Neutronic simulation of the CEFR experiments with the nodal diffusion code system RAST-F

  • CEFR is a small core-size sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR) using high enrichment fuel with stainless-steel reflectors, which brings a significant challenge to the deterministic methodologies due to the strong spectral effect. The neutronic simulation of the start-up experiments conducted at the CEFR have been performed with a deterministic code system RAST-F, which is based on the two-step approach that couples a multi-group cross-section generation Monte-Carlo (MC) code and a multi-group nodal diffusion solver. The RAST-F results were compared against the measurement data. Moreover, the characteristic of neutron spectrum in the fuel rings, and adjacent reflectors was evaluated using different models for generation of accurate nuclear libraries. The numerical solution of RAST-F system was verified against the full core MC solution MCS at all control rods fully inserted and withdrawn states. A good agreement between RAST-F and MCS solutions was observed with less than 120 pcm discrepancies and 1.2% root-mean-square error in terms of keff and power distribution, respectively. Meanwhile, the RAST-F result agreed well with the experimental values within two-sigma of experimental uncertainty. The good agreement of these results indicating that RAST-F can be used to neutronic steady-state simulations for small core-size SFR, which was challenged to deterministic code system.

  • 본 논문에서는 열손실에 의한 오차를 배제하기 위하여 원판형시편의 전후면에 서의 열손실과 반경방향의 열손실을 고려하고 2층으로 된 적층재료의 열확산방정식을 Green함수를 이용하여 해석하므로서 피복재료들의 열물성치를 정확하게 측정하기 위한 임의의 축대칭 열원의 펄스를 사용하여 열손실 및 펄스시간의 효과에 의한 오차를 최 소화 할 수 있는 방법을 제시 하고자 한다.

Quantification of Methanol Concentration in the Polymer Electrolyte Membrane of Direct Methanol Fuel Cell by Solid-state NMR

  • Direct quantification of methanol in polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) by solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy was studied and the methanol concentrations in PEM produced by crossover and diffusion were compared. The error range of the quantification was not smaller than ${\pm}15%$ and the amount of the methanol crossed over in our direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) was less than the methanol diffused to PEM. The methanol concentration in the PEM of the DMFC operated at different current densities were equivalent.

  • In this paper, a numerical method for a weakly coupled system of two singularly perturbed convection-diffusion second order ordinary differential equations with the mixed type boundary conditions is presented. Parameter-uniform error bounds for the numerical solution and also to numerical derivative are established. Numerical results are provided to illustrate the theoretical results.

Transport Properties of Dumbbell Molecules by Equilibrium Molecular Dynamics Simulations

  • We presents new results for transport properties of dumbbell fluids by equilibrium molecular dynamics (EMD) simulations using Green-Kubo and Einstein formulas. It is evident that the interaction between dumbbell molecules is less attractive than that between spherical molecules which leads to higher diffusion and to lower friction. The calculated viscosity, however, is almost independent on the molecular elongation within statistical error bar, which is contradicted to the Stokes' law. The calculated thermal conductivity increases and then decreases as molecular elongation increases. These results of viscosity and thermal conductivity for dumbbell molecules by EMD simulations are inconsistent with the earlier results of those by non-equilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) simulations. The possible limitation of the Green-Kubo and Einstein formulas with regard to the calculations of viscosity and thermal conductivity for molecular fluids such as the missing rotational degree of freedom is pointed out.

  • In recent years, demands on microelectrode have been greatly enhanced because of its potential applications and mass production of microelectrodes is needed. An electrochemical fabrication is used as an method for the simple and cheap fabrication of multi microelectrodes. In this paper, one dimensional microelectrode array is used for fabricating of multi electrodes. A diffusion layer which is formed near the electrode surface has an effect on the shape error of multi microelectrodes. The optimal distance between electrodes to minimize shape errors of multi electrodes is investigated. Multi microelectrodes which has several tens of and hundreds of micrometer in diameter are fabricated at a time.

