  • Many steam turbine components encounter solid particle erosion damage. It has been reported that particle erosion damage is caused by oxide scale exfoliation from boiler tubes. One of the most effective solutions to combat the erosion damage is the application of erosion resistant coatings on the turbine components. In this study, particle erosion resistance for various hard coatings such as nitride, Cr carbide and boride coatings was evaluated under the simulated erosion conditions of steam turbines. Based on the particle erosion tests, the boride coating was found to be more superior to others.

  • In this study, erosion tests and erosion-corrosion tests of Al5083-H321 aluminum alloy were conducted at various flow rates in seawater. The erosion tests were conducted at a flow rate of 0 to 20 m/s, and erosion-corrosion tests were performed by potentiodynamic polarization method at the same flow rate. Characteristic evaluation after the erosion test was conducted by surface analysis. Characteristic evaluation after the erosion-corrosion test was performed by Tafel extrapolation and surface analysis. The results of the surface analysis after the erosion test showed that surface damage tended to increase as the flow rate increased. In particular, intermetallic particles were separated due to the breakdown of the oxide film at 10 m/s or more. In the erosion-corrosion test, the corrosion current density increased as the flow rate increased. Additionally, the surface analysis showed that surface damage occurred in a vortex shape and the width of the surface damage tended to increase as the flow rate increased. Moreover, damage at 0 m/s, proceeded in a depth direction due to the growth of pitting corrosion, and the damaged area tended to increase due to acceleration of the intermetallic particle loss by the fluid impact.

  • Pipe wall thinning caused by erosion and corrosion can adversely affect the operation of aged nuclear power plants. Some injured workers owing to pipe rupture has been reported and power reduction caused by unexpected pipe damage has been occurred consistently. Therefore, it is important to develop erosion-corrosion damage prediction model and investigate its mechanisms. Especially, liquid droplet impingement erosion(LDIE) is regarded as the main issue of pipe wall thinning management. To investigate LDIE mechanism with corrosion environment, we developed erosion-corrosion damage simulation apparatus and its capability has been verified through the preliminary damage experiment of 6061-Al alloy. The apparatus design has been based on ASTM standard test method, G73-10, that use high-speed rotator and enable to simulate water hammering and droplet impingement. The preliminary test results showed mass loss of 3.2% in conditions of peripheral speed of 110m/s, droplet size of 1mm-diameter, and accumulated time of 3 hours. In this study, the apparatus design revealed feasibility of LDIE damage simulation and provided possibility of accelerated erosion-corrosion damage test by controlling water chemistry.

  • The hull material of a high-speed ship may cause erosion damage from fluid impact. When physical erosion and electrochemical corrosion combine, erosion corrosion damage occurs. The aluminum ship is vulnerable to erosion corrosion because it can be operated at high speed. Thus, in this study, Al5052-O and Al6061-T6 aluminum alloys for the marine environment were selected as experimental materials. The erosion corrosion resistance of Al5052-O and Al6061-T6 aluminum alloys in seawater was investigated by an erosion test and potentiodynamic polarization test at the various flow rate (0 m/s, 5 m/s, 10 m/s, 15 m/s, 20 m/s). Erosion corrosion characteristics were evaluated by surface analysis, 3D analysis, SEM analysis, and the Tafel extrapolation method. The results of surface damage analysis after the erosion test showed that Al6061-T6 presented better erosion resistance than Al5052-O. The results of the potentiodynamic polarization test at the various flow rate, corrosion current density by Tafel extrapolation presented lower values of Al6061-T6 than Al5052-O. Al5052-O showed more surface damage than Al6061-T6 at all flow rates. Consequently, Al6061-T6 presented better erosion corrosion resistance than Al5052-O. The results of this study are valuable data for selecting hull material for an aluminum alloy vessel.

  • The characteristics of cavitation-erosion damage with changes in the amplitude of 5052-O aluminum alloy for ships were investigated in a seawater environment. In the cavitation-erosion experiment, the cavitation environment was created using a vibration-generating device with a piezo-electric effect. The amplitudes of 5 ㎛, 10 ㎛, and 30 ㎛ were created by changing the geometric shape of the cavitation horn. The resistance characteristics of cavitation-erosion damage were evaluated by weight loss and pitting area. The damaged surface was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and 3D optical microscopy. As the amplitude increased, the amount of damage and the area of the damaged surface increased, and the damage was concentrated at the center and edge of the specimen. The pit was created after the initial incubation period with increasing experimental time, and then the pits were merged to grow and propagate into craters, and eventually, the surface was detached and damaged. The cavitation-erosion damage after 30 minutes with amplitude of 10 ㎛ and 30 ㎛ was 1.48 and 2.21 times compared to 5 ㎛, respectively.

  • Cavitation erosion-corrosion implies damage to materials due to the shock pressure or shock wave that results when bubbles form and collapse at a metal surface within a liquid. If the liquids corrosive to the material, a condition typically encountered in industry, the component materials may suffer serious damage by a combination of mechanical and electrochemical attack. To suppress cavitation erosion as well as cavitation erosion-corrosion to hydraulic equipments, innovations such as the improvement in the geometric design of the equipment or the selection of suitably resistant construction materials are necessary. This study was tested by using the piezoelectric vibrator with 20kHz, 24${\mu}$m for cavitation generation. And also, the vibratory cavitation erosion-corrosion tests on commercial mild steel SS41were carried out. We carefully observed the erosion pattern and surface photography. • Surge overflow may cause damage on earthen levees. Levee strengthened on the levee crest and landward-side slope can provide protection against the erosion damage induced by surge overflow. In this paper, surge overflow of a roller compacted concrete RCC strengthened levee was studied in a purely Lagrangian and meshless approach, the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method. After verifying the developed model with analytical solution and comparing the results with full-scale experimental data, the roughness and erosion parameters were calibrated. The water thickness, flow velocity, and erosion depth at crest, landward-side slope and toe were calculated. The characteristics of flow hydraulics and erosion on the RCC strengthened levee are given. The results indicate that the RCC strengthened levee can resist erosion damage for a long period.

  • Various sealing techniques were applied to the anodized 5083 aluminum alloy for marine environment to reduce corrosion and cavitation erosion damage. Electrochemical experiments and cavitation erosion tests were conducted to evaluate the corrosion resistance and cavitation resistance of the anodic oxide film treated with sealing in natural seawater solution. Then, damaged surface morphology was analyzed by scanning electron microscope(SEM) and 3D microscope. As the results of the electrochemical experiments, it was observed that the surface damage of all the experimental conditions in the anodic polarization experiment was locally grown by the combination of crack and corrosion damage. In the Tafel analysis, the corrosion resistance of all sealing treatment conditions was improved compared to the anodizing. On the other hand, cavitation erosion tests showed that the anodizing and all the sealing treatment conditions generated local pit damage by cavitation erosion attack and grew to crater damage in the observation of damaged surface by SEM. Also, the weight loss and the surface damage depth measured with the experiment time presented that most of the sealing treatment conditions showed better cavitation erosion resistance than the anodizing, and they had an incubation period at the beginning of the experiment.
