  • The cation exchange resins are synthesized from p-phenolsulfonic acid, formalin, and sodium hydroxide catalyser, and the ion exchange properties of them are studied with respect to their reactant ratios. Maximum exchange capacity was 2.06 me/G, much smaller than the theoretical value of 3.42 me/G to be expected for that of the structure: Under the present experimental conditions, much -SO3H radical should have been split away.

  • The performance of a symbol timing estimator for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems is analyzed. The expected value and the variance of the timing metric at the correct symbol timing are derived. The performance degradation of the timing estimator due to multipath fading and fractional timing offset is also presented.

  • This work describes the modeling of cutting process for feedback control based on signal processing in end-milling. Here, cutting force is used to design control model by a variety of schemes which are moving average, ensemble average, peak value, root mean square and analog low-pass filtering. It is expected that each model offers its own peculiar advantage in following cutting force control.

  • Trot(1999) considered how to calculate the expected area of a random triangle in the unit square $[0,1]{\times}[0,1]$. He used the Mathematica software package for the computational part. In this article, we study various aspects of the probability distribution of a triangle randomly chosen inside the circle of radius r. A simulation activity that can be conducted in statistics and probability classrooms is also considered.

  • This paper deals with the development of warehouse layout design algorithm. In the developed model, receiving/outgoing areas, storage areas, picking/distribution areas, value-added operation areas and support areas are considered. For more efficient use of the warehouse floor space, a mezzanine floor is also considered. We develop heuristic algorithms of warehouse layout design for several cases: three types of warehouse and three types of flow. This study is expected to be used as a guideline in warehouse layout design phase.

  • We consider the probability that the total population of a stable Jackson network reaches a given large value. By using the fluid limit of the reversed network, we derive new upper and lower bounds on this probability, which are sharper than those in Glasserman and Kou (1995). In particular, the improved lower bound is useful for analyzing the performance of an importance sampling estimator for the overflow probability in Jackson tandem networks. Bounds on the expected time to overflow are also obtained.

  • A new approach for the measurement of the surface coverages of monomolecular films fabricated by spontaneous adsorption of thiol compounds on gold is described. It is based on the mass change measurement with EQCM for the reductive electrochemical desorption of thiol in aqueous KOH solution. The results were compared with that of charge calculation during electrochemical desorption. The surface coverage value for eicosanethiol agrees with that obtained by charge calculation of electrochemical reduction as well as that expected from a geometrical model of the compact monolayer.

  • The abundances of simple molecules are examined in terms of the time-dependent cloud evolution. The formation and destruction mechanisms of $H_2CO$ are reviewed. The average value of the fractional abundance of $H_2CO$ is derived to be in the range of $10^{-10}\;to\;5{\times}10^{-9}$. This is comparable to the observed values. The expected variations of the molecules formed from or destroyed by CO, CI, and $C^+$ whose abundances depend on the evolutionary state of the cloud are discussed.

  • This paper presents sufficient conditions7 for monotonicity of the saddle point value for receding-horizon H$\infty$ control(RHHC). The resulting monotonicity is used to prove the stability of the closed-loop. Under these sufficient conditions the well-known terminal equality condition is handled as a special case and the condition on the state weighting matrix is weakened so as to include even the zero matrix. The whole procedure is much simpler than the previous results and thus is expected to be easily extended for constrained delayed and/or nonlinear systems with the RHHC.

  • In this paper we propose a method fur the evaluation of the quality of service for VoIP services in NGN. Specifically, let us anatomize the elements of delay of a voice connection in the network in an end-to-end manner and investigate expected value at each point. We extract the delay time in each element in the network such as gateway, network node, and terminal equipment, and estimate an upper bound fur the tolerable delay in each element.
