  • The purpose of this study is to know how visual-field obstruction from fire smoke influences a resident's necessary time to reach fire escape and evacuation movement in a high-rise apartment housing. Generally, fire smoke not only gives visual-field obstruction and breath troubles to residents but interrupts their evacuation behavior. If a fire smoke layer is formed in the core department when evacuee enters at the evacuation staircase until, residents will be made to undergo a range of vision obstacle. In order to set a situation like that, participants wore eye bandage which had been made especially before the experiment. Also as a comparative standard, through no.1442 Japanese construction ministry notices about the building evacuation safety verification method, this study calculated smoke layer's dissent time and evacuation time. Then to compare with the former, the participants without an eye bandage joined a experiment once again. This study has understood how fire smoke effects on one's evacuation delay by analyzing residents' evacuation time to reach the staircase and movement route, however, in this study a toxic gas is not considered because it might threaten participants not to breathe.

  • This paper attempted to analyze the correlation between the risk image of the evacuees in the tunnel and the variables that affect the evacuation behavior due to the closed feeling. As to whether there is a difference in the level of recognizing the tunnel risk image according to the distribution of jobs, the null hypothesis was rejected at the significance probability of 0.002, so it can be said that the level of recognition of the tunnel risk image varies depending on the job group. In the distribution difference between gender and tunnel risk image recognition level, the significance probability was 0.012, indicating that the null hypothesis was rejected, indicating that the tunnel risk recognition distribution according to gender was different. As a result of analyzing the distribution difference between the tunnel's closed feeling and the tunnel risk perception level, the significance probability was 0.001, and the null hypothesis was rejected, indicating that there was a difference in the tunnel risk image level.

  • In this study, a simulated situation in which the visions of the evacuees were blocked by the smoke, which is one of the most dangerous factors that cause casualties in case of an emergency, was conducted for the evaluation of the performance of an evacuation guidance system. For this purpose, the behavior and time taken by the experiment subjects in simulated evacuation test were measured and analyzed. When the evacuation guidance sound signals were given by 4 speakers at the same time, most of the subject were disoriented and took generally longer in getting to the pre-designated evac point. And, using only one speaker instead of two showed a better result in terms of the evacuation behavior or and orientation. Also, when there were two or more speakers used for the broadcasting of the guidance message, it turned out that using Hass effect, and placing the speakers closer, could result in higher awareness of the guidance message and maintenance of the orientation, while it also made the subjects took short to get to the evac point.

  • This paper presents a simulation for passenger ship evacuation considering the inclination of a ship. In order to describe a passenger's behavior in an evacuation situation, a passenger is modeled as a rigid body which translates in the horizontal plane and rotates along the vertical axis. The position and rotation angle of a passenger are calculated by solving the dynamic equations of motions at each time step. To calculate inclined angle of damaged ship, static equilibrium equations of damaged ship are derived using "added weight method". Using these equations, physical external forces due to the inclination of a ship act on the body of each passenger. The crowd behavior of the passenger is considered as the flock behavior, a form of collective behavior of a large number of interacting passengers with a common group objective. Passengers can also avoid an obstacle due to penalty forces acting on their body. With the passenger model and forces acting on its body, the test problems in International Maritime Organization, Maritime Safety Committee/Circulation 1238(IMO MSC/Circ.1238) are implemented and the effects of ship's inclination on the evacuation time are confirmed.

  • While the importance of barrier-free and fire evacuation design is highlighted in architectural design education, systemic analysis, and examination on such performances are still challenging due to methodological lacks. The present study investigates the effectiveness of BIM-based human behavior simulation for architecture major students' analytical examinations to promote barrier-free and fire evacuation performances. To achieve such an aim, quasi-experiments were conducted, which compare 50 students' analysis and examination scores according to the use and non-use of the simulation, and the data were collected via participants' survey and interview. As a result, T-Test and MANOVA analyses indicate that, compared with its non-use counterpart, the use of human behavior simulation better facilitates the students' (1) examination of the physical properties and dimensions for the disabled's accessibility and evacuation, (2) understanding of the bodily capacity and handicap of the disabled, (3) examination on the spatial layouts and locations of exits, (4) understanding on evacuees' urgent behaviors, and (5) responsibility as an architect. Based on previous studies, the reasons of statistical results are interpreted as the explicit observation and analytical measures of multiple numbers of virtual-evacuees and direct-experience from body range of the disabled responding to the populated occupants as what they face in authentic reality.

