Inactivation of N-Type Calcium Current in Rat Sympathetic Neurons

  • Inactivation of N-type calcium current has been reported to be voltage dependent (Jones & Marks, 1989) and $Ca^{2+}$ dependent(Cox & Dunlap, 1994). We examined inactivation by recording currents from the same cell both in [B $a^{2+}$]$_{o}$ and [C $a^{2+}$]$_{o}$ in rat sympathetic neurons. With 11 mM internal EGTA, fractional inactivation[l-(current amplitude at the end of 5 sec pulse/peak current amplitude [1-(current amplitude at the end of 5 sec pulse/peak current amplitude)] was larger in $Ca^{2+}$(0.80$\pm$0.07) than in $Ba^{2+}$(0.69$\pm$0.10)(n=31, p<0.001), but the current traces were nicely fitted with two exponential components both in $Ba^{2+}$ and $Ca^{2+}$.(omitted)ted)ted)

  • Free vibration of symmetric angle-ply layered conical shell frusta of variable thickness is analyzed under shear deformation theory with different boundary conditions by applying collocation with spline approximation. Linear and exponential variation in thickness of layers are assumed in axial direction. Displacements and rotational functions are approximated by Bickley-type splines of order three and obtained a generalized eigenvalue problem. This problem is solved numerically for an eigenfrequency parameter and an associated eigenvector of spline coefficients. The vibration of three and five-layered conical shells, made up of two different type of materials are considered. Parametric studies are made for analysing the frequencies of the shell with respect to the coefficients of thickness variations, length-to-radius ratio, length-to-thickness ratio and ply angles with different combination of the materials. The results are compared with the available data and new results are presented in terms of tables and graphs.

An optimal continuous type investment policy for the surplus in a risk model

  • In this paper, we show that there exists an optimal investment policy for the surplus in a risk model, in which the surplus is continuously invested to other business at a constant rate a > 0, whenever the level of the surplus exceeds a given threshold V > 0. We assign, to the risk model, two costs, the penalty per unit time while the level of the surplus being under V > 0 and the opportunity cost per unit time by keeping a unit amount of the surplus. After calculating the long-run average cost per unit time, we show that there exists an optimal investment rate $a^*$>0 which minimizes the long-run average cost per unit time, when the claim amount follows an exponential distribution.

LONG-TIME BEHAVIOR OF SOLUTIONS TO A NONLOCAL QUASILINEAR PARABOLIC EQUATION

  • In this paper we consider a class of nonlinear nonlocal parabolic equations involving p-Laplacian operator where the nonlocal quantity is present in the diffusion coefficient which depends on $L^p$-norm of the gradient and the nonlinear term is of polynomial type. We first prove the existence and uniqueness of weak solutions by combining the compactness method and the monotonicity method. Then we study the existence of global attractors in various spaces for the continuous semigroup generated by the problem. Finally, we investigate the existence and exponential stability of weak stationary solutions to the problem.

  • In this paper, we study the initial-boundary value problem for viscoelastic wave equations of Kirchhoff type with Balakrishnan-Taylor damping terms in the presence of the infinite memory and external time-varying delay. For a certain class of relaxation functions and certain initial data, we prove that the decay rate of the solution energy is similar to that of relaxation function which is not necessarily of exponential or polynomial type. Also, we show another stability with g satisfying some general growth at infinity.

  • 이 논문에서는 신뢰수명자료의 분석에 많이 사용되는 지수분포, 와이블분포, 로그정규분포에 대해, 현재의 자료가 어느 분포에 가장 적합한가를 알아보기 위한 베이자안 모형 선택방법을 제안한다. 일반적으로, 모수에 대한 사전분포가 부적절 분포인 경우, 베이즈 요인(Bayes factor)은 미지의 상수를 포함한다. 이러한 문제점을 해결하기 위하여 O’Hagan(1995)에 의해 제안된 fractional Bayes factor를 이용하여 자료를 가장 적합시키는 모형을 찾는다. 특히, 제2종 중도절단자료가 주어진 경우. 이 자료를 이용한 베이지안 모형선택에 대한 연구는 거의 이루어진 바가 없다. 실제 자료와 인위적인 자료를 이용하여 로그정규분포, 지수분포, 와이블모형중 어느 모형에 가장 잘 적합한지를 검정하는 예를 보인다.

