The evanescent wave coupling of a microring resonator is controlled by changing the gap distance between the bus waveguide and the microring waveguide. However, the interdependence of the bus waveguide's width and the coupling is not well understood. In this paper, we investigate the dependence of coupling strength on the bus waveguide's width. The strength of the evanescent wave coupling is analytically calculated using coupled-mode theory (CMT) and numerically calculated by three-dimensional finite-difference-time-domain (FDTD) simulation. The analytic and numerical simulation results show that the phase-matching condition in evanescent wave coupling does not provide maximum coupling strength, because both phase-matching and mode confinement influence the coupling. The analytic and simulation results for the evanescent coupling correspond to the experimental results. The optimized bus-waveguide width that provides maximum coupling strength results in intrinsic quality factors of up to 1.3 × 106. This study provides reliable guidance for the design of microring resonators, depending on various applications.
Closed-form analytical expressions and 3-dimensional normalized charts for the homogeneous sensing and surface sensing structures are derived to provide the conditions for the maximum sensitivity of integrated-optic biosensors based on evanescent-wave and stepindex planar optical waveguides. The analysis is made for transverse electric (TE) polarization mode, in both cases where the measurand is homogeneously distributed in the cover (namely, homogeneous sensing), and where it is an ultrathin film on the waveguide-cover interface (namely, surface sensing).
We studied an integrated-optic biosensor configuration that operates at a wavelength of 0.63 ㎛ based on the evanescent-wave and two horizontal mode power coupling of Si3N4 rib-optical waveguides formed on a Si/SiO2/Si3N4/SiO2 multilayer thin films. The sensor consists of a single-mode input waveguide, followed by a two-mode section which acts as the sensing region, and a Y-branch output for separating the two output waveguides. The coupling between the two propagating modes in the sensing region produces a periodically repeated optical power exchanges along the propagation. A light power was steered from one output channel to the other due to the change in the cladding layer (bio-material) refractive index, which affected the effective refractive index (phase-shift) of two modes through evanescent-wave. Waveguide analyses based on the rib optical waveguide dimensions were performed using various numerical computational software. Sensitivity values of 12~23 and 65~165 au/RIU, respectively for the width and length of 4 ㎛, and 3841.46 and 26250 ㎛ of the two-mode region corresponding to the refractive index range 1.36~1.43 and 1.398~1.41, respectively, were obtained.

The propagation characteristic of an optical waveguide was investigated by measuring with a near-field scanning optical microscope (NSOM) the evanescent field formed at the neighbor of its core-cladding interface. For this purpose, the NSOM system was developed specially as a form of Photon scanning tunneling microscope. The evanescent field distributions of several channel waveguides were measured at the wavelength of 1550 ㎚, and the usefulness of the system was verified by comparing experimental results with simulation results. In particular, the interference phenomena of the guided modes during their propagation along a multimode channel waveguide could be observed directly from the measured evanescent field distribution.

Polymer optical waveguides are fabricated with high-index materials deposited to strengthen exciations of evanescent field whose birefringence is utilized for optical sensing. Optical sensing properties are examined as a function of time, using different types of analyte solutions to extract noise-free signal induced by evanescent field birefringence. It is observed that sensing signal can be free of initial noise that may obscure real signal recognition, when glycerol is used for sensing characterization, due to slow accumulation process following adsorption of analyte material onto the sensing surface of the waveguide.

In this paper, a novel small-diameter cylindrical post capacitor inserted into an evanescent-mode rectangular waveguide (EMRWG) is proposed for easier tuning. In order to feed the EMRWG, the proposed structure uses a single ridge rectangular waveguide with the same width and height as the waveguide at the input and output ends. The inserted post capacitor are made up a circular groove formed in the center of the lower part of the broad wall of the EMRWG, and a concentric cylindrical post inserted into the upper part. First, the equivalent circuit model for the proposed structure is presented. When the EMRWG and the single ridge waveguide are combined, the joint susceptance and the turns ratio of the ideal transformer are calculated by two simulations using HFSS (3d fullwave simulator, Ansoft Co.) respectively. The susceptance and resonance characteristics of the inserted post were analyzed by using the obtained parameters and the characteristics of the EMRWG. A 2-post filter with a center frequency of 4.5 GHz and a bandwidth of 170 MHz was designed using a WR-90 waveguide, and the simulation results by using the HFSS and CST, equivalent circuit model were in good agreement.

A femtosecond-laser inscribed Yb:YAG surface channel waveguide (WG) laser with single-walled carbon nanotubes deposited on the top surface of the WG was passively Q-switched by evanescent field interaction. Q-switched operation of the 14-mm-long compact Yb:YAG WG laser was achieved near 1031 nm with two different pumping schemes (single- and double-pass pumping) with an output coupling transmission of 91%. The Q-switched pulse characteristics depending on the absorbed pump power were investigated for both pumping geometries and analyzed in detail based on theoretical modeling. The best performances (energy/pulse duration) for each configuration were 204.4 nJ/75 ns at a repetition rate of 1.87 MHz, and 201.1 nJ/81 ns at 1.75 MHz for single- and double-pass pumping, respectively.

In this paper, a novel waveguide low pass filter for satellite communication is proposed. The proposed low pass filter is designed to obtain wideband characteristics without the interference of higher order modes, sufficient attenuation in the stop-band and small sized lightweight characteristics by evanescent-mode ridge structure. To improve return loss and rejection loss, rectangular ring is inserting around the ridges in the waveguide. Input and output ports of the low pass filter is designed by using the impedance step structure for the impedance matching of the filter. The proposed waveguide low pass filter is fabricated and then measured as return loss over 19.5 dB, insertion loss less than 1.41 dB at the pass-band of 7.25 ~ 8.4 GHz and rejection loss over 67.2 dB at the stop-band of 12.25 ~ 14.5 GHz.

The existin Berenger's PML(Perfectly Matched Layer) cannot absorb evanescent modes effectively generated in waveguides or periodic array structures. Although some absorbing boundary conditons(ABC) were introduced to absorp the evanescent modes, they did not show sufficient performance or could not be applied easily because of their much difference from Berengers PML. In this paper, NPML(New PML) is introduced to absorb the evanescent modes by splitting the conductivity and permittivity profile of the Berengers PML. The proposed NPML is certified as an ABC having enough performance for evanescent and propagating modes by analyzing the global error and the reflectivity of a waveguide.
