Effect of Ramping Rate on the Durability of Proton Exchange Membrane Water Electrolysis During Dynamic Operation Using Triangular Voltage Cycling

  • Proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) is an efficient method for utilizing renewable energy sources such as wind and solar powers to produce green hydrogen. For PEMWE powered by renewable energy sources, its durability is a crucial factor in its performance since irregular and fluctuating characteristics of renewable energy sources, especially for wind power, can deteriorate the stability of PEMWE. Triangular voltage cycle is well able to simulate fluctuating wind power, but its effect on the durability has not been investigated extensively. In this study, the performance degradation of the PEMWE cell operated with the triangular voltage cycling was investigated at different ramping rates. The measured current responses during the cycling gradually decreased for both ramping rates, and I-V curve measurements before and after the cycling confirmed the degradation of the performances of PEMWE. For both measurements, the degradation rate was larger for 300 mV s-1 than 30 mV s-1, and they were determined as 0.36 and 1.26 mV h-1 (at the current density of 2 A cm-2) at the ramping rates of 30 and 300 mV s-1, respectively. The comparison with other studies on triangular voltage cycling also indicate that an increase in the ramping rate accelerates the deterioration of the PEMWE performance. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy results showed that the Ir catalyst was oxidized and did not dissolve during the voltage cycling. This study suggests that the ramping rate of the triangular voltage cycling is an important factor for the evaluation of the durability of PEMWE cells.

Polymer Materials for Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells: Sulfonated Poly(ether sulfone)s for Fuel Cell Membranes

  • The performances of proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), direct formic acid fuel cell (DFAFC) and direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) with sulfonated poly(ether sulfone) membrane are reported. Pt/C was coated on the membrane directly to fabricate a MEA for PEMFC operation. A single cell test was carried out using $H_2/air$ gases as fuel and oxidant. A current density of $730\;mA/cm^2$ at 0.60 V was obtained at $70^{\circ}C$. Pt-Ru (anode) and Pt (cathode) were coated on the membrane for DMFC operations. It produced $83\;mW/cm^2$ of maximum power density. The sulfonated poly(ether sulfone) membrane was also used for DFAFC operation under several different conditions. It showed good cell performances for several different kinds of polymer electrolyte fuel cell applications.

저 물분해 특성을 가진 음이온 교환막의 제조 및 응용 (Preparation and Application of Anion-Exchange Membrane having Low Water-Splitting Capability)

  • 피리디니움 (pyridunium) 그룹을 포함한 음이온교환막의 제조 및 전기화학적 특성 평가를 수행하였다. 실험 결과, 제조된 피리디니움 음이온교환막은 상용막과 대등한 전기저항 ($3.0 {\Xi}cm^2$>, in 0.5 mol $dm^{-3}$ NaCl) 및 높은 이온선택도 ($Cl^-$ 이온수송수 약 0.97)의 우수한 전기화학적 특성을 나타내었다. 또한 피리니디움 그룹을 함유한 음이온교환막에서의 물분해는 상용막 (AM-1, Tokuyama Corp., Japan)에 비해 동일한 전류밀도 하에서 약 100배 내지 1000배 가량 낮게 측정되었는데 이는 4차 아로마틱 피리디니움 그룹의 공명효과 (resonance effect)가 이온교환기의 분자구조적 안정성에 영향을 미쳤기 때문으로 사료되었다. 또한 피리디니움 음이온교환막의 전기투석 특성이 semi-pilot 스케일에서 평가되었다.

비수계 바나듐 레독스 흐름 전지를 위한 상용 멤브레인의 특성분석 (Characterization of Commercial Membranes for Non-aqueous Vanadium Redox Flow Battery)

  • 본 연구에서는 수계 레독스 흐름전지에서 사용하는 멤브레인 특성분석방법을 개선하여 비수계 레독스 흐름 전지를 위한 멤브레인 특성분석방법을 확립하였다. 비수계 레독스 흐름 전지에 적합한 멤브레인 특성을 확인하기 위해 상용 멤브레인의 이온교환능력, 이동수, 이온 전도도, 활물질 투과도, 전지효율 실험 등 특성분석들을 수행하였다. 상용 음이온 교환 멤브레인의 특성분석 실험을 통해 충 방전 효율 및 에너지효율과 이온 선택성의 상관관계를 조사하였다. Neosepta AHA 음이온 교환 멤브레인은 이동수 측정에서 0.81의 값으로 비수계 전해질에서 비교적 낮은 이온 선택성을 보였지만, 충방전 전지효율 평가에서는 92%의 충 방전효율과 86%의 에너지효율을 각각 나타내었다. 또한 이온의 선택성이 없는 다공성 멤브레인은 높은 전류밀도의 비수계 레독스 흐름 전지에 적절함을 알 수 있었다.

