  • Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of WBC (whole-body cryotherapy)on the MVIC (maximal voluntary isometric contraction)and active ROM (range of motion) recovery of after EIMD (exercise-induced muscle injury). Design: Randomized Controlled Trial. Methods: Thirty subjects who are student in their 20s at a university participated in this study, these subjects were assigned into three groups, a control group (n=10), experiment group I(n=10), and experiment group II (n=10). The subjects in the experimental group II were intervened by WBC (-130℃, 3 minutes) before induced EIMD, the experimental group were intervened by WBC (-130℃, 3 minutes) after induced EIMD, and the control group weren't by any intervened after induced EIMD. Results: First, In the comparison of the MVIC, there were significant variations with the lapse the time in three groups (p<.001) and there was a significant interaction of time and group (p<.001). In the among group comparison, the MVIC of experimental group II was significantly larger than those of other groups (p<.001). Second, In the comparison of the active extension angle, there were significant variations with the lapse the time in three groups (p<.001) and there was a significant interaction of time and group (p<.001). In the among group comparison, the active extension angle of experimental group II was significantly smaller than those of other groups (p<.001). Third, In the comparison of the active flexion angle, there were significant variations with the lapse the time in three groups (p<.01) and there was a significant interaction of time and group (p<.001). In the among group comparison, the active flexion angle of experimental group II was significantly larger than those of other groups (p<.05). Conclusion: The above results revealed that the WBC intervention after an exercise had a positive effect of muscle function after EIMD. Therefore we can consider the WBC as a considerable intervention method to prevent or reduce an exercise injury.

  • In this paper, We investigated the characteristic analysis of flexibility and muscle strength for exercise to verify capacity in rehabilitation exercise of lumbar using lumbar strengthen exercise instrument. We have experiment in 20th years man and woman who are 20 subject with no medical history, we divided subjects into control group with no exercise and training group with lumbar strengthen exercise. We used Hi-Spine(Medicalscience.korea) also, provided exercise 40 minute a day, three days a week and progressed total four weeks. Moreover in our experiment, subjects exercised four postural position as lay down, sit, stand and stretch each ten minute. We measured trunk extension backward, trunk flexion forward, evaluation of based physical fitness and lumbar joint torque. The reults have shown that there more improved all for flexibility, based physical fitness and lumbar joint torque in training group than control group. We indicated that by rotating 3-D axis movement flatform of exercise instrument, muscle spindle in subject have been stimulated and these rotation direction and angle caused muscle tonus and contraction that makes muscle, flexibility and based physical fitness improve more. Our study can be used rehabilitation exercise program to aged people and patient with lumbar injury.

  • A 42-year old male patient was referred to the Department of Oral Medicine, Kyungpook National University Hospital due to the chief complaint of limite mouth opening. Three years ago, the patient was diagnosed as an infarction of both cerefellar hemispheres, acute obstructive hydrocephalus and acute epidural hematoma of frontal lobe at the department of neurosurgery. Both of the infarcted cerevellar hemispheres and the epidural hematoma of frontal lobe were removed with suboccipital and frontal craniectomu. After the brain surgery jaw opening range was decreased progressively and ultimately mouth opening became almost impossible. Spasmodic and rhythmic contractions of the masseter muscles occurred intermittently during daytime as well as sleeping. Food intake was available only through Levin -tube. Actibe jaw opening exercise was prescribed with the aids of tongue blades. A moist hot pack and indomethacin phonophesis were also applied 20 minutes three times a day to decrease discomfort muscle activities. After a month of treatments, the opening range was increased to 5mm at the premolar area and oral food intake was possibel. The L-tube was removed and the patient was discharged.

  • Delayed onset muscle soreness is a sensation of discomfort that occurs 24 h after exercise, and it is associated with the performance of unfamiliar and high force muscle work, such as eccentric contractions. The injury to the muscle has been well described but the mechanism underlying the injury is not fully understood. Although the pathophysiological processes underlying delayed onset muscle soreness are not completely understood, many researchers have investigated various treatments in a attempt to reduce the soreness. Physical therapy is the most importance techniques to reduce delayed onset muscle soreness. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of a cryotherapt on DOMS. Thirty subjects were randomly assigned to experimental group : control, cryotherapy, and placebo group. Elbow flexion range, mechanical pain threshold. and subjective pain were measured 30 min before DOMS was induced and 24, 48, 72 hours after DOMS was induced. The results of this study were as follows: 1. Elbow flexion range showed significant difference each time, especially at 48 and 72 hours 2. Mechanical pain thershold and subjectively pain showed no significant difference between group.

  • The concept of segmental stabilization has been one of the most exciting advancements in the field of physical therapy. Specific deep stabilizing muscle have proven to reverse motor control deficits that occurs after back injury. After an injury, a new motor programming strategy is adopted and there is excessive recruitment of the large , strong , global muscular system works instead of small segmental deep muscle recruitment for stability. Many physical therapists and doctors mistakenly prescribe therapeutic exercise for low back pain to use larger, superficial musculature to strengthen the spine for stability and pain control. But motor control coordination of local segmental muscle is actually the key to stability and pain control, not strengthening of global muscle. A recent focus in physiotherapy management of patients with chronic back pain has been the specific training of muscles surrounding the lumbar spine whose primary role is considered to be the provision of dynamic stability and segmental control to the spine. These are the deep transverse abdominis muscle and lumbar multifudus.

  • Golf has become an increasingly a popular sports for young and older ages. It has benefits of walking exercise and enjoyment of sports . However, golf is considered to be a moderate risk activity for sports injury due to traumatic origin and overuse. Golf injuries primarily affect the dorsolumbar sites , upper extremity(elbow, shoulder, wrist) and lower extremity (knee, hip, ankle). Ajustment of golf swing and conditioning programmes for preventing injuries which include muscular strengthening, flexibility and a short pregame warm up help to reduce the incidence of injury.

  • Rehabilitation of finger patients requires that the patients exercise their hands and fingers for proper functioning to return. A thumb rehabilitation robot, equipped with a two-axis force sensor, can prevent injury to the thumb by monitoring the applied pulling force. In this paper, we describe a link-type thumb rehabilitation robot designed for patients' thumb rehabilitation exercise. Tests of the manufactured link-type thumb rehabilitation robot were performed on normal male patients. Our results show that the robot can be used for flexibility and muscle-strength rehabilitation exercises for a patient's thumb.

  • This article provids background information necessary to design orthopaedic physical therapy programs based on a patient's level of orthopaedic involvement during the acute, subacute, or chronic stage of soft-tissue healing. This approach was used whether the problem involved injury from trauma, insult from overuse, disease, surgical intervention. Soft-tissue lesions and clinical conditions were defined ; the stages of inflammation and repair were described with emphasis on how to manage soft tissues and joints with therapeutic exercise during each stage. A problem list with goals and plan of care was outlined to summarize each clinical situation. A list of clinical problems will be used as the foundation for designing exercise problems for each region of the body.
