  • A modified patched grid scheme has been developed and employed for and axi-symmetric unsteady Euler solver based on Roe's FDS to analyze the unsteady flow fields induced by a train and a tunnel. On this paper, the innovative zonal method, named hybrid dimensional approach, was proposed and applied to the train-tunnel interaction problems. The basic idea of this method is to maximize the efficiency of numerical calculations by minimal assumption of spatial dimensions. The hybrid dimensional approach, embedded in the present modified patched grid method, yielded high numerical accuracy as much as the fully axe-symmetric method. The hybrid dimensional approach is expected to reduce the huge computation time of the train-tunnel interaction problems especially in the cases of solving a long tunnel.

  • A 50 kW polyurethane fire in a compartment of 4 m ${\times}$ 1 m ${\times}$ 1.5m with large openings similar to a subway station was simulated by a large eddy simulation to investigate the fire and smoke control. The NIST FDS, which employed a mixture fraction combustion model and a finite volume method for radiation, was utilized. Distribution of temperature and smoke particles was compared with in the lower and upper corridors for three different smoke control systems, ventilation, purge, and extraction, starting in 5 sec from the ignition of the fire. For the given geometries, the ventilation system showed the best smoke removal rate and lowest temperature distribution in the both corridors. It was confirmed that the purge system is not recommended for a subway station since the smoke removal rate of the purge system was worse than that without a smoke control system.

  • In this study, the experiment conditions for the variation of heat release rate in compartment space were constructed to analyze the effects of fire spread and the operation time of sprinkler in accordance with the heat loss of the sprinkler's heat element. The compartment composed of fire board (width = 0.3 m, height = 0.5 m, length = 3.0 m), are manufactured to measure the temperature distributions in the inner space, the mass loss rate and heat release rate during the experiment of N-heptane pool fire test. Also, the operation time of sprinkler is analyzed with the installation of sprinkler and C-factor using Fire Dynamics Simulator Ver.6 under the experiment conditions. The results show that the operation time of sprinkler, which has RTI $100(m{\cdot}s)^{0.5}$ operating temperature $70^{\circ}C$, is 30 s~60 s for C-factor = 0 and 1, 62 s~92 s for C-factor = 3, and 120 s over for C-factor = 5, respectively.

  • This research was performed with emphasis on fire driven flow behavior and smoke exhaust efficiency which depend on the presence of PSD which are being installed domestically and overseas. For simulation, Jung-ang-ro station of Dae-gu subway station was chosen as model, and fire driven flow analysis was performed by using FDS as flow analysis code. Since many calculation time are required for calculation due to increase in the number of grid as the entire station is modeled, simulation was conducted in parallel processing technique. The fire driven flow analysis was analyzed case by case with composing fire scenario to compare fire driven flow and smoke exhaust efficiency changes depending on the presence of PSD. For fire scale, fire strength of 10MW was studied by referring to NFPA-l30. The calculation results were analyzed with focus on passenger safety by referring to NFPA-130.

  • Textile industry has been recognized as an important pollution source due to its consumption of large volumes of water and chemicals. Textile wastewater contains very diverse chemicals in types and composition, among them the presence of dyes is highly visible and undesirable. In spite of these problems, there has not been a proper control for the wastewater because many dyes are difficult to be degraded or decolorized due to their complex structure and synthetic characteristics. This study has been progressed to evaluate more easily the potential decolorization of advanced treatment processes. It has been surveyed with the Y textile complex wastewater treatment plant, the raw wastewater has appeared very difficult biodegradability by 4.7 of $CODcr/BOD_5$ and 1,158.9 degree of color. In view of CODcr fractions, biodegradable COD portion was 46.4%, colloidal COD and real soluble COD was 45.3% and 31.5% each others. From research on unit processes, the degradable coefficient (k) became from 0.065 to $0.125d^{-1}$ by the processes, the decolorization appeared best efficiency by 30.1% (458.4 degree) in pre-ozone process. On the effluent from the biological process, the filterable CODcr became 129.3 mg/L, the biodegradable portion appeared 64.7% (83.6 mg/L), and the fixed dissolved solid (FDS), non-reactivity (NR), appeared very heavy portion by 80.5% (1,659.0 mg/L).

  • The aim of this paper is to investigate the change of pressure differential and smoke propagation characteristics in the elevator lobby with the resident's evacuation scenarios using fire modelling technique. The results showed absolute pressures in the fire room and elevator lobby can significantly increase to cause fire door to the stairway unclosed once it is open. This is due to constant pressure differentials, the increasing reference pressure of fire lobby and pressure leak from elevator lobby to fire lobby. Smoke exhaust mechanism was needed to prevent the continuous pressure rise in the living room. Over 200 Pa was expected upon closing the door during pressurization, which provide difficulties in opening the door for next refugee. Opening both fire door and entrance door may induce smoke flow from fire room to elevator lobby and stairway.

  • The quantitative risk assessment methods for thermal failure in targets were studied using fire modeling. To this end, Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS), as a representative fire model, was used and the probabilities related to thermal damage to an electrical cable were evaluated according to the change in fire area inside a specific compartment. 'The maximum probability of exceeding the damage thresholds' adopted in a conservative point of view and 'the probability of failure' including the time to damage were compared. The probability of failure suggested in the present study could evaluate the quantitative fire risk more realistically, compared to the maximum probability of exceeding the damage thresholds with the assumption that thermal damage occurred the instant the target reached its minimum failure criteria in terms of the surface temperature and heat flux.

  • The aim of this study is to investigate the gas temperature and velocity during sprinkler activation considering the fire growth scenario based on the thermal response model of the sprinkler. The fire source is assumed to have time square fire growth scenarios with a maximum heat release rate of 3 MW. Eight types of standard and fast-response sprinkler heads with an operating temperature range of 65-105 ℃ and a response time index range of 25-171 m1/2s1/2 were adopted. The temperature difference between the gas stream and the sensing element of the sprinkler head decreased as the fire growth slowed down, and the RTI value decreased. The overall gas temperature and velocity conditions predicted using the FDS model at sprinkler activation were in reasonable agreement with those of standard test conditions of the sprinkler head response. However, the sprinkler head could be activated at lower limits of gas temperature and velocity under the current test conditions for a slowly growing fire scenario.

  • This study evaluates the safety of an asylum through a fire simulation of building Type traditional markets. We derive the building's indoor temperature, use the observed variation in temperature gradient to calculate the temperature of the main structure, and finally compares the time required to attain the limit temperature of the structure its time of escape. To ensure improved security of the asylum, the government has proposed a fire-resistance improvement plan for the major structural parts of buildings are not safe with thickness of 0.01 m and 0.035 m. F.ire-resistance reinforcement for small - and medium-sized vehicles is more than 0.025 m, in thickness; moreover safety can be ensured for medium and large-sized vehicles fire using fire resistant reinforcement of over 0.035 m. Accordingly, in order to ensure the safety of an asylum, fire-resistant reinforcement measures may be considered.
