  • Euclid, which is primarily a dark-energy/cosmology mission, may have a microlensing component, consisting of perhaps four dedicated one-month campaigns aimed at the Galactic bulge. We show that such a program would yield excellent auxilliary science, including asteroseismology detections for about 100 000 giant stars, and detection of about 1000 Kuiper Belt Objects (KBOs), down to 2-2.5 mag below the observed break in the KBO luminosity function at I ∼ 26. For the 400 KBOs below the break, Euclid will measure accurate orbits, with fractional period errors ≲ 2.5%.

  • In this paper, Ive investigated algebraic concepts which are contained in Euclid's Elements. In the Books II, V, and VII∼X of Elements, there are concepts of quadratic equation, ratio, irrational numbers, and so on. We also analyzed them for mathematical meaning with modem symbols and terms. From this, we can find the essence of the genesis of algebra, and the implications for students' mathematization through the experience of the situation where mathematics was made at first.

  • In this Paper the change of trends over historical research of mathematics, that has been developed since 1970, is inquired. Most of all it deals with the controversy concerning so-called 'geometrical algebra'. It covers the contents of Euclid' work II. And the relation of the controversy with the change of direction over historical research of mathematics is examined.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient VLSI architecture of Reed-Solomon(RS) decoder. To improve the speed. we develope an architecture featuring parallel and pipelined processing. To implement the parallel and pipelined processing architecture, we analyze the RS decoding algorithm and the honor's algorithm for parallel processing and we also modified the Euclid's algorithm to apply the efficient parallel structure in RS decoder. To show the proposed architecture, the performance of the proposed RS decoder is compared to Shao's and we obtain the 10 % efficiency in area and three times faster in speed when it's compared to Shao's time domain decoder. In addition, we implemented the proposed RS decoder with Altera FPGA Flex10K-50.

  • Euclid is an astronomy and astrophysics space mission of the European Space Agency. The mission aims to understand why the expansion of the Universe is accelerating and what is the nature of the source responsible for this acceleration which physicists refer to as dark energy. This paper provides both an overview of the spacecraft mechanical architecture and a synthesis of the process applied to establish adequate mechanical loads for design and testing. Basic methodologies and procedures, logics and criteria which have been used with the target to meet a compliant, "optimised" design are illustrated. The strategy implemented to limit the risk for overdesign and over-testing without jeopardizing the design margins is also addressed.

  • In this study, mathematical analysis is conducted by focusing to the 'size' of the 'point' and the 'line'. The textbook descriptions of the 'point' and the 'line' in the geometry content area of middle school mathematics 1 by the 2015 revised Korean mathematics curriculum and US geometry textbooks were compared and analyzed between. First, as a result of mathematical analysis of' 'the size of a point and a segment', it was found that the mathematical perspectives could be different according to 1) the size of a point is based on the recognition and exclusion of 'infinitesimal', and 2) the size of the segment is based on the 'measure theory' and 'set theory'. Second, as a result of analyzing textbook descriptions of the 'point' and the 'line', 1) in the geometry content area of middle school mathematics 1 by the 2015 revised Korean mathematics curriculum, after presenting a learning activity that draws a point with 'physical size' or line, it was developed in a way that describes the 'relationship' between points and lines, but 2) most of the US geometry textbooks introduce points and lines as 'undefined terms' and explicitly states that 'points have no size' and 'lines have no thickness'. Since the description of points and lines in the geometry content area of middle school mathematics 1 by the 2015 revised Korean mathematics curriculum may potentially generate mathematical intuitions that do not correspond to the perspective of Euclid geometry, this study suggest that attention is needed in the learning process about points and lines.

  • We study on a Mohr-Mascheroni theorem, which is the followings: If a construction problem is solved by euclidean tools(compass and ruler), then it can be solved using only compass. Though it is known that Mohr-Mascheroni theorem was proved by Mascheroni, but we have not any materials concerned with Mascheroni's work. In order to investigate Mohr-Mascheroni theorem, we analyze Euclid's Elements, and we draw some construction problems, which are essential for proving Mohr-Mascheroni theorem. We solve these problems using only compass. Though we don't solve all construction problems of Euclid's Elements, we can regard that Mohr-Mascheroni theorem is proved.

  • In this paper, the design of decoder for R-S code using discrete finite-field Fourier transform is presented. An important ingredient of this design is a modified Euclid algorithm for computing the error-locator polynomial. The computation of inverse elements is completely avoided in this modification of Euclid algorithm. This decoder is regular and simple, and naturally suitable for VLSI implementation.
