  • Predictions of settlements under preloading for the improvement of soft soil is a very important element of construction management. Due to the non uniformity, difficulty of estimating resonable soil properties, predictions of settlements and settlement velocities at the design stage seldom agree with the actual future settlements. To overcome this problem, the prediction methods based on the settlement observation of initial preloading stage such as hyperbolic method and Asaoka method have been employed frequently. However the estimating method for the reliability of these predictions at the time of prediction has not been suggested. In this study, comparisons of predicted settlements by hyperbolic met hed and observed settlements are explored through case studies. And a stratagem of estimating reliability of settlement predictions by hyperbolic method is suggested as the result of investigation on the relationship between the initial observed time and error of settlement prediction by hyperbolic method.

  • Most of the domestic railroad tracks are ballast track and repetitive maintenance is required in this track. Therefore, it is necessary to optimize maintenance process for maintenance cost reduction and more effective maintenance. For this, it is important to develop a reasonable settlement progressive model of ballast layer. However, the behavior of ballast is different to that of soils, since ballast is composed of large coarse gravel. Thus, in this study, we carried out numerical analysis by using the discrete element method (PFC 2D) for better understanding of ballast settlement and development of reasonable settlement progressive model. And, we evaluated the settlement of ballast according to particles shape, porosity and loading conditions.

  • This paper deals with development of a damage risk assessment system for adjacent buildings to under-passing tunnel face considering 3D-ground movement. The system consists of building and ground information module, monitoring data module, settlement evaluation module, and building damage risk assessment module. The major modules, settlement evaluation module and building damage assessment module, are based on settlement estimation model suggested by Attewell et al (1982) and the building damage assessment method by Mair et al. (1996). After estimating 3D-ground movements due to tunneling with settlement evaluation module, damage assessment far buildings is performed using building damage risk assessment module. The developed system has two major functions; 1) calculation of 3D-settlement with ground loss ($V_{s}$)or maximum settlement ($w_{max}$) and inflection point (i) using various empirical formulae, monitoring data, numerical results, and so on; 2) assessment of damage risk for adjacent buildings of arbitrary section with position change of tunnel face. The field data given by Boscadin and Cording (1989) leer the case of two-storied masonry building near the Metro tunnel in Washington D.C. was simulated to verify the applicability of the developed system.

  • For the design of spread foundation and the stability evaluation, we compared and analyzed it for theoretical, empirical bearing capacity formulas, and various settlement computation formulas, by conducting the plate bearing test at the site of A and B, which consisted of gneiss weathered soil. In addition, we considered the effective method of stability evaluation by carrying out the plate bearing test carried out on the ground consisted of weathering soil of gneiss. Consequently, it was found out that the allowablebearing capacity by the theoretical formula of Terzaghi was too excessive in comparison with the result of the plate bearing test and the Terzaghi-Peck method, which was used widely domestically in designing the spread foundation. It was more effective for a stable design. As a result of the plate bearing test carried out, on the ground consisted of weathering soil. It was found that reviewing the stability by the bearing capacity calculated with load-settlement curve. It is evaluated in a safer side than the point of view of the settlement.

  • Because the thickness and depth of consolidation layer vary at every location, the consolidation settlement and time have to be evaluated spatially. Also, for a rational evaluation of the uncertainty of the spatial distribution of consolidation settlement and time, it is necessary to adopt a probabilistic method. In this study, mean and standard deviation of consolidation settlement and time of whole analysis region are evaluated by using the spatial distribution of consolidation layer which is estimated from ordinary kriging and statistics of soil properties. Using these results and probabilistic method, the area that needs adopting the prefabricated vertical drain as well as raising the ground level for balancing the final design ground level is determined. It is observed that such areas are influenced by the variability of soil properties. The design procedure and method presented in this paper can be used in the decision making process for a geotechnical engineering design.

  • The tilting-train being operated in pre-existing rail road has a different running mechanism compared to currently operated trains. Therefore, it needs to investigate the evaluation of the track performance, the stability of the tilting-train in operating condition, and the stability of the roadbed. In this study, when the tilting train is operated in the rail joint with the allowable velocity limited by the track performance and the stability of the tilting-train, the settlement of the roadbed has been evaluated by using numerical analysis. The loading on the ground surface generated by the operating tilting-train generates the settlement of the roadbed. The settlement induced by the tilting-train loading has been compared to the allowable settlement and the factor of safety defined by the ratio of the allowable settlement to the settlement generated by the applied loading is evaluated.

  • This paper addresses the size effect of shallow foundation settlement in very dense weathered granite soil commonly encountered in bridge foundation. Load-settlement curves measured from the plate load tests of 5 different plate sizes in 2 sites were analyzed. The test results showed that the ground beneath the plate was considered not to reach the failure state and the settlement continuously increased proportionately as load increased. The result implies that settlement would govern the stability or serviceability of foundation on very dense weathered soil. The size effect is expressed as a relationship of subgrade reaction modulus to the size of plate. Compared with the previous relationships, the size effect in this result was more prominent and indicated that settlement prediction using the previous method could possibly underestimate the settlement of foundation in dense weathered granite soil.

  • Compaction is a process of increasing soil density using physical energy. It is intended to improve the strength and stiffness of soil. In embankment, degree of compaction affects the construction time, money, also method of soil improvement. In large scale embankment project, difficulties of embankment should change due to uncertainty of settlement. So it is very important to predict the final settlement and factor of safety induced by embankment. In many construction site, there are primarily design of high embankment using in-situ soil. Therefore numerical analyses are necessary for valid evaluation of the settlement prediction. But due to the construction cost and schedule, there were lacking in properties of soil and also limited number of in-situ test were performed. So we proposed the method that can easily estimate the proper soil parameters and suggest the proper method of numerical analysis. From this, two-dimensional finite-difference numerical analysis was conducted to investigate the settlement and factor of safety induced by embankment with various case of compaction rate and embankment height.

  • The purpose of this paper is to develop a web-based information system for rural settlement environment diagnosis which is useful to apply the village based evaluation for new rural development projects. To achieve this purpose, this study performed : 1) analyzing the business process in the field of rural settlement environment diagnosis, 2) designing the data flow diagram and the database based on settlement environment diagnostic indices(SEDI), and 3) developing the system using APM (Apache, PHP, and MySQL) of web-system development environment. The developed system was applied to the study rural villages for testing of efficient and logical working. Users of the system, such as, researchers, decision makers, and rural residents, can input directly the village data to diagnose through a file format of Excel in MS Office. Futhermore, they can analyze the visual results with graphic and graph types, simultaneously. From the results of this study, it showed that the developed system enables decision-makers not only to assist the planning process of the rural village development project, but also to improve the level of information technology in the research and planning field concerning with rural development.

  • In this study, in order to evaluate the effect of two types of connector systems in reinforced retaining wall, the centrifugal tests for the conventional connector and new settlement connector system were performed. In the centrifugal tests, the aluminum plate for the face was used and the aluminum foil was used as a reinforcement. The granite soil was adopted as a fill. As a result, The settlement reinforced retaining wall reached to the failure at 80g-level. In contrast, the conventional reinforced retaining wall was collapsed at 69g-level. It means that the settlement reinforced retaining wall has the stronger stability than the conventional reinforced retaining wall. In addition, it was shown that the settlement connector system is more effective to release the stress concentration occurred at the face of reinforced retaining wall than the conventional connector system.
