geometry, therefore they are processed by the finite element analysis which takes long time. In this paper, the response surface is considered to increase efficiency of the reliability analysis for crack growth life of a turbine wheel. The approximation model of the stress intensity factors is obtained by the regression analysis for FEA data and the response surface of crack growth life is generated for selected factors. The reliability analysis is operated by the Monte Carlo Simulation for the response surface. The results indicate that the response surface could reduce computations that need for reliability analysis for the turbine wheel, which is hard to derive stress intensity factor equation, successfully.

In this study, the plastic flow curve of commercially pure titanium sheet (CP Ti) actively used in the plate heat exchanger etc., was evaluated. The plastic flow curve known as hardening curve is a key factor needed in conducting finite element analyses (FEA) for the forming process of a sheet material. A hydraulic bulge test was performed on the CP Ti sheet and the strain in this test was measured using the DIC method and ARAMIS system. The measured true stress-true strain curve from the hydraulic bulge test (HBT) was compared with that from the tensile test. The measured true stress-true strain curve from the hydraulic bulge test showed stable plastic flow curve over the strain range of 0.7 which cannot be obtained in the case of the uniaxial tensile test. The measured true stress-true strain curve from the hydraulic bulge test can be fitted well by the hardening equation known as the Kim-Tuan model.