Vortex-in-Cell법에 있어 랜덤워크법에 의한 점성효과 (Viscous Effect by Random Walk Method in VIC Method)

  • A method for simulating flow of extremely low Reynolds number in a vortex-in-cell (VIC) was studied. The viscous diffusion was represented by the random walk method. The validity of this method was proven by applying it to the flows passing over a fence placed vertically at an extremely low Reynolds number. The effects of parameters of the VIC method on the random walk method, such as the number of point vortices, the mesh density and the time increment, were investigated by numerical analysis using a one-dimensional diffusion equation. Changes in the relative error of vorticity depending on those parameters were clarified.

Study of Equivalent Retention among Different Polymer-Solvent Systems is Thermal Field-Flow Fractionation

  • An equivalent retention has been experimentally observed in thermal field-flow fractionation (ThFFF) for different polymer-solvent systems. It is shown that iso-retention between two sets of polymer-solvent systems can be obtained by adjusting the temperature difference (ΔT) according to the difference in the ratio of ordinary diffusion coefficient to thermal diffusion coefficient. This method uses a compensation of field strength (ΔT) in ThFFF at a fixed condition of cold wall temperature. It is applied for the calculation of molecular weight of polymers based on a calibration run of different standards obtained at an adjusted AT. The polymer standards used in this study are polystyrene (PS), polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), and polytetrahydrofuran (PTHF). Three carrier solvents, tetrahydrofuran (THF), methylethylketone (MEK) and ethylacetate (ETAc) were employed. Though the accuracy in the calculation of molecular weight is dependent on the difference in the slope of log λ vs. log M which is related to Mark-Houwink constant a, it shows reasonable agreement within about 6% of relative error in molecular weight calculation for the polymer-solvent systems having similar a value.

Numerical Solution of Nonlinear Diffusion in One Dimensional Porous Medium Using Hybrid SOR Method

  • This paper proposes a hybrid successive over-relaxation iterative method for the numerical solution of a nonlinear diffusion in a one-dimensional porous medium. The considered mathematical model is discretized using a computational complexity reduction scheme called half-sweep finite differences. The local truncation error and the analysis of the stability of the scheme are discussed. The proposed iterative method, which uses explicit group technique and modified successive over-relaxation, is formulated systematically. This method improves the efficiency of obtaining the solution in terms of total iterations and program elapsed time. The accuracy of the proposed method, which is measured using the magnitude of absolute errors, is promising. Numerical convergence tests of the proposed method are also provided. Some numerical experiments are delivered using initial-boundary value problems to show the superiority of the proposed method against some existing numerical methods.

에지 강조 정보를 이용한 오차확산 해프토닝 (The Error Diffusion halftoning Method Using Information of Edge Enhancement)

  • 선으로 구성된 회로도나 설계도 같은 특수 목적 영상을 처리할 경우 에지가 강조된 영상을 필요로 한다. 또한 프린터, 팩시밀리, LCD TV 등과 같은 이진 출력 장치에 연속 계조 영상을 표현하기 위한 디지털 해프토닝 방법 중 오차 확산 방법으로 이진 영상을 생성할 경우 에지가 흐려진다. 본 논문은 회로도나 설계도 등의 영상 뿐 아니라 이진 출력 장치 등에 사용되는 이진 영상의 에지를 강조하는 방법을 제안한다. 인간의 눈은 한 화소의 명암값이 아니라 국부 평균을 인식한다는 것을 이용하여 제안 방법은 원화소의 명암값과 $3{\times}3$ 블록의 평균 명암값과의 차이 값에 공간적 위치 값에 따른 가중치를 결합하여 국부 공간 변화량(LAM: local activity measure)을 사용한다. 제안된 시스템은 또한 LAM에 평균 명암도를 곱하여 얻어진 에지 강조 정보량(IEE: information of edge enhancement)을 사용한다. IEE를 양자화기 입력에 더하여 이진 영상의 에지를 강조한다. 컴퓨터 시뮬레이션은 제안 방법이 기존의 방법에 비해 영상의 에지가 강조되어 시각적으로 선명한 영상을 생성한다. 또한 거리에 따른 에지 상관도와 로컬 평균 일치도를 이용하여 제안 방법과 기존 방법의 특성을 분석한다.