  • 본 연구는 고분자 전해질 연료전지 (PEMFC)의 성능에 매우 중요한 영향을 미치는 물의 분포를 실험적으로 측정하였다. 내부에서 일어나는 활발한 화학반응과 물질전달 특성 때문에 PEMFC 내부에서 수분의 분포가 불균일하며 그 분포를 실험적으로 측정하기가 용이하지 않아 그 동안 간접적인 측정이 많이 이루어졌다. 본 연구에서는 초소형 온습도 센서를 연료전지의 채널에 직접 삽입하고 채널을 따라 흐르는 반응가스의 습도를 측정하였다. 수소극과 공기극 중 한곳만 가습하며, 가습하지 않은 곳에서 습도를 측정하여 멤브레인을 통한 물의 이동을 연구하였다. 가습기의 온도가 증가할수록 양극의 물농도 구배가 커져서 확산이 증가하나 높은 전류밀도에서는 전기삼투항력의 영향이 더욱 커졌다.

  • 200hrs operational characteristics of the single cell in phosphoric acid fuel cell was studied. The initial performance of single cells was examined as a function of PTFE content of electrode in the range of 30 to 60 wt.%. The cell with the electrode of 40wt.% PTFE was chosen for the 200hrs operation. The cell voltage decay was found to be about 0.5mV/hr for 200hrs operation. These results of cell performance were discussed as related to the internal resistance and the exchange current density of the cell.

  • The transient response of PEMFC (proton exchange membrane fuel cell) is important criteria in the application of PEM fuel cell to real automotive system. In this work, using a transparent unit PEM fuel cell, the transient response and cathode flooding during load change are investigated. The cell voltage is acquired according to the current density change($0.3Acm^2$ to $0.6A/cm^2$) under various stoichiometry conditions and different flooding intensities, Also the cathode gas channel images are obtained by CCD imaging system simultaneously. The different level of undershoots appeared at the moment of load changes under different cathode stoichiometries and flooding intensities. The correlation of the dynamic behavior with stoichiometry and cathode flooding is induced from the results of these experiments.

전처리가 그래핀을 코팅한 고체고분자 연료전지 분리판의 전기화학적 특성에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Pretreatments on Graphene Coated Bipolar Plate of PEMFC on Electrochemical)

  • Effect of pretreatments on the graphene coated bipolar plate of proton exchange membrane fuel cell(PEMFC) was investigated in simulated environments for PEMFC by using electrochemical measurement techniques. Interfacial contact resistance(ICR) between the graphene coated bipolar plate and the gas diffusion layer(GDL) was measured. The value of ICR decreased with an increase in compaction stress($20N/cm^2{\sim}220N/cm^2$). ICR of graphene coated bipolar plate was higher than that of bare 316L stainless steel. However, Potentiodynamic measurement results showed that the corrosion resistance of graphene coated bipolar plate was higher than that of bare 316L stainless steel. $H_2SO_4$ acid pretreatment was the most effective among various pretreatments. The lowest ICR and the corrosion current density were obtained when using $H_2SO_4$ solution pretreatment.

  • Mobile fuel cell is highlighted in these days because mobile fuel cell can contain more energy than existing batteries. Nowadays mobile devices like cellular phone, PMP(portable multi-media player), notebook, and etc. need more energy, But existing batteries like Li-ion or Ni-MH batteries are not going to satisfy such demands. In this paper, mobile fuel cell is developed. Its size is 50*70*8mm and it is made of aluminium plates. The fuel cell type is PEM and the fuel is pure hydrogen and oxygen.

  • This study presents 0-dimensional model for solid oxide fuel cells(SOFCs). The physics of the cell and the simplifying assumptions are presented, and only hydrogen participates in the electrochemical reaction. The electrical potential is predicted using this model. The Butler-Volmer equation is used to describe the activation polarization and the exchange current density is changed according to the partial pressure of reactants and the temperature. The electrical conductivities of electrodes and an electrolyte are calculated for the ohmic polarization. Material characteristics and temperature affect those factors. Analysis of concentration polarization based on transport of gaseous species through porous electrodes is incorporated in this model. Both binary diffusion and Knudsen diffusion are considered as the diffusion mechanism. For validation, simulation results at this work are compared with our experimental results and numerical results by other researchers.
