  • Gamut compression algorithms have traditionally been defined functionally and then tested with deductive methods, e.g., psychophysical experiments. Our study offers an alternative, an inductive method, in which observers judge image colors to represent the original images more accurately. We developed a computer-controlled interactive tool that modifies the color appearance of pictorial images displayed on a monitor. In experiments, observers used the tool to alter color pixels according to the region of color space to which they belonged. We created three different gamut compression algorithms based on the observer experimental data. Observer groups evaluated the performance of the newly-developed algorithms, existing gamut compression algorithms, and an image based on the average observers' results from experiments in this study. The study of gamut extension is unlike the study of gamut compression in that it mainly deals with the degree of image pleasantness as judged by observers. The results of the gamut extension experiments in this study not only make available worthwhile data but also suggest a methodology for using the observer experimental tool for future gamut extension research.

  • Map building and position estimation capabilities are practically indispensable for a mobile robot to execute its given tasks in its working environments. An autonomous map building method and a smart localization method is proposed in our previous works. The experimental verifications are carried out in this paper. We applied the proposed algorithms to mobile service robots in large-scale indoor buildings. Experimental results show that our strategy is reliable and feasible in tough conditions like non-polygonal and dynamic environments. The advantages of the algorithms are well-illustrated through real experiments.

  • Experimental modal analysis is an effective tool to investigate the dynamic behavior of machining centers. This paper presents the measurement system and experimental investigation on the modal analysis of machining centers. The modal analysis shows the weak part of the machining center. An important local model of spindle in our experiment, which influences the dynamics of machining process, is proposed in this paper. The results provide the foundation of structure modification for good dynamic behaviors.

  • Comparative study was carried out for an acoustic iterative inverse method to estimate bubble size distributions in water. Conventional bubble sizing methods consider only sound attenuation for sizing. Choi and Yoon [IEEE, 26(1), 125-130 (2001)] reported an acoustic iterative inverse method, which extracts the sound speed component from the measured sound attenuation. It can more accurately estimate the bubble size distributions in water than do the conventional methods. The estimation results of acoustic iterative inverse method were compared with other experimental data. The experimental data show good agreement with the estimation from the acoustic iterative inverse method. This iterative technique can be utilized for bubble sizing in the ocean.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of Kangaroo Care (KC) on physiological marker of preterm infant in neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Methods: The research design was a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest. Data were collected from July 1, 2007 to February 29, 2008. The participants were 26 people of experimental group and 27 people of control group. KC was applied three times per day, for a total ten times of 4 days to the experimental group. Results: There was significant difference between experimental and control groups on the skin temperature on of preterm infants. The skin temperature in the intervention group was significantly higher than in the control group. Conclusion: Kangaroo care can be applied as a supportive nursing intervention to preterm infant at neonatal intensive care unit.

  • This paper describes experimental analysis of UPFC, which is composed of cascaded H-bridge modules and single-phase multi-winding transformers for isolation. The operational characteristic was analyzed through experimental works with a scaled model, and simulation results with PSCAD/EMTDC. The UPFC proposed In this paper can be directly connected to the transmission line without series injection transformers. It has flexibility to expand the operation voltage by increasing the number of H-bridge modules. The analysis results can be utilized to design the actual UPFC system applicable for the transmission system.

  • In this work, linear and mass attenuation coefficients, effective atomic number and electron density, mean free paths, and half value layer and $10^{th}$ value layer values of barium-bismuth-borosilicate glasses were obtained for 662 keV, 1,173 keV, and 1,332 keV gamma ray energies using MCNP-4C code and XCOM program. Then obtained data were compared with available experimental data. The MCNP-4C code and XCOM program results were in good agreement with the experimental data. Barium-bismuth-borosilicate glasses have good gamma ray shielding properties from the shielding point of view.

  • A sequential optimization strategy, based on statistical experimental designs, is employed to enhance the production of alkaline protease by a Bacillus pseudofirmus local isolate. To screen the bioprocess parameters significantly influencing the alkaline protease activity, a 2-level Plackett-Burman design was applied. Among 15 variables tested, the pH, peptone, and incubation time were selected based on their high positive significant effect on the protease activity. A near-optimum medium formulation was then obtained that increased the protease yield by more than 5-fold. Thereafter, the response surface methodology(RSM) was adopted to acquire the best process conditions among the selected variables, where a 3-level Box-Behnken design was utilized to create a polynomial quadratic model correlating the relationship between the three variables and the protease activity. The optimal combination of the major medium constituents for alkaline protease production, evaluated using the nonlinear optimization algorithm of EXCEL-Solver, was as follows: pH of 9.5, 2% peptone, and incubation time of 60 h. The predicted optimum alkaline protease activity was 3,213 U/ml/min, which was 6.4 times the activity with the basal medium.