Optimization of Culture Conditions for Production of Pneumococcal Capsular Polysaccharide Type IV

  • The Pneumococcus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, has an ample polysaccharide (PS) capsule that is highly antigenic and is the main virulence factor of the organism. The capsular PS is the source of PS vaccine. This investigation was undertaken to optimize the culture conditions for the production of capsular PS by type 4 pneumococcus. Among several culture media, brain heart infusion (BHI) and Casitone based medium were found to support luxuriant growth of pneumococcus type 4 at the same level. Therefore in this study, the Casitone based medium was used to study optimization of the culture condition because of BHI broth's high cost and complex nature. The phase of growth which accomodated maximum PS production was exponential phase. Concentrations of glucose greater than 0.8% did not enhance growth or PS production. Substitution of nitrogen sources with other resources or supplementation of various concentrations of metal ion (with the exception of calcium, copper, and magnesium ions) had adverse effects on growth and PS production. On the other hand, low level aeration and supplementation of 3 mg/l concentration of asparagine, phenylalanine, or threonine were beneficial for increased PS production. The synergistic effect of all the favorable conditions observed in pneumococcal growth assays provided a two-fold cumulative increase in capsular PS production.

중도절단 표본의 지수분포성 적합도 검정을 위한 새로운 통계량 (A goodness-of-fit test for exponentiality with censored samples)

  • 본 연구에서는 지수분포성 적합도검정 문제를 다루는데, 모수가 미지인 상황에서 제1종단일 우측중도절단 표본과 제2종우측중도절단 표본인 경우에 각각 적용될 수 있는 새로운 검정통 계량을 제안하였다. 미지의 모수 문제를 해결하기 위해서 K-변환을 고려하였으며 중도절단 균일표본을 완결 균일표본으로 전환시키기 위해서 Rosenblatt 변환을 적용하였다. 전환된 완결 균일표본의 적합도검정을 위한 통계량은 분포함수와 경험분포함수의 편차의 $L_1-norm$ 으로 정의되었다. 검정 통계량의 임계치는 Monte Carlo simulation에 의해 구 했으며, 잘 알려진 Pettit 검정법과 검정력을 비교하였는데, 새로 제안된 검정통계량의 검정 력이 대체로 우수한 것으로 평가되었다.

극소치유량에 대한 적정분포형의 설정과 확률갈수량의 산정 (Probability Funetion of Best Fit to Distribution of Extremal Minimum Flow and Estimation of Probable Drought Flow)

  • In this paper the authors established the best fit distribution function by applying the concept of probabiaity to the annual minimum flow of nine areas along the Nakdong river basin which is one of the largest Korean rivers and calculated the probable minimum flow suitable to those distribution function. Lastly, the authors tried to establish the best method to estimate the probable minimun flow by comparing some frequency analysis methods. The results obtained are as follows (1) It was considered that the extremal distribution type III was the most suitable one in the distributional types as a result of the comparision with Exponential distribution, Log-Normal distribution, Extremal distribution type-III and so on. (2) It was found that the formula of extremal distribution type-II for the estimation of probable minimum flow gave the best result in deciding the probable minimum flow of the Nakdong river basin. Therfore, it is recommended that the probable minimum flow should be estimated by using the extremal distribution type-III method. (3) It could be understood that in the probable minimum flow the average non-excessive probability appeared to be $Po{\fallingdotseq}1-\frac{1}{2T}$ and gave the same values of the probable variable without any difference in the various methods of plotting technique.

The Origin of the Type III Component in the Black Eye Galaxy M64

  • The Black Eye Galaxy M64 is an intriguing spiral galaxy with a Type III disk break. To trace the origin of its Type III component, we present HST/ACS F606W/F814W photometry of resolved stars in the outer disk of M64 (2.5' < R < 6.5'). First, we discover a bright extended globular cluster (GC) M64-GC1 at R ~ 5.5', and find that it is an old metal-poor halo GC ([Fe/H] = -1.5 +/- 0.2). Second, we find that there are two distinct subpopulations of red giant branch stars (RGBs). One is an old metal-rich ([Fe/H] ~ -0.4) disk population, and the other is an old metal-poor halo population similar to the resolved stars in M64-GC1. The radial number density profile of the metal-rich RGB follows an exponential disk law, while that of the metal-poor RGB follows a de Vaucouleurs's low. From these results, we conclude that the origin of the Type III component in M64 is a halo, not a disk or a bulge. We will further discuss the results in regards to the formation and evolution of M64.
