  • An example-based dialogue system tries to utilize many pairs which are stored in a dialogue database. The most important part of the example-based dialogue system is to find the most similar utterance to user's input utterance. Modality, which is characterized as conveying the speaker's involvement in the propositional content of a given utterance, is one of the core sentence features. For example, the sentence "I want to go to school." has a modality of hope. In this paper, we have proposed a modality classification system which can predict sentence modality in order to improve the performance of example-based dialogue systems. We also define a modality tag set for a dialogue system, and validate this tag set using a rule-based modality classification system. Experimental results show that our modality tag set and modality classification system improve the performance of an example-based dialogue system.

  • In this paper, we describe self-training super-resolution. Our approach is based on example based algorithms. Example based algorithms need training images, and selection of those changes the result of the algorithm. Consequently it is important to choose training images. We propose self-training based super-resolution algorithm which use an input image itself as a training image. It seems like other example based super-resolution methods, but we consider training phase as the step to collect primitive information of the input image. And some artifacts along the edge are visible in applying example based algorithms. We reduce those artifacts giving weights in consideration of the edge direction. We demonstrate the performance of our approach is reasonable several synthetic images and real images.

  • In this paper, we propose a face hallucination method based on example-learning. The traditional approach based on example-learning requires alignment of face images. In the proposed method, facial images are segmented into patches and the weights are computed to represent input low resolution facial images into weighted sum of low resolution example images. High resolution facial images are hallucinated by combining the weight vectors with the corresponding high resolution patches in the training set. Experimental results show that the proposed method produces more reliable results of face hallucination than the ones by the traditional approach based on example-learning.

  • Example-based chatBot generates a response to user's utterance by searching the most similar utterance in a collection of dialogue examples. Though finding an appropriate example is very important as it is closely related to a response quality, few studies have reported regarding what features should be considered and how to use the features for similar utterance searching. In this paper, we propose a machine learning framework which uses various linguistic features. Experimental results show that simultaneously using both semantic features and lexical features significantly improves the performance, compared to conventional approaches, in terms of 1) the utilization of example database, 2) precision of example matching, and 3) the quality of responses.

  • Current physics-based simulation is an important tool in the fluid animation. However some problems require a new change to current research trends which depend only on the simulation. The ultimate goal of this project is to obtain information of flow example, analyze an example through machine learning and the novel fluid animation reconfigure without physical simulation.

  • Coding of occupational and industrial codes is a major operation in census survey of Korean statistics bureau. The coding process has been done manually. Such manual work is very labor and cost intensive and it usually causes inconsistent results. This paper proposes an automatic coding system based on example-based learning. The system converts natural language input into corresponding numeric codes using code generation system trained by example-based teaming after applying manually built rules. As experimental results performed with training data consisted of 400,000 records and 260 manual rules, the proposed system showed about 76.69% and 99.68% accuracy for occupational code classification and industrial code classification, respectively.

  • In this paper, we present POSSDM (POSTECH Situation-Based Dialogue Manager) for a spoken dialogue system using a new example and situation-based dialogue management technique for effective generation of appropriate system responses. Spoken dialogue system should generate cooperative responses to smoothly control dialogue flow with the users. We introduce a new dialogue management technique incorporating dialogue examples and situation-based rules for EPG (Electronic Program Guide) domain. For the system response inference, we automatically construct and index a dialogue example database from dialogue corpus, and the best dialogue example is retrieved for a proper system response with the query from a dialogue situation including a current user utterance, dialogue act, and discourse history. When dialogue corpus is not enough to cover the domain, we also apply manually constructed situation-based rules mainly for meta-level dialogue management.

  • This study analyzes on the reasoning in the process of justification and mathematical problem solving in our primary mathematics textbooks. In our analyses, we found that the inductive reasoning based on the paradima-tic example whose justification is founnded en a local deductive reasoning is the most important characteristics in our textbooks. We also found that some propositions on the properties of various quadrangles impose a deductive reasoning on primary students, which is very difficult to them. The inductive reasoning based on enumeration is used in a few cases, and analogies based on the similarity between the mathematical structures and the concrete materials are frequntly found. The exposition based en a paradigmatic example, which is the most important characteristics, have a problematic aspect that the level of reasoning is relatively low In Miyazaki's or Semadeni's respects. And some propositions on quadrangles is very difficult in Piagetian respects. As a result of our study, we propose that the level of reasoning in primary mathematics is leveled up by degrees, and the increasing levels are following: empirical justification on a paradigmatic example, construction of conjecture based on the example, examination on the various examples of the conjecture's validity, construction of schema on the generality, basic experiences for the relation of implication.

  • The area of a trapezoid is an important concept to develop mathematical thinking and competency, but many students tend to understand the formula for the area of a trapezoid instrumentally. A clue to solving these problems could be found in Dienes' theory of learning mathematics and Watson and Mason' concept of example spaces. The purpose of this study is to obtain implications for the teaching and learning of the area of the trapezoid. This study analyzed the example spaces constructed by students in learning the area of a trapezoid based on Dienes' theory of learning mathematics. As a result of the analysis, the example spaces for each stage of math learning constructed by the students were a trapezoidal variation example spaces in the play stage, a common representation example spaces in the comparison-representation stage, and a trapezoidal area formula example spaces in the symbolization-formalization stage. The type, generation, extent, and relevance of examples constituting example spaces were analyzed, and the structure of the example spaces was presented as a map. This study also analyzed general examples, special examples, conventional examples of example spaces, and discussed how to utilize examples and example spaces in teaching and learning the area of a trapezoid. Through this study, it was found that it is appropriate to apply Dienes' theory of learning mathematics to learning the are of a trapezoid, and this study can be a model for learning the area of the trapezoid.
