  • This paper analyses the market shares and the export similarity indexes (ESI) of Korea, Japan and China in ASEAN, and then identifies the determinants of Korea's exports to ASEAN countries using single equation cointegration approaches, such as fully modified OLS (FMOLS), dynamic OLS (DOLS), and canonical cointegration regression (CCR). Various regression results are as follows: As expected, Korea's real exports tend to increase as importing country's GDP grows. The competing third country's currency depreciation affects Korea's exports differently from country to country. Most notably, it doesn't significantly affect Korean exports in Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand. These results suggest that bilateral or third country exchange rates are not that important or decisive factors to determine Korea's exports to ASEAN countries in the long-run while economic growth in ASEAN countries matters most.

  • This paper examines agri-food export competitiveness among 4 countries(Korea, USA, Japan, China) based on Porter's Diamond model approach. Korea agri-food competitiveness index is much less than those of other countries. Korea is the lowest ranked among the 4 countries in terms of three determinants(except 1 factor, related and supporting industries) of Porter's Diamond Model: Factor condition, demand condition, firm strategy, structure and rivalry. Korea is assumed to have weak point in the factor condition, demand condition because of low capital and land as well as insufficient investment on the agri-food sector. on the other hand, it seems to have strong factor in consumer condition(demand condition). This paper suggest the following strategies to reinforced the agri-food export sector in Korea. 1) an incentive system for seed development and capital investment, 2) a cluster strategy between agriculture and related industry.

  • Purpose - Although remittance payment in international trade settlements has played a bigger role in recent years, scant research is being done. This study is to zero in on analyzing determinants of international trade payments focused on remittance by constructing a payment prediction model. Design/methodology - This study categorizes the types of trade payments into advance remittance, post remittance, linked remittance, letter of credit, and mixed payment, and analyzes these after constructing a logit model. For empirical analysis, 147 survey data were collected for export manufacturers in Korea, and binominal logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the type of payment method the exporter chooses for trade transactions. Findings - The likelihood of choosing advance remittance increased as the exporters had non-recovery experiences with payments, and decreased as the market power of importers increased. The possibility of post remittance increased when the export amount was large and the character of the buyer was reliable. In the case of linked remittance, it was highly likely to be selected when payment efficiency was important in trade settlement. In addition, when competition among companies in the global market is intense and market uncertainty is high, the possibility of using a letter of credit decreases. It was also found that the greater the export amount, the greater the possibility of choosing advance remittance, and even if the transaction period was longer, exporters using a letter of credit continued to use it. Originality/value - Despite the high proportion of remittances in international trade settlements, it has been hard to find studies that reflect the practical characteristics of remittances. This study classified the types of remittance into advance remittance, post remittance, and linked remittance, and built a trade payment prediction model by adding a letter of credit and mixed payment. In addition, the originality of this study is recognized in that a logistic model was constructed and meaningful results were derived.

  • This study analyzes various aspects of the successful overseas expansion of SMEs that export consumer goods with their own brands. Through in-depth interviews with CEOs and marketing practitioners of fifteen SMEs that export consumer goods of their own brands, researchers examined the determinants of the decisions to export own-brand products, forms of expansion into foreign markets, firms' distribution networks, firms' technological and marketing capabilities, export barriers, and export support services offered by the government. The results indicate that these companies obtained competitiveness in the design and quality of their products through steady R&D investment, with a focus on niche markets. This study also shows that they established foreign branches, participated in overseas trade fairs, and tapped into foreign markets with Korean home shopping channels and department stores to build distribution channels and to find new buyers. However, the findings of this study reveal that many of those companies export both OEM/OEM products as well as their own-brand products due to the low level of brand awareness in foreign markets. Thus, efforts to improve their brand awareness in the global market are much needed. In addition, this paper demonstrates that the programs and services provided by state-run organizations need improvement in credibility and expertise. This research suggests recommendations for successful export programs, and provides meaningful insights for consumer-goods SMEs establishing foreign market entry strategies with their own brands.

  • The main purpose of this article is to find out the determinants of usage and performance of the uTradeHub system in Korean SMEs. To achieve the purpose of the study, the research model and the hypotheses were developed based on the previous research on uTradeHub and e-Trade. And to test the research hypotheses, empirical survey was conducted to Korean SMEs which were using uTradeHub services. The results of the empirical analyses are as follows. First, among the external factors, intra-industry competition and transaction intensity were significant determinants of uTradeHub usage level. Secondly, among the internal factors, only CEO's support was found to be a significant determinant. Thirdly, among the IT related factors, IT infrastructure and IT training were positively related to uTradeHub usage level. Finally, the uTradeHub usage level was found to have positive effect both on financial and non-financial export performance of the Korean SMEs.

  • Along with the economic globalization and network generalization, this provides a good opportunity to the development of cross-border e-commerce trade. Based on this background, this paper sets ASEAN countries as an example to exploit the determinants of cross-border e-commerce trade including the export and the import, respectively. The panel data from the year of 1998 to 2016 will be employed to estimate the relationship between cross-border e-commerce trade and relevant variables under the dynamic ordinary least squares and the error correction model. The findings of this paper show that there is a long-run relationship between cross-border e-commerce trade and relevant variables. Generally speaking, the GDP(+) and real exchange rate(-export & +import) have an effect on cross-border e-commerce trade. However, the population (+) and the terms of trade (-) only have an effect on cross-border e-commerce import. The empirical evidences show that the GDP and the real exchange rate always affect the development of cross-border e-commerce trade. Therefore, all ASEAN countries should try their best to develop the economic growth and focus on the exchange rate regime so as to meet the need of cross-border e-commerce trade development.

  • This study analyzed factors that should be considered in the process of export diversification strategy formulation and priorities of strategies. We reviewed the extant literature and interviewed six experts. Cross-sectional analysis of a literature review and interview results were used to determine the influencing factors of export. The data for this study were collected from a survey of 68 export experts in Automotive Parts enterprises. Data were analyzed using AHP. As a result of the analysis, the order of importance appeared in the order of internal capacity, correlation buyer effect, entry barriers, technology response, and competition environment. The regions with a high overseas level were product differentiation, centralization, and low cost, whereas those with a low level were in the order of low cost, product differentiation, and concentration. It is meaningful to review the alternatives for adoption of the export diversification strategy and establish a strategy appropriate to the situation. It is necessary to establish a customized strategy considering the characteristics of the global region, and not only internal competence but also mutual relationship with local buyers are important.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify Intra-industry phenomena of Clothing Trade in Korea. For this purpose, changes of Korean clothing trade were analyzed in connection with the theory of intra-industry trade during the 1990's. Formerly, changes of Korean clothing trade were analyzed by the trade orientation index and that of the trade with each Korean clothing trade partner particularly. secondly, tendency and major determinants of two-way trade or intra-industry trade of Korean clothing trade were analyzed. The results of the study were as follows : First, the trade pattern of clothing in Korea was strong export orientation. Since the mid 1990's, however, this tendency has been weakened. Second, tendency of one-way trade is strong generally. but since the mid 1990's, tendency of intra-industry(two-way) trade increased. The intra-industry(two-way) trade tendency with Hong Kong and China is especially strong. Third, from the viewpoint of determinants of intra-industry trade in clothing industry, the determinant is distance between countries in 1994. Also the determinant is trade tendency of the country in 1999.