  • Evacuation process has been considered as one of the most important elements to be managed in public facilities. Although the importance is highlighted through numerous literatures, disaster evacuation planning, particularly fire accidents, faces a number of human behavior related limitations for a similar application to different types of facilities/occupants. To overcome the obstacles including complexity in human behaviors, a number of simulation techniques with limited consideration on human behaviors are utilized to predict foreseeable problems in evacuation process. Therefore, this research aims to propose system dynamics models incorporating human behaviors considering different types of occupants under disaster evacuation events. Analysis on emergent human behaviors such as group forming and interactions under urgent situation are conducted based on the main stream theories in social science field. The results suggest the influences of human behavior factors including cooperative intention, information sharing, and mobility change to evacuation behavior. The implications are expected to provide safety consideration at planning/designing phase of buildings and help facility safety managers for evacuation planning with more realistic management approaches.

  • In order to simulate the evacuation simulation of a ship during a sinking, the slope angle change of the ship must be reflected during the simulation. In this study, the passenger evacuation simulation is implemented by continuously applying the heeling angle change during sinking. To reflect crowd behavior, the human density and the congestion algorithm were developed in this research and the walking speed experiment in the special situation occurring in the inclined ship was conducted. Evacuation simulation was carried out by applying the experimental results and the change of the walking speed according to the heeling angle of the ship. In order to verify the evacuation simulation, test items suggested by International Maritime Organization (IMO) and SAFEGUARD Validation Data Set conducted on a large Ro-PAX ferry (SGVDS 1) which performed real evacuation trial in full-scale ships were performed and the results of simulation were analyzed. Based on hypothetical scenario of when a normal evacuation command is delivered to the passengers of MV SEWOL in time, we predicted and analyzed the evacuation process and the number of casualties.

  • A simulation-based approach is proposed to study the protective actions taken by residents during nuclear emergencies using cognitive findings. Human perception-based behaviors are not heavily incorporated in the evacuation study for nuclear emergencies despite their known importance. This study proposes a generic framework of perception-based behavior simulation, in accordance with the ecological concept of affordance theory and a formal representation of affordance-based finite state automata. Based on the generic framework, a simulation model is developed to allow an evacuee to perceive available actions and execute one of them according to Newton's laws of motion. The case of a shadow evacuation under nuclear emergency is utilized to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed framework. The illustrated planning algorithm enables residents to compute not only prior knowledge of the environmental map, but also the perception of dynamic surroundings, using widely observed heuristics. The simulation results show that the temporal and spatial dynamics of the evacuation behaviors can be analyzed based on individual perception of circumstances, while utilizing the findings in cognitive science under unavoidable data restriction of nuclear emergencies. The perception-based analysis of the proposed framework is expected to enhance nuclear safety technology by complementing macroscopic analyses for advanced protective measures.

  • In considering the issue of safely during emergency building evacuations, it is important to be able to make accurate predictions about evacuation conditions and to be able to assess safety levels. Simulation techniques are often used to make predictions regarding evacuation conditions. The two main types of prediction models are crowd flow models and discrete models. We have developed an evacuation simulation system based on the discrete model which attempts to address the implementation problems of existing evacuation models. Our model incorporates characteristics such as evacuee profiles and spatial considerations, and is capable of dynamically predicting the behavior of individual evacuees. The simulation system is primarily designed for buildings in which many people are incapacitated and require helpers in order to evacuate, such as hospitals and facilities fur the elderly. We show the results that the evacuation simulation system was used to perform two trial simulations.
