  • The free vibration of tapered piles embedded in soil is investigated. The pile model is based on the Bernoulli-Euler beam theory and the soil is idealized as a Winkler model for mathematical simplicity. The governing differential equations for the free vibrations of such members are solved numerically. The square tapered piles with one free and the other hinged end with rotational spring are applied in numerical examples. The lowest two natural frequencies are obtained over a range of non-dimensional system parameters: the rotational spring parameter, the embedded ratio, the foundation parameter, the width ratio of the contact area and the section ratio.

  • A computational work has been performed to investigate the aerodynamics of a projectile which is launched from the two-stage light gas gun. A moving coordinate method for a multi-domain technique is employed to simulate unsteady projectile flows with a moving boundary. The effect of a virtual mass is added to the axisymmetric unsteady Euler equation system. The computed results reasonably capture the major flow characteristics which we generated in launching the projectile supersonically, such as the interaction between the shock wave and the blast wave, the interaction between the vortical flow and the barrel shock, and the steady under-expanded jet. The present computational results properly predict the velocity, acceleration, and drag histories of the projectile.

  • A high resolution numerical method aimed at solving gas-liquid two-phase flow is proposed and applied to gas-liquid two-phase shock tube problem. The present method employs a finite-difference 4th-order Runge-Kutta method and Roe's flux difference splitting approximation with the MUSCL TVD scheme. By applying the homogeneous equilibrium cavitation model, the present density-based numerical method permits simple treatment of the whole gas-liquid two-phase flow field, including wave propagation and large density changes. The speed of sound for gas-liquid two-phase media is derived on the basis of thermodynamic relations and compared with that by eigenvalues. By this method, a Riemann problem for Euler equations of one dimensional shock tube was computed. Numerical results such as detailed observations of shock and expansion wave propagations through the gas-liquid two-phase media and some data related to computational efficiency are made. Comparisons of predicted results and exact solutions are provided and discussed.

  • Determining the robot motion using optimal technique has been studied often in recent years however the study of determining the optimal robot dimensions is very rare. In this paper, the authors attempted to find out the least driving torques at each joint as the optimization of link length refered to a 3R robot manipulator. For the given linear path with triangular velocity profile, the inverse kinematic and inverse dynamic problems are examined in order to lead into solution of problem suggested for optimal design of link lengths. Accordingly, optimal link lengths in the case of given linear path is obtained with respect to the parameter of link ratios.

  • Flow analysis in a turbine cascade by Euler or Navier-Stokes equation gives relatively accurate solution, however, those method require large computer memory or computing time. on contrast, the panel method, which is applied to incompressible and inviscid flow, provides fast and reasonal solution but the compressibility correction is required for a high air velocity case. In this paper, the compressibility corrected panel method was applied in order to find velocity distribution on turbine blades. Results showed that the calculated velocity in a turbine cascade by the compressibility corrected panel method gave good agreement with experimental results or the solution by finite volume method for compressible flow.

  • Dynamic stability is critically required to stabilize an airship which is statically unstable. Numerical computations were performed in order to support and confirm the foced oscillation wind tunnel tests. To analyze the low-speed flow filed around the airship, a low-Mach number preconditioned method was applied. Using two computation methods, variations of the dynamic damping coefficients were examined. Numerical results show that it is dynamically stable for three directional moments, but unstable for normal or side force. It is revealed that the damping coefficients are more sensitive to the direction of the angular rate than the angle of attack or the magnitude og angular rate.

  • Separation motion analysis of staging system is conducted using combined analysis programs, which include unsteady aerodynamic analysis codes and dynamic motion analysis tools. In this study, the analysis is for the long-rang missile staging system. The purpose of this study is to verify the safety and reliance of the proposed staging system, and to find out the influence of angle of attack perturbation on staging. A structured parallel overset mesh called Chimera grid is used for the simulation of unsteady supersonic Euler flow solver. In addition, unsteady dynamic simulations are also performed.
